American Politics Lounge - Donald Trump Is US President-Elect ! by Nobody: 2:13am On Nov 29, 2014 |
The D-day has arrived!! After 19 months (Hillary Clinton was the first to kick-off her campaign in April 2015) of campaigning, debating, and mudslinging all culminate today with the election of either a first female president, or the first non-politician in recent history, as President of the United States this day on Tuesday November 8, 2016. The first state-wide polls close at 7pm ET (1am Wednesday in Nigeria) Updates on the voting process will be posted here, starting from page 118 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Wednesday, October 19, 2016, Democratic nominee Secretary Clinton will square up against GOP nominee Donald Trump at the third and final general election debate of the 2016 election cycle. Time: 9pm ET (2am on Thursday, Nigeria) Venue: University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Moderator: Chris Wallace (Fox News) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Democratic National Convention kicks off on Monday, June 25 and ends on June 28, 2016. The headline speakers on Monday will be former presidential candidate, Sen Bernie Sanders, and First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama. More on this story from page 59 ---------------------------------------------- Multiple sources close to the Donald Trump campaign are hinting that Indiana governor, Mike Pence, has been offered the job of being Donald Trump's running-mate. The official announcement was slated to be held on Friday, July 15, 2016, but has been postponed by Mr Trump due to the recent terrorist truck attack in France which has left 80 people dead. More on this from page 50 ------------------------------------------ Secretary Clinton, on Tuesday June 7, 2016, won the California, South Dakota, New Jersey and New Mexico primaries. Senator Sanders carried the states of North Dakota and Montana. Hillary Clinton now has the required number of delegates (pledged and super) to clinch the Democratic party's presidential nomination. On the Republican side, Donald Trump became the presumptive Republican nominee on May 26, 2016, when some unbound delegates pledged to vote for him at the convention in Cleveland, Ohio. More on this development from page 25 and beyond. 2 Likes |

Former US Under-secretary for Defense (policy), Michele Flournoy, ruled herself out of contention for the vacant post of Defense Secretary. Sources close to her posit that she'd rather hold the position in a Hillary Clinton administration, than having a 2-year stint in a lame duck Obama government. |

I learned that Carly Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, is seriously considering running for President in 2016. She would be the first GOP woman to do so. Cc texanomaly 1 Like |

Does it really matter who runs or win the presidency in the US? The foreign policy will not change and local policies would remain almost the same. Corporations with vested interested will make sure of this. American Presidential elections is overrated. i do enjoy the season thou because it is always fun. That said, I would prefer a Warren presidency since it looks like a female would probably be the next president. Warren over Clinton any day! and i dont think the GOP has any credible female to contest. In fact, they do not have any credible candidate as far as i am concerned so far. but we will see I am usually more interested in my city elections 3 Likes |

CFCman:However, a campaign debt of over $500,000 from her failed bid in the 2010 California Senate race, and the laying off of tens if thousands of HP employees during her time as the CEO, could prove to be her albatross. |

Missy89:Oh yes, the campaign cycle is never short on entertainment, especially on the Republican side. Senator Warren herself has categorically ruled herself out of a 2016 run, on several occasions. So, it's likely gonna be a Hillary coronation as the Democratic nominee. In fact, the real race amongst the Dems in 2016 would be the VP nominee position. As for the Repubs, I see either Jeb Bush or Sen Rand Paul (if KY law is amended to allow candidates run for more than one office), as the most likely nominee. Ms Fiorina may well be really running for the running-mate position. |

Missy89:Lol. They'd be sure of at least 35% of the vote. Condi Rice doesn't have the political personality to run a campaign; she's better if as an appointee. The Repubs could put SC governor, Nikky Haley, on the ticket. The fact that she has won TWO guber elections, in spite of her Indian heritage in a very red state, should alone put her in the Republican presidential conversation. |

Re: American Politics Lounge - Donald Trump Is US President-Elect ! by Nobody: 1:58am On Dec 22, 2014 |
Missy89:White American here, I'm honestly not sure if most Americans specifically want the next president to be white. The Republicans are seen as the party for old, rich, white people and the Democrats are seen as the party for minorities and single women (married white women vote Republican almost as much as white men), but the Republicans like to criticize the Democrats for being hypocrites because most of their politicians are also older, richer, white people. If the Democrats run a white woman in 2016, the Republicans would love to have a black male candidate so that they can say they represent working class Americans and not privileged white women. With the exception of most white women, most of us think black people are more oppressed than white women, so it would really resonate with a lot of people if the Republicans ran someone like Ben Carson (a famous neurosurgeon who came from nothing and is thinking about running as the Republican candidate) because he could criticize Hillary for trying to speak for minorities even though she has a very privileged background, or for acting like women's issues are more important than racial ones. The Republicans want to start appealing more to black and Hispanic voters because white people are becoming a smaller percentage of the population, so it will be hard for them to win an election on the national level in the next few decades. Most Republican voters today were young during the civil rights era, so most of them honestly don't mind if a politician is black/Hispanic/etc, they just want a candidate that protects the interests of the upper-middle class and most of the candidates that do are white because of out unfortunate wealth distribution in this country. But when there is a minority/female Republican candidate they love to support them just to prove how "progressive" they are. In my opinion, the Republicans won't stop being racist until they address the wealth gap between races, because in the past they've mostly ignored it or blamed "black culture" for the unequal distribution of wealth. But I also think the Democrats have been slow to address progressive issues when they're in office, if at all (Obama hasn't exactly stopped the imperialism unfortunately), so a lot of people are giving up on the next race because the parties represent people less and less. |

It's amazing how people fall for the same trick every 4 years! Weren't we all in euphoria some years ago when a certain Barack Obama stepped up and promised change? When we went about with our "Change" and "Yes We Can" stickers on our cars and other personal effects? And what has happened since he came to power? Has foreign policy changed? Has the charade labelled "The War on Terror" made America any safer? Have terror groups that receive training, arms and cash from Washington and his ally, chief terror sponsor, Saudi Arabia, had these flows cut off? Have the corrupt corporate elite had their wings clipped or have they received massive unaccounted bailouts and had their crimes of unprecedented proportions covered up by Holder and other members of Obama's cabinet? Has the militarized police state war machine been abated? Has the economy truly recovered or fraudulent practices such as the fancy named "Quantitative Easing" which is euphemism for actual printing of more dollars been done to prop up the economy ( which is in reality a $17trillion - so far and counting - Ponzi scheme) make it appear healthy? Has a democratic government been overthrown in Ukraine and Nazis installed in their place or not? Is the world more peaceful or are we drawing closer to what may be a regrettable nuclear with Russia because some insane neocons believe in their mind that a nuclear war with Russia is winnable and hence those ABMs in Eastern Europe and senseless NATO expansion? What about false flag operations such as the Maidan massacre and MH17? And CIA torture programs, black sites and God knows what else? And what about China? You don't think they are next in line after Russia? What exactly do you suppose the "Asia Pivot" is all about? Are you actually blinded to or you have purposely refused to see what the self proclaimed " indispensable" and "exceptional" nation, the "bastion of democracy" and "defender of human rights" really is? How then do you explain the "success" in Libya or Iraq or the events unfolding in Syria and Ukraine amongst so many others - past and present? Or the refusal to acknowledge gross violations of human rights during the 50 day Gaza siege or the refusal to condemn unwarranted and reckless land seizures and settlement expansion plans in Israel/West Bank? Do you think any If you put up this post for the spectacle that the U.S. Presidential race presents and wish to be entertained by it, then by all means enjoy but if you did it for the hope or change, then you are searching in the wrong places. 5 Likes 2 Shares

http://vineyardsaker..com/2014/11/hillary-jeb-rand-or-does-it-make.html Hillary, Jeb, Rand or does it make a difference anyway? In my post this morning I failed to realize how many new readers there are on this blog, so I did not repeat things which I had sad many times in the early years of this blog. Your comments and questions made me realize that I needed to clarify my view of the US political system. First - I see the USA as run by a tiny elite which is good at "pretend democracy" but which makes darn sure that the people vote the "correct" way. I consider the primaries, conventions, caucuses, and elections themselves as a mix between a farce, a form of entertainment, a re-legitimization of a system and a secular liturgical act (a form of public self-worship). There is no "democracy" in the US and there probably never was. However, if the regime does not change, the specific clans within the 1% do fight each other and struggle for control of the regime. Second, there are different clans, interest groups, factions who fight *within* the top 1% and they can, and do, make use of the electoral process not as a means of popular expression, but as a way to impose their agenda and interests. I often speak of the "old Anglo guard" (best represented by the Bush clan before Dubya) and the "Neocons", but there are many more interest group (oil, banking, military, drug warriors, big pharma, etc.) who all participate in the internal struggle for power. Thus, there is no real difference between the Republicrats and the Demoblicans, they are all part of the same elite, but there are differences between different political figures who are more, or less, aligned with any specific interest group. Thus Greenwald is correct when he identifies the various groups who would support a Hillary Presidency. This has nothing to do with democracy, the political parties or even her own views and everything to do with which interest groups she sold out to. Even in the course of a single presidency, these groups can struggle with each other and trigger a change in policies. Initially, the election of Obama was a victory of the old Anglo guard and a defeat of the Neocons who then came right back in through the back door and ended up re-taking control. [sidebar: I got two college degrees in the USA between 1986 and 1991 and at the time I was pretty close to several conservative think tanks in Washington DC. I saw with my own eyes how the agents of the Israel lobby, which before that had been aligned with the supposedly "liberal" Democratic party, suddenly realized that the Republicans were a much better host, and how they then began to take control of the previously paleo-conservative think tanks and turned them into Neocon mouthpieces. It was quite amazing. First, they funded them. Then, they influenced the nominations of senior officers and finally, they took them under complete ideological control. The case study of that kind of "subversion and acquisition" of an Anglo paleo-conservative think tank by Zionist interest groups is what happened to the Ethics & Public Policy Center, but there are many many more]. The US elites agree on most goals (world domination, wealth, economic feudalism, etc.) but they can, and do, disagree on methods and priorities. The Israel lobby wanted a war with Iran. The old Anglo guard did not. The latter prevailed. As long as their interests coincide, they act as one. But as soon as there is a real danger or a real threat - they begin to "pull" the agenda over to their own interests. Whether it will (Hillary) Clinton vs (Jeb) Bush again or not, whoever wins the presidency will have to continue to preside over the gradual erosion of the US imperial power and thus will have to decide whether the use of force (or threat of use, which is, in many ways, almost the same thing) against Russia can, if not reverse, then at least slow down that process. At this point whether the US goes to war or not will depend on both the of correlation of the various interest groups inside the 1%ers and on the collective personality (President + advisors) who will be sitting in the White House. This is the moment when having a generally mentally sane Jeb Bush (and his staff) might be better than a clearly rabid Hillary (and her staff). This has nothing to do with being "better" or "liberal or conservative" because on all these levels there are not meaningful differences between the Left/Liberal/Democratic side and the Right/Conservative/Republican side: they are all equally for sale, they all represent a pseudo-democracy of "one dollar one vote", they all are a government "by the billionaires for the billionaires" and none of them gives a damn the 99% of the planet or even the 99% of the American people. As for Rand Paul, his function is the same as of Dennis Kucinich: get more votes into their respective parties. Besides, unlike Kucinich, and even very much unlike his father Ron, Rand Paul is a puppet in the hands of the Israel Lobby. Right now, there is nobody out there representing the interests of the vast majority of the people of the USA. No "American Putin". This is both scary and very sad. Anyway, these are my 2cts on this depressing issue. Cheers, The Saker 3 Likes 2 Shares |

@NairaMinted: You're so right. In fact, I'm beginning to think the whole electoral process is a cruel joke on Americans. The 'choice' we are to put up with ain't no different from the Chinese 'elections' where only candidates of the Communist Party are eligible to stand for elections. But as EnlightenedSoul said, the election season provides a great deal of entertainment. 2 Likes |

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker There’s something to be said for tabbing a vice president who’d have a legitimate shot to win a presidential election of their own someday. On drive, charisma and content of character alone, Cory Booker certainly fits the bill, to say nothing of his youth — even if he served two terms as vice president, he’d be just 55 years old in 2024. His success story as underdog candidate to mayor of Newark to United States senator is well known to nationally-aware Democrats, and his selection would inject some undeniable enthusiasm into the campaign. After all, this is somebody who’s just as at ease unapologetically championing progressive politics as he is making shoddy Seinfeld parodies with Republican Governor Chris Christie. California Attorney-General: Kamala Harris The daughter of a Jamaican-origin father – Stanford University economics professor Donald Harris, and Indian-origin mother – Dr. Shyamala Gopalan Harris, a breast cancer specialist who emigrated to the US from Chennai, Harris has established her credentials in no uncertain manner as a strong upholder of justice in her current position, fighting for the rights of immigrants, both legal and illegal, and winning some landmark cases, on both the criminal and civil front, as well as initiating anti-hate crime laws. Harris has the potential to not only become a strong candidate for Governor of California, but also become a likely candidate for the White House, beginning with the 2024 polls. She would in eight years’ time become an extremely high-profile candidate to be a running mate for a potential Democratic candidate, or be an outright candidate herself to be elected President. |
