do you know that nigeria loses about 700,000
barrels of crude oil daily to oil theft according to
the finance minister
now multiply 700,000 by the current price of
crude and then convert it to naira
only if you guys understand the humongous
amount of money being frittered away in this
country daily, then you will know it is possible
and sustainable
mind you, social welfare is necessary for you to
have a secured society. cos not every body will
get employed, not even in the US or other
advanced countries

Are Nigerians ready to pay tax to sustain it?

You are talking as if giving N5000 to 25 million people will complete the cost of providing it. You are looking at the money that will be recieved by those families and nothing else, that is not the reality of running a welfare system.

It is hard to recruit guys for Boko Haram insurgency with a scheme like this in place. Boko Haram reportedly pays higher but the risk is much much more. When a youth knows that his country cares he is less angry and radicalized-able. When people are moved from hopelessness they start to compete with their peers. The man who is sure of N5000 will start planning on how to improve himself to start making N50k and so on. Hopelessness is a birch.
Abi? Especially when most of the Boko Haram recruits are from across the borders of Niger and Chad. Talk of hoards of "Nigerians" crossing the borders to come collect their share of the national loot.

Senseless I m afraid Sir

Our dwindling national wealth and growing population can't sustain socialist welfarism

Do the maths yourself

Now Nigeria earns at most #5tr every year

Divide 5 000 000 000 000naira ÷ 170 000 000 people =# 29,411 approximately #30k

Each person #30 000 per year or #2500 per month

Can you survive on that amount.

welfare program is not for everybody. It is targeted at the unemployed, disables and aged. Ño government want a situation of never decreasing unemployment rate. While the government will continually pursue programs to get people employed, it will also provide packages for the currently unemployed to make them av the basics of life. As time goes on, the employment situation in proves and the welfare beneficiaries are reduced. Mind you with a good economic environment, lots of businesses will spring up. This will improve the situation and reduce the burden on welfare. Bros, we have lots of money wasted through oil theft, non remittance of oil revenue, embezzlement and corruption, over bloated government spendings among other channels. Nigeria isn't poor like nwaele is making you believe.

I might believe it and applaud him if he promises to institute a national birth and death registry with a computerized social security identity numbering of the citizens. That is the way societies are built not by cashing in on the poverty in the land to dangle carrots in the faces of hungry people
But first let us see those his credentials

Reason why we lack progress in this country. Let's just say it like a bursary from the government but to the poorest families. But some people will never understand it that way because they can afford N100 worth of mb per day to comment and argue rubbish.

Honestly, some shallow people are running up and down forming intellectuals when they know nothing on the subject matter. This is so bad that the people don't even know the basic responsibilities of government. Imagine people criticising social welfare program.

This mentality of corruption fighting back would only make us to be in a stagnant situation. What is corruption? the moment corruption is defined, trust me brother, measures to fight corruption would be put in place and gradually evolving to a pillar that would eventually bring corruption to its knees.

Nigeria being a mono economy does not mean that there should not be a welfare system in place. What matter is our willingness and determination to put necessary things in place to stop the system from being corrupted.

I have worked with Federal ministry of finance in Abuja before; verification to payroll. And I can tell you that there are things Nigeria government could do about corruption

Nigeria isn't qatar, we are 150million pluS, just won't work. Who is to decide which 25million get the freebies?

in as much its important to safe for the future, so also it is imperative to eat and live to see the future.
social welfarism is not a strange programme, it's been in practice in many countries for donkey years and still in practice.
you need this programme in place to reduce crime rate in the society, you can't guarantee security by simply handing the police with guns and patrolling the streets, they will get overwhelmed when there are to many Hungary people around.
to run a welfare system for a start u need an extra vibrant buoyant govt, and basically viable tax paying population. With a small civil service and minimal govt recurrent expenditure etc

Also do you know how census figures are derived? A lot of partisan politics is involved. Do u know the rate at which our population increases ?

Now let's say buhari curbs corruption, so the next thing to do instead of saving for rainy days ( make no mistake they're coming) we should spend it on feedn the poor masses whom most likely the major benefactors will be the almajiris up north, whom WILL never educate themselves or work.

Can you mention any first world country with a welfare package that does not also pay for it out of taxes that their citizens pay?

In those countries, it is the norm that if you do not show that you are actively seeking employment, you lose that benefit.

now you are talking, if government can lead by example by being prudent and accountable, it will be easier for it to convince the people to pay tax, the people will readily oblige because they know the money tax paid will still come back to them in forms of service delivery and provision of basic infrastructures by the government

welfare package can never be every body, cos it can't be sustainable that way, the government will have to develop a scientific approach in determining who deserves it or not also who should be expunged, besides there should be a duration for a particular age bracket to benefit from it

mind you welfare package is a veritable tool for curbing crime

Nigeria does not earn N5trillion a year pleas. The figure is close to N18 trillion now and potentially N50 trillion if the right things are done. In the Excess Crude Acocount alone, Obasanjo left something like $30bn, unspent funds equalling N5trillion. Jonathan's gov t is lying, very corrupt and dangerous. LNG alone gives Nigeria $2bn a year. Crude theft is actually some powerful people stealing 400,000 barrels a day which is $7.8bn (N1.4 trillion). Tax revenues lost per year is probably (N2 trillion)

If only $1billion per year is used for Buhari's Welfare program, that will amount to $4billion, in his first term.

Please explain how this welfare will be budgeted for hvn in mind census statistics is politically driven and partisan oriented,

Plus take it or leave it ,nigeria is a monolithic economy that's on the verge of loosing its livewire and will will take several yrs investing to diversify.

This is N1.5 trillion per year. This is chicken change. The GDP has been rebased to about $650billion even with the devaluation, the black economy in Nigeria is about $350billion. So Nigeria is actually a N180 trillion economy, if you just do a little more in agriculture and collect correct taxes you will achieve this. Even the current government has been thinking of the same thing and that is coming from Iweala herself. The problem is that as usual she has been afraid of what international creditors will say. You can also move a lot of the 'black economy' which is the informal sector more easily into the formal sector by doing this kind of thing. If you don't have a job, get registered and learn a trade then the government pays you and can plan for you. If you get married, you lose the benefits so we don't breed almajiris. If you get a job you automatically lose the the stipend. This will make employers more accountable. All this is commonplace in advanced economies and does not even generate arguments.

The government's N10 trillion a year budget does not even come close to what the whole country is spending or making. Diaspora funds coming from Nigerians broad alone is about $12billion which is about N2 trillion. Imagine that subsidy payments alone to fuel importers rose to N2 trillion recently and most of that was bad accounting.

Where did you get your figures from? stop spewing gibberish. Whn You talk about GDP, you're tAlking about the monetary value of an economy not the actual amount of that economy that accrues to the government in form of taxes and royalties which implies that that amount is available both to the public and privAte financeers to reinvest in that said economy to generate more returns, the part of that gdp the government can influence the polity with is the part that accrues to it and that part should be mostly gotten as a fraction of the returns of the privately accrued portion of the gdp (taxes) which meAns a strong government will be needing a stronger private sector not a dependant private sectoR.

The only wAy gmb cAn partially achieve this proposed farce of his is to print more naira which will lead to inflation and A further devaluation of the naira whiCh defeats thE Whole purpose in the End and no, I didn't read economics, just thought this would be obious for all to see

Nigerians has been so bastardized that they don't even some things basic things government is supposed to be doing for them, they have been programmed to believe it is their duty to provide good roads, provide transformers for their street, buy their own electricity meter, generate power themselves, equip the hospitals, provide security for themselves, provide water, to donate structures to their wards school, infact the list is endless.
