I wonder why there's always so much backlash on how much nigerian banks "pay" their staff.

It's a known fact almost everywhere in the world - the financial services sector is one of the highest paying.

More like five reasons why one shouldn't study a professional course in Nigeria.

All the factors listed relates with every professional course in Nigeria.

So this is not just a case for the Law profession, this is a case for a pragmatic government that has the interest of the students at heart.

Lawyers unlike Doctors are relatively broke early in their practice until they reach a certain level or become judges, then they start getting better pay with good official residence and cars.

But the fact still remains that very few Lawyers get to the top plus that there are too many people studying Law even as second or third degree unlike Medicine that is usually more difficult to study as a family Man or Woman with other degrees because it deals with life.

But when a Lawyer hammers, his contemporaries won't see his back.

You may try smooching you ego or accept the OP's points. The fact remains that he is spot on. Law is a noble profession that has been really messed with. I guess over-population contributed most to it.

This doesn't mean that any particular profession is superior to the other. This is it!

What do you mean by study law? Do people still study law? You have to specialize in a particular area of law. This applies to any professional designation, you have to know your niche and make it work for you. It's not enough to just get the degree, you have to constantly network and improve yourself. The school you study at matters but not as much as the connections you make along the way. When it comes to professionals such as doctors, lawyers, engineers and so on, you must belong to various organizations in order to reach the top of your field, stop dulling!

I disagree with this.

The Nigerian mentality is partly responsible for this perception: the mentality to hammer big and quickly.

To succeed in the legal profession you have to know your onions. How many Nigerian law graduates garner the requisite experience before going solo? And even at that most want to works with a corporate firms, which can only take so much.

My immediate elder bro works, let me rather say toil, for a firm in Lagos for pittance for some few years before going into private practice.

It was rough in the beginning, but the ends is well worth it.

Just like any other professions not everyone will make it. Teachers sef even get category.

The topic of this post will not go down well with many people who will stumble on this article. Before you start rising up your mouth in protest to this article I will like you to read in between the line and relax a bit, think over it before you comment. Please do not comment first and read later.

There is nothing wrong with Law as a profession. Through the practise of law, many people that were not guilty of the offences they were accused of regained their freedom although on a negative side, some were able to pay with their lives.

If you are studying Law in any Nigerian university and you are planning to practise Law in Nigeria, then this article is for you. Otherwise, if you are studying law for the purpose of knowledge and the accolade that goes with the profession, don't worry and don't let this post take away your sleep.

This post is not in any ways trying to discourage you from studying Law in Nigeria but a checklist list of things you might not have known or put into consideration before you started your journey.

Below are five reasons why you should not study law in Nigeria

Long training process
Law programme in Nigeria is among many other programmes that take a minimum of seven years to qualify. Yes I mean seven years when you factor in one year of National Service and another one year for Law School. It can spill over to eight or ten years if there is a prolong strike by universities in Nigeria or Failure in Law School and other unforeseen factors. After spending all these years in school your chances of getting a dream job is far-fetched and most that succeeded to attach themselves in a Law chambers are paid basically nothing.

Old aged rewarding profession
Law in Nigeria is an old age rewarding profession. You have to make your mark in the luminary environment with many successful cases to your belt before things will start to look promising for you. Although there are few exceptions, smart and street lawyers who focus on conventional areas like charge and bail, real estate and the likes can create a reasonable life for themselves. If you are attached to a chamber as a junior lawyer, most often your monthly pay will depend on number of cases you brought in that month. It takes years to become a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) which might give you that added advantage in your career success.

Underpaid Profession
Many lawyers struggle to pay for their basic monthly expenses. They hardly make enough money from their profession to buy a portable second-hand car. Recently, they have been many complain about how most banks in Nigeria treat their staff but when you put a junior banker and a junior practising law side-by-side you will see the difference immediately.

High unemployment rate / Respect
This particular situation is not peculiar to law profession in Nigeria. We knew that there is a high unemployment rate in Nigeria. But the sad part with lawyers is when their families have gathered resources and everything they have to train them for at least seven years with the hope of them contributing back to family growth, they live a life of excuses why things are not always working well. There is always a time limit for this kind of story, once the time is exceed lawyers usually use respect even in their very own family. Statement like this "no grammar bring money" will start to fizzle out from your loved ones.

Risk Factor
As a lawyer struggle with all these challenges of making it in law profession, you are always wary of the path you have cross. Most cases they handle in Nigeria come with huge risk especially political and family related cases. Imagine being in a profession where you barely make ends meet and you are also in danger of losing your life. It is something to reconsider.

We have rant about five reasons you have to reconsider before studying or practise law in Nigeria. Please note that one of the following listed attributes below have helped some lawyers sail through this path unscratched.

1. Family connect (with establish law firm or name)
2. Exceptional skills
3. Luck

The reasons you gave are quite true and applies to every profession in Nigeria. But the major reason why anyone should study law shouldn't be all abt d money cos I knw u won't find it dt early in the profession but abt fulfilling ones dream. It sets u a step ahead of everyone..Be a Lawyer or a King..

My dear, what you read on that post was written by a frustrated person with little or no knowledge about how law works. Study hard and pass your bar finals and get called to the bar. Using myself as an example:

I graduated 2.1. Served with a bank, practised with a law firm that has a SAN as the head of chambers. I moved on to join union bank, later i joined fidelity bank. From Fidelity i joined Globacom. I left Glo to a non banking financial institution and then to another. I am presently in a talk with an upstream oil and gas company. I will retire to practise. Does the idiotic op know that our options are limitless? Pursue your dreams. As an aside, the ivy league law firms like O&A, Templars, Aelex, etc pay better than banks and expose you to off shore trainings, jobs and partnerships. The OP lives in a small cocoon and may never realize what happens in real life.

As a lawyer, i have never been delayed on the road when i am doing inter state travels. The Police respect you and the ordinary man steers clear. Again I say, pursue your dreams.

The Op is not far from the truth with what he has written. In. His. Arrticle.I am a lawyer of jst a few years post call and I must say that it has not been easy but I think its worth enduring in the light of the future advantages.

The Council of Legal education should as a matter of urgency wade into the matter of proliferation and saturation of the Noble Profession by making it a second degree course and also making it harder to pass the Bar Finals.I am saying these because the lawyers already called are not really reaping the fruits of their labour, there was a proposed policy of paying new wigs 70k at least but we are yet to see any moves to implement that.

My advice to young wigs like myself is to be street smart and expand your horizon so as to be able to cope at the beginning of your careers.

NB:Me I knw say I go HAMMER for this Profession,I. Just have to learn the ropes first.
