Double standard from the Government
Re: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by charles316: 10:08am On Nov 28, 2006
it is disheartening that employers would ask for degree holders only.i feel very bad when my friends tell me they are discriminated against because of their paper certificate rather that what they know.this is the reason why this country is constantly under-developing instead of developing.it would be fair to assess an applicant based on what he knows and not paper certificate.Recently, nicon hilton emplloyed over 50 first class guys.let see.

I thank God i am an HND holder. I am working in an oil service company and i have a handfull of Bsc graduates there. The point is that some of them are as good as schools set holders, but generally they have not technical no how. My friends now listen to me, it is not a matter of having HND OR BSC, what really matters is what you have upstairs. These days companies take you for what you hve upstairs and not for the the magnitude of the certificate you are holding. Thanks.

Re: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by ishmael(m): 9:51am On Dec 04, 2006
All that one na story. The education minister and other policy makers in education are all confused. They do not even know what they are doing. Do you think having more people or every body in a country with university Degrees will make the country develop technologically?? Do they think Britian, America, Japan, Korea, India and Brazil depended so much on university education and Degrees before attaining the status of DEVELOPED COUNTRY?? Let Nigeria encourage people to go into technology and develop the country first, after that theoretical education (University system) can be used to improve on the inventions. I must say it here again that Technical/Technological education (Polytechnic system of education) is inevitable for any nation that wants to develop technologically.
Re: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by Hndholder(m): 9:58am On Dec 04, 2006
All the technological wetin shall be run in the university like that of CANADA. THIS HND is old thing.

Am waiting for you Hon. minister, I still keep to my word to kill myself if you can effectively restructure education in Nigeria.

I hope you have started preparing your hand over note just as your president is doing or he has assured you that your \'so call reform will be used\'?

Time will tell.

HND-holder, we are talking about allowing polytechnics to run degree and post graduate programs up to Phd level. We are not talking about HND, after all in Britian universities run HND programs. What we are saying is that polytechnics should be allowed to run Bsc, Msc, Phd etc programs alongside ND and HND programs. Changing Kadpoly and Yabatech into universities does not in anyway solve the problem of discrimination against HND holders, rather it will worsen it. What will happen if kadpoly and yabatech are allowed to run Masters and Phd programs as polytechnics??Government has clearly shown to nigerians that education at the tertiary level must be university education or nothing else. This also means that right from time the HND certificate and polytechnics have never in anyway been equivalent to Bsc and universities. Think about it.

That is the truth, they all look at the polytechnic as Senior Technical school

Hnd-holder:

That is the truth, they all look at the polytechnic as Senior Technical school

Yes, but they have forgotten that Britian, America and other developed countries made use of products of such schools to develop technologically.

On the consolidation of the tertiary institutions, the Secretary to the Federal Government, Chief Ufot Ekaete had on November 7 inaugurated the Presidential Technical Committee for this purpose. The idea is to convert all Federal Polytechnics and Federal Colleges of Education to campuses of proximate contagious Federal Universities. But two of the oldest, Yaba College of Technology, and Kaduna Polytechnic have already been converted in principle to City universities. According to a statement by the ministry, the consolidation is to achieve five objectives: maintain the integrity of the course content and specialised focus of the programmes of polytechnics and colleges of Education, elevate the affiliate institutions to degree-awarding establishments; eliminate the HND/Bachelor degree dichotomy in the labour market; increase the volume of academic space for admission into tertiary level education, by over 500, 000 extra candidates per annum; and strengthen the commitment of the Federal Government to quality tertiary education.http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/

Nigerian Government and policy makers are leading us to doom.
Re: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by Hndholder(m): 12:09pm On Dec 06, 2006
How about the society

Read this Even in the university here, there is an institutional organ called the congregation or the convocation. For you to be a member of the congregation, you should be a graduate and by the interpretation of the graduate, you have to be a degree holder. Because of that in the appointment of, say the Bursar, some accountants with HND are very good, some even become chartered accountants before university graduates, but you can not be a Bursar of the university with just HND, because if you do, you are no more qualified to be a member of the congregation. So such things are there.
Well the distinction can still be removed
Re: HND Certificate: An Embarrassment? by ishmael(m): 7:33am On Dec 07, 2006
That is what government should be looking and not converting polytechnics to universities, trying to kill polytechnic education, when of course university education has never in any way helped the country.

If that will solve the problem of discrimination then let them go ahead else dey are just toiling with our educational system.

Hi guys, This discripancies between HND and BSC will never stop, i am now a living withness to this Episode. Sometimes last month i was invited for ENXXON MOBIL test but i was shocked that after reachnig the venue, during the screening process it got to my turn, the guy just looked at my hard erned HND and said oh HND? you cant take this test. I was very sad because come rain come sun as long as Engineering is concerned you get the best from a polytechnic if the truth most be said. I am not in any arguement with my fellow collegue from the Universities because Engineering is practical and not theories but what did i get? Humilation from a fellow Black skin like mine.

Lets just take what comes to us in faith but which ever way the Government want to go they should Encourage the Polytechnic and remove this Dicotomy between it and the university, it is for the growth of our country and not to think of conversion or what have you. I am happy here today that i am working with a company that belive in practicals and result not assumption and theories. Lets encourage each other for the betterment of our country. sad

My brother, well said. Engineering is all about practical and result and not assumption and theories. The problem now is that it is only you and i that know that. The government does not know that one o! Let them go ahead and scrap polytechnic education in nigeria, but one thing i believe for sure is that the country will be worse without technicians and technologists from polytechnics.

Thanks for your good sense of humonur ishmeal Many Nigerians will agree with me that for any Country to measure itself as been developed, She most be technologically oriented and Grounded in the decipline of Engineering. How i wish the Federal Governemt Will use its tongue to Count its teeth just to knoe how far they Need the polytechnics. Well i am not goint to say much but however reads this Should stand to defend our course.

I read it on yesterday's Vanguard newspaper that ASUU themselves are condemning the merger of polytechnics with universities. They too are of the opinion that polytechnics and colleges of technology are needed in nigeria especially at this time that nigeria is still trying to develop. They called the so-called educational reforms "a wild goose chase"; and i quite agree with them. They maintained that the government should empower Technical colleges and Polytechnics to produce and churn out competent Technicians and Technologists rather than making everybody to start going after a university Degree that will not be beneficial to the individuals and the nation at large. I just hope those behind this kind of reforms are not out of their minds sha.

Getting a job is one thing, Progress is another. Till day we still have HND level 13 officers reporting to degree holder on level 9.

Thanks to states that obey the presidential directive on HND
