A spurned man,
whose wife had walked
out of their six-year-old
marriage about 13
months ago, allegedly slit
her throat in broad
daylight on Saturday even
as scores of passersby
watched in horror.
Sk Sabbir Ali, 30, was
arrested on the spot as he
sat weeping beside the
corpse, bloodied knife in
hand. When police arrived,
they saw a man holding a
woman's body tightly and
sobbing: "I love you, will
always love you." He
surrendered immediately,
owning up the murder.
A couple of days ago,
Sabbir, a resident of Kustia,
contacted Zeenat and
begged her to come to
Ganesh Ghosh Lane in
Tiljala on Valentine's Day,
promising that he would
not bother her again if she
showed up just once, say
police. Zeenat agreed but
insisted it should be a
public place. "Accordingly
the two met around
11.30am today. The road
was crowded. Only a few
minutes after their
conversation began, the
couple had an argument,"
said a police source.
"Sabbir suddenly pulled
out a knife and attacked
Zeenat. He slit her throat.
None of the passersby
dared intervene because
he was armed and in a
murderous rage. Everyone
was stunned when he sat
next to the bleeding body
for over 10 minutes. He
still had the knife in hand
when police arrested him,"
said an officer.
According to police and
local sources, Zeenat and
Sabbir had a love marriage
seven years ago and had
two children — a boy and
a girl. The couple initially
lived in Ekbalpore but
problems cropped up
when Sabbir could not get
a permanent job. He tried
a variety of jobs and was
lately working as a
commission agent with a
realtor. As the couple had
frequent quarrels, Zeenat
walked out last January
and filed a case of
harassment against Sabbir
at Ekbalpore police
station. Sometime ago,
she married a second time
and moved in with her
new family in a Tiljala
locality 10 days ago.

Pallab Kanti Ghosh said
that the detective
department is helping
Tiljala police in the
investigation. Detectives
are reconstructing the
crime. "We have arrested
Sabbir and recovered the
murder weapon from him.
We are trying to ascertain
what led him to murder
his former wife," said DC-
