Luchiana1:Absolutely yes! Admission spaces for all direct entry applicant for all courses are also reserved but the spaces are not as much as utme entrant. For holding a bsc, you have a greater chance of been admitted if you pass the Post DE exam, of course, they normally conduct exam for all direct entry applicants like post ume. If am not too occupy because of the semester exam in a few days now, I may quote some of the vital info as it contained in the prospectus as regards to the vital updates of what the department required for direct entry admission. |

Cmanforall: Lol..hungry dentist misleading the general public , try leaving the comfort of government work and set up private make hunger wound you.. Optometry is simply politicized in Nigeria due to black man mentality. In the USA it's a post graduate course(studies after a 4yr basic science course) just like medicine and they are the first doctors to be seen regarding eye health(primary eye care) before referral to any other health practitioner including the opthalmologist. They deal directly with the optician who cuts and glazes the spectacle prescription , they are solely in charge of lenses including contacts. some opthalmologists just try to be greedy and can't give you a proper refraction. Ophthalmologist are mainly in charge of the surgical aspects which even come once in a blue moon due to the fact that most people that require eye surgeries except for some rare cases do do in their old age (senile degeneration)e.g cataracts Prescribing drugs is something both an optometrists and opthalmologists generally can do and it's not so lucrative because most drugs used are not that expensive even the most expensive for glaucoma (3k-4k).. In private practice an optometrist is far ahead of a dentist even in the north where dentists get the most patronage.. 7 Likes |

Cmanforall: Bros no matter how bad optometry is it cant be as bad as dentistry. Y does dental school take only 25 per class, because they know they cant make money outside govt....so they want to produce the amt govt can absorb... A private practice dentist will die from hunger ooo Optometrists own 70% of eye clinics in Nigeria. In outreaches ,the line for those with teeth issues are always the shortest.Only few people... But the line for eye issues are as long as anything. Bros while there is a herbal remedy for tooth ache....non exist foe eye problems.... Pls never compare those 2 courses.... 3 Likes |

ugou: But this is what u did not tell him... 1.Optometrists diagnose and treat and prescribe drugs just like ophthalmologists. 2.Refractive problems make up 80% of all ocular problems. 3.Only few surgical proceedures are performed by nigerian ophthalmologists, mostly cataract extraction. 4.Refraction is the highest money spinner in eye specialty. 5.Ophthalmologists are quack when it comes to complex refractive proceedures. 6.Optonetry in Us,Canada and Australia are post graduate degrees and hence u must get a first degree before u can study it for 4yrs just like medicine. 7.England is desperately working to upgrade their to usa standards...and english optometrists also diagnose, treat and prescribe drugs... 8.American Optometrists perform surgery.... 9.Optometry is very lucrative in Nigeria.... Just for the fun of it..,u lied in ur definition of optometry....but i guess the op can use wikipedia also.... 7 Likes |

Re: How Lucrative Is OPTOMETRY by originbm: 10:09pm On Dec 31, 2015 |
Chartey: Dont tell him that....How is he confusing both... Can a gp touch the eyes for anything? An optometrist treats eye diseases and prescribes drugs and manages ocular conditions.... In America they perform surgery.... There are many proceedures in eye care which are non invasive and complex which the optometrist performs.... Surgery makes up only about 7% of eye care. 80 % of ocular ox can be managed without surgery.... Surgery is usually a last resort....As a matter of fact Cataract Extraction is the only restorative ocular surgery in Nigeria. Thats the only area ophthalmologists can hv an edge over optometrists. And this area is compensated 4 by the fact that the optometrist reigns supreme ib refraction. In private practice there is no much difference between both set of proffessionals... 2 Likes 2 Shares |

originbm:instead of seeing an optometrist I wld prefer to buy an eye drop. Dentistry is far better and highly patronised. Come to OAU dental hospital u will see people with dental issues like swollen tongue etc.. Do you think thinks dentistry is not been patronised. Anyway, it depent on you as the dentist. A lot of people who prefer to have a sparkling white teeth, odorless mouths, tooth:brassing etc which are just simple part of dentistry. If you are good in business eg distributing pamphlets with the name of ur clinic embedded to different people like students, civil servants etc people in market and open places. Advertisting on posters, radio and so on. I assure people will fill ur clinic up. because almost everyone will prefer a better dentition as individuals, couples and others. But not anyone need to see an eye doctor, an eyedrop will work that out. And each dental operations are very costly imaging you having 5-20 people per day that cld be about 30-100 k per day 1 Like |

HighIQ: Bros i respect dentistry as a profession... I also respect their training... But the fact is that u cant compare dental care with eye care in naija... Abroad dentistry is very lucrative because whites love sweet things... Optometry is a money spinner in nigeria.... As dull as Benin city is there are eye clinics that average 400 -500k per day. One can bear or manage a teeth problem but u cant manage an eye problem. A verilux px can cost as much as 50k depending on the place. 90% of every old person visit eye clinic.... Whole families use lenses, contact lenses, etc Only glaucoma screening can net u an average of 500k a week in Benin city if u hv a handheld tonometer... Add visual field analyser and u start to see the pic.... Even clinics without adequate equipment, whose sole sustenance is refraction in Benin city can average 120 to 200k a week. I use Benin as example because Benin is regarded as a being in the lower bracket margin when it comes to lucrativeness. There is no dental clinic as big as Unique eye care in Nigeria which has branches in Europe. Talk of those that deal in in importation of lenses and contact lenses..... The optometrist makes money both from proceedures and product sales... One contact lens work can cost 20 to 30k depending on practice. Low vision rehabilitation can cost as much as 70 to 150k per px. Bros abeg dont compare dentistry and optometry in private practice oooo. They are not equals ooo. 4 Likes |

HighIQ: Bros sorry again 1.Can u buy drugs for refractive errors? 2.Can u buy drugs for esotropia or exotropia? 3.Lets say u wake up in the money come discover say u dey see things double, will you go to pharmacy and ask for eye drops? 4.Lets say u wake up and discover that ur vision is blurred and u can no longer see things clearly, will u go and buy eyedroos? You can only self medicate for issues like conjuncivitis....at ur own risk though... Dont even compare tooth ache with ocular pain...The cornea has the highest concentration of pain receptors in the body... U never see ocular pain for ACG.... In the end sha...both are good professions 2 Likes |

HighIQ: Bros na wa for you oooo An optometrist is a doctor....his degree is OD....Doctor of Optometry Abi the doctor for their names na for dash? Dentistry is even BDS... Optometry doesnt have to be under MDCN to qualify to award a professional doctorate.... In America dentistry is not under medical council....or dont u know? In what way is a dentist more of a doctor than an optometrist? The regulation of degrees and qualifications in Nigeria is done by the NUC...And by all standards an optometrist qualifies to bearcthe title "dr" Ur dept awards u a bds unlike in usa where they award dds....so u shouldnt even bear the name doctors.... In Nigeria u r a doctor by nomenclature and not by qualification...An optometrist is a doctor by qualification because his certificate which is internationally recognized says so... If u as a bds answers doctor wat will a dds answer? Thnks. 2 Likes |

HighIQ: You are talking of govt. hospital where every single dept is always crammed with pxs... Which dept in teaching hospitals is not always crammed with px? We r talking abt private practice... How on earth can u compare an eye clinic with a teeth clinic? How many people do dental filling in nigeria... The thing most dentist do is removal of teeth... Bros go and adk people that organise rural outreach.... Eyecare is so lucrative that there are non governmental organisations that just specialise in organising outreach for eyecare... Can u as a dentist go for dental outreach without conbining it with medical? The few dental clinics i know in benin even team up with optometrists to make it multidisciplibary and thereby attract more patients.... Abeg no reason private practice as a dentist o....except u r in super rich areas like lekki in Lagos...where people care abt a good smile and can actually relate it with what a dentist or dental hygienist does.... |

originbm:you need to be patient. dont compare optometry with opthalmology or optician. Those ones are ur boss.Tell me how can an individual visit an eye clinic when we have gov hospital and eye drops. And again stop saying what u don't know a lot of people do visit a priv dental. clinic each day due to the large queue in govern hospitals. I am sure out of 20 millon; lagosians about 50 k will visit dentist in a month. And there is no way you could see such even with micro scopic view. You say ppl don't visit dentist but you as a dentist can stand out. By public enlightment and thorough adverts in universities, sec sch, companies churches and even in the media to make you clinic very popular. I am sure 1 out of ten nigerian has a mouth odour and almost every people has a yellow and horrible dentition And I assure you u will be seeing nothing less than 150 people out of the million of people in ur state per day. And again dentistry is not only focus on the teeth we have other complex issues in it.. come to oau dental hos and see people with chronic dental issue like swollen tongue etc |
Re: How Lucrative Is OPTOMETRY by homesteady(m): 10:07am On Jan 05, 2016 |
originbm: My friend don't dare compare a Dentist qualification with an Optometrist! You should stop arguing things you are ignorant about! Do optometrists learn anatomy, biochemistry and physiology in details? Do they learn Pathology and Pharmacology? Did they read medicine and surgery? So how would you place both of them on the same level in medical hierarchy? What does an optometrist even know in the body? they are not even the bosses in their field! MBBS - this is the degree awarded to medicine and surgery students, is their Doctor there? so according to your wrapped thinking, they are not doctors? 2 Likes |
