Today we have all borne witness and seen the destructive power of fake news.

A couple weeks back i mentioned that SSBN/Defense news Nigeria posting false information on twitter is a national security risk.

This week, events unconnected with SSBN/Defense News Nigeria, have played out, and the result has been people dead, properties destroyed across many Nigerian cities, curfew in place and a Nation on it's knees.

All because some people raised tension through unverified reportage on social media, amplified by the silence of the people in government.

I beg of us all, let us verify our posts before sharing on social media.

Don't post content here or on any social media capable of inciting violence and civil unrest.

Six Super Tucano aircraft will soon be delivered to Nigeria from the United States, the Chief of Air Staff, Sadique Abubakar, has said.
The aircraft are part of the 12 fighter jets sold to Nigeria by the U.S. to aid combat actions and air assaults.
He said this on Monday after defending the 2021 budget estimates of the Nigerian Air Force before the Senate Committee on Air force.
The Air Force is also expecting the delivery of 19 additional aircraft in the fight against insecurity in the North East, and air fighters from the Nigeria Air force are already in the U.S. receiving additional training on usage and the applications of the fighter jets when eventually added to the fleet of combat aircraft.
He said the Airforce had carried out operations for over 60,000 hours with half of those in the North East to fight insurgency.
We are expecting 3 J-17 fighters from Pakistan, 12 super Tucano from the United States, one M-171… Out of the 12 A – 29 Super Tucanos from the US, six are almost here as those to handle them have been sent on training for that purpose,” he said.
“A total of 200 personnel are receiving training in nine different countries of the world on handling combat aircraft. They will soon join their colleagues in the fight against insecurity and in particular, insurgency in the North East.”
After extensive discussions with the U.S. government, President Muhammadu Buhari in April 2018 placed an order for the aircraft.
He had said the procurement would help strengthen Nigeria’s national security, as well as a timely end to the Boko Haram war.

I do find it so hard to understand why a military personnel in Nigeria thinks been ruthless and brutal is one of the things associated with been a soldier.

Everything stop at the table of the president though. Imagine we have a serious president that wants all this things to end my brother. In just one month it will end.

Imagine as that soldier flog that civilian, the minister of defence release statement this morning asking the army authority to produce the soldiers at that checkpoint in less than 24hrs.

They should be discharge dishonorably from the army and charge to court. their platoon leaders and company commanders should be demoted by some years. Same for the police too, make the president send a bill to the NA that states that any military or paramilitary personnel that kills, whether is an accidental discharge or not, so far is not done for self defense the said personnel will be killed too. Any police officer that that can prove he was truly attack, but can't prove the attack would result to his death should be sentence to life in prison with hard labour.

The Nigerian military and paramilitary forces are both a voluntary organisation, so anybody not comfortable with the laws can resign.

There should be a law for the ones that harrass civilians too.

Such things are incomprehensible! It reveals an unbelievable lax command and control which indirectly shows the lack of success fighting BH is actually understandable. In Som a KDF guy shot 6 Somalis just after an ambush when some civvies blundered into the area and was immediately arrested. IIRC,2 of his pals had just been KIA in the zone and in case you didn't know Somalis aren't like normal people.
A Kenyan soldier fighting in Somalia has been arrested after he allegedly shot and killed six civilians under unclear circumstances in Jana Cabdalla region near Kismayo.

Officials said the incident occurred shortly after five other civilians were injured during a gunfight between Al Shabaab and KDF soldiers, which left one soldier dead.
https://test.standardmedia.co.ke/kenya/article/2000066877/kdf-soldier-arrested-for-killing-somali-civilians
The latter wouldn't approach such a zone without extreme compunction but Somalis often directly approach to watch or offer comment, strange as it may sound to normal people.

The fact behind the downing of President Juvenal Habiyarimana's plane is still shrouded in conspiracy theory. The Rwanda Patriotic Front, The Belgians and even the American CIA have been separately accused of being responsible for that fatal incidence.

I wouldn't admit that Paul Kagame saved Rwanda during the cause of the conflict in that country. I'l rather reckon that Kagame led the RPF to save his Tutsi people from extermination. The RPF also committed some spine chilling atrocities in those dark days

The war began on 1 October 1990 when the RPF invaded north-eastern Rwanda, advancing 60 km (37 mi) into the country. They suffered a major setback when Rwigyema was killed in action on the second day. The Rwandan Army, assisted by troops from France, gained the upper hand and the RPF were largely defeated by the end of October.

The Tutsis started all that ishyt! They invaded Rwanda from Ug in 1990. At the time they had massive Anglo Zionist support and still do but its reduced.

2. On 11 November 2020, troops of 151 Battalion deployed in Special Response Area Miyanti acting on credible intelligence embarked on an aggressive Fighting Patrol to clear Boko Haram elements in their hideout in the general area of Ladantar Village. Expectedly, the gallant troops made contact with the terrorists and engaged them with an overwhelming fire power forcing the terrorists to withdraw in disarray.

The eagle eyed troops who were at high alert repelled the criminals with superior fire power forcing them to withdraw in disarray as blood stains littered along their escape paths.

5. Similarly, on 8 November 2020, troops of 26 Task Force Brigade Garrison deployed in Gwoza observed Boko Haram criminals advancing to their location in 4 gun trucks and unconfirmed number of foot soldiers. The gallant troops engaged the marauding criminals with heavy fire power neutralizing one suicide bomber while others flee in utmost confusion.

6. Additionally, on 8 November 2020,troops of 192 Battalion deployed in Gwoza also foiled an attempted attack on their location. After the brief encounter, the criminals escaped with gunshot wounds as traces of blood of dragged casualties were seen during exploitation. However, the valiant troops captured the following; one AK 47 Rifle, one AK 47 Rifle Cover, 4 rounds of Light Machine Gun, 15 rounds of Fabricated 7.62mm, one AK 47 Rifle magazine, 2 rounds of Brownie Machine Gun, 7.62mm links and one Dane Gun.
Others include: 2 Rocket Propelled Grenade bombs and 66 rounds of PKT.

7. The troops of Operation FIRE BALL are hereby commended for their resilience, gallantry and professionalism exhibited since the beginning of the Operation. They are equally encouraged not to rest on their oars but build on the successes recorded so far.

8. The entire populace of the North East region are hereby assured of the Nigerian military high command determination to finally rout the remnants of BHT/ISWAP criminals from their enclaves in this zone.

How soldiers tortured me, dragged me on the ground till I could hardly breathe – Oyo-based lawyer

Adewale Salawu, a legal practitioner based in
Oyo State, tells WALE OYEWALE about the recent assault he allegedly experienced in the hands of soldiers and in the detention of the Nigerian Army in Ibadan, Oyo State

Can you narrate your experience on October 29, when you were said to have been assaulted by soldiers?

On that day, I was invited by the organisers of the Yoruba coalition group in Ibadan for a meeting which was supposed to be held at the House of Chiefs, Oyo State Secretariat, Ibadan at 11am. I was about 15 minutes late. When I got to the secretariat, there was a heavy presence of security operatives. I saw the police, Operation Burst team, personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and many others in front of the secretariat. There was pandemonium. I was shocked but I thought the meeting I was there for didn’t have anything to do with that. As I approached the gate, I discovered it had been locked so I parked my car at a safe distance. I had to call some of the Yoruba leaders at the venue to let them know that I was around but unable to gain access into the secretariat. One of the people I called, Prof. Ogundoro, said I should wait at the gate. He said some of the leaders would come and speak with the security agents. One of the officers asked what was happening and I tried to explain that a meeting of some Yoruba leaders was going on at the House of Chiefs.

Then my attention was drawn to something going on nearby and I was told that a soldier assaulting a man was the Commander of Operation Burst – the Commander of Operation Burst was pushing a man at that time. I was told that a soldier was pushed to the ground during the pandemonium but I was not there so I don’t really know what happened. The man that was being harassed was Mr Kunle Adelakun (Jagunmolu Agbekoya of Yorubaland). He was pinned down by the Commander of Operation Burst. He was saying that he didn’t know the person who had pushed one of the soldiers, and that it happened before he got there. So, I repeated what the man said to the officer that he said he didn’t know about it. Then the soldier said that must mean that I knew the person who did it. I asked what he meant by that and introduced myself as a lawyer.

He told the commander that since the man being held said he was not the one that pushed the said soldier to the ground, then I must know the person who did it. The Commander of Operation Burst asked them to pin me down and I was dragged on the ground to where Mr Adelakun was pinned down. Again, I identified myself as a lawyer and said I was there for a programme but he said that was not his business and that lawyers were the ones encouraging citizens to disobey them. I was shocked.

They started beating me and Mr Adelakun. Then, they started shooting and there was pandemonium. A lot of people got injured. Some other people were also arrested and we were put in their vehicles and ordered to be taken to Odogbo Cantonment. Till we got to the cantonment from the secretariat, we were beaten by the soldiers. Guns were pointed at me. The soldiers said they were going to kill us if we didn’t cooperate with them and that nothing would happen if they killed us. They said we were the ones who wanted democracy and didn’t want soldiers. We knew that if we continued to argue with them, they could shoot us so we decided to keep quiet. When we got to Odogbo Cantonment, we met about 56 other people there being ‘drilled’ (given punishment) by soldiers.

Those who were being ‘drilled’ at the barracks were not soldiers?

No, they were not soldiers. They were young men. They arrested them for allegedly causing trouble in different areas in Ibadan. They asked me to remove my top and I said I was not a criminal. They said they were not trained to respect lawyers but to kill. Some of the soldiers were in mufti so it was difficult to get their names but I can identify them. They said they were acting on the order given to them by the Commander of Operation Burst to ‘drill’ us. They asked us to sit on the ground and they were taking pictures of us while we were almost naked. It was that bad.

At what time did the problem start?

It all started around 11:25am on Thursday, October 29. We were there until around 5:30pm when a superior officer came. The officer asked the soldiers to bring us to his office. Then he said another round of ‘drilling’ should start and I told him that because of the inhumane treatment that had been meted out to me, I could no longer lift any part of my body or breathe well. He said I should go and lie down on the grass and face the sun while they continued to ‘drill’ the others. At a point, I was gasping for breath and one officer, Ojo, had to pour some water on me. The superior officer later came out and said I was encouraging citizens to disobey orders and soldiers. I was shocked. I said I didn’t know what he was talking about and that he should let me explain what happened to him but he said no. He said he had been briefed. Reluctantly, he released me and angrily said I had to come back at 9am the following morning. At that point, I didn’t have to argue with him because I just wanted to leave the place. I heard that Mr Adelakun was also released later in the day.

Did you go there the following morning?

I didn’t go there.

What steps have you taken to seek redress?

I have informed the Nigerian Bar Association about what happened. Some lawyers and Yoruba leaders are also aware of what happened. It is bad that in democratic dispensation, soldiers can go out, arrest people, take them to their cantonment and torture them. People can be handed over to the police or charged to court rather than detaining them and meting out inhumane treatment to them. You needed to see the level of threat to life, assault and molestation that we faced. It was unbearable. But at that point, there was nothing we could do because all they kept saying was that they were trained to shoot. We didn’t need to argue with them. All I kept saying was that God should save me from them. That was my experience in the hands of the Nigerian Army and they were following the orders of the Commander of Operation Burst in the state.

I never had such an experience until then. I am a lawyer and I go to police stations to sort out issues but I never had such an experience with any security outfit.

Is it true you have asthma and had an attack during the ordeal?

I had chest pain as a result of the ‘drilling’ at the secretariat, even before we were taken to the cantonment. When I got to the cantonment, the pain became so severe that I could not breathe very well.

Did you sustain physical injury as a result of the assault?

There was no visible physical injury because those people know where to hit you such that you will feel pain, yet there won’t be bruises on your body. They can brutalise you in such a way that it will not be obvious but the pain will be there.

Did you visit the hospital after the experience?

I visited the hospital and was given some drugs. I am still taking medication.

Is it true that some members of Agbekoya are still there?

I was surprised to hear on Saturday, October 31 that some Agbekoya members were still there. But I didn’t go there to confirm it. I was told that they were transferred to Iyaganku Police Station but I don’t know what the position of the police is. I have family members who are soldiers and police officers but it was already late by the time I got in touch with them.

Will you or the NBA take any legal action on the matter?

I reported what happened to the NBA and the association is already working on it. I call on the NBA president (Mr Olumide Akpata), National Human Rights Commission, Governor of Oyo State, Mr Seyi Makinde and international bodies to take up this matter and ensure such does not happen again.

We are in a democracy but we are operating a military democracy. Such inhumane treatment should not be meted to the citizens in a democracy. We saw how citizens who were protesting for their rights were arrested and charged to court. It is so sad. Citizens have the right to protest, they have the right to freedom of association and right to life.

What must be done to bring sanity to the system?

We need an overhaul of our security architecture. Their work should be well spelt out and they should know their limit. The role of the police is not to brutalise citizens. The police and military should protect the citizens. The army should protect the territorial integrity of Nigeria and contend with external forces. These are the roles that they should play. Two, we need restructuring that is freely and fairly arrived at. I don’t mean the kind of restructuring that would be beneficial to only a few people. We need restructuring that would be pleasing to all irrespective of their locality, gender and tribe otherwise; we should return to regional system of government.

Considering your experience, would you support any of your children to join the army?

I can never support any of my children who want to join the Nigerian military. I would rather give them every necessary support to join the US Army if I had the opportunity because that is one of the countries that see the lives of their citizens as valuable. Look at what is happening in the US, though the president-elect has not been sworn in, all the security architecture is already in place to do what is supposed to be done. We don’t have laws that can check people and some of the good laws that we have are not being implemented.

Reprehensible.... absolutely reprehensible...
Those soldiers must be fished out and publicly punished for their actions.
This is not allowed in any sane democracy.

ps. we are still waiting for public information on the prosecution of the so called captain and soldiers who murdered police personnel and freed a kingpin kidnapper in public view; to the greatest shock of all sane Nigerians, the NA and Nigeria's AGF seem to be shielding these culprits.
So when Nigerians begin to make generalizations about the distraught state of the NA, how do people defend the NA when a case as glaring as the murder of police personnel still hasn't been publicly prosecuted. Is it because the rot eats deep?
An apologist might say "oh the NA have their rules" to which a sane person says, that's bunkum; and even if it were true that the NA has its rules, soldiers and a captain accused of being kidnap-ring assailants and police-murderers should be profusely punished in public in order to restore a level of respect for the NA and prevent people from generalizing that the NA is corrupt.
Its possible that the accused soldiers and their captain are in a dungeon somewhere but again the secrecy behind this whole issue leads the public to make up their own stories about how the NA protects its own; its own in this case are accused of being kidnap-ring assailants and police-murderers
If the NA "has its rules"
public opinion has its own rules too

"One good soldier against evil
We call it valiant when a gun holding soldier shoots a gun holding terrorist
What do we call a soldier that speaks up for the unarmed he swore to protect
Lance Corporal Harrison Friday - One good soldier"

Here is a soldier that has been publicly arrested, humiliated and labelled a criminal by the NA
what's his crime? he asked his fellow soldiers to stay true to their oath and not turn their guns on innocent civilians
meanwhile soldiers accused of been kidnap-ring assailants and police-murderers are enjoying silence.
On this case, its nothing but shame, absolute shame.

Shallom
Allahu akbar
God is good
