A military professionalism & effectiveness depends on three tiers; DOCTRINE, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING. In the ongoing CION war against BHT in the north east ,there are two arms of the armed forces that are basically involved in the fight against the islamic sect BH.

What do you think that these two arms of the military should be doing that they are not doing well or not doing at all in regards to doctrine, equipment & training. And how can the government and security council come in terms of security funds/budget and other support.

your contribution please... grin
Please note my submissions are my honest opinion and that nothing typed by this moniker is out of superior knowledge

Doctrine wise: Pass mark for both services

Training: We have not rested on our oars looking at us receiving mentoring from the UK military and forging partnership with various Friendly countries

Equipment: For the Army..this is where IMHO I think there is more to be desired

Training has gotten a lot better
BIMATT TRAINING has been a great help, theresults show for themselves and it should continue
things to improve on :
Response time from the NAF should decrease to less than 10 minutes.
the NIGERIAN AFSF and the SBS need to hunt down the leadership of bh and concentrated effort must be sustained.
Next step to pacify the Mandara mountains

DOCTRINE - PASS MARK

TRAINING - PASS MARK

EQUIPMENTS - A LOT NEEDS TO BE DONE.

ARMY - THE ARMY NEEDS MORE MORTAR,ARTILLERY PIECES, PERIMETER DEFENSE WEAPONS LIKE CLAYMORE ETC , AT LEAST INTRA SQUAD RADIOS,NIGHT VISION GOGGLES, M. R. E (MEALS READY TO EAT) , AT LEAST A SQUAD AUTOMATIC WEAPON LIKE THE GPMG OR RPK TO AT LEAST A GUNNER TO EVERY FIVE SOLDIERS AND A DEDICATED AIR WING WITH NIGHT FLYING CAPABILITIES.

ALL THESE CAN BE UTILISED AND WE WILL STOP LOOSING SMALL UNITS THAT DON'T HAVE MRAPS OR ARMOURED VEHICLES TO ASSIST THEM. PERIMETER DEFENCE WEAPONS LIKE CLAYMORE OR MINES CAN BE DEPLOYED ROUND THEIR PERIMETER  TO SLOW DOWN ENEMY FORCES. THE AMERICAN FORCES EVEN USE WHAT THEY CALL "FOO GASS", A DEADLY MIXTURE OF "PETROL AND DIESEL" POURED IN DRUMS AND BURIED INCHES BELOW THE GROUND ROUND THEIR PERIMETER. WITH THE PERIMETER SECURED WITH PERSONAL DEFENSE WEAPONS, EACH SOLDIER WITH AN INTRA SQUAD RADIO CAN RELAY MESSAGES TO THE C.O WITHOUT HAVING TO LEAVE HIS POSITION WHILE THE C.O USES HIS MAIN RADIO TO CONTACT THE AIRFORCE,DIVISION/BATTALION COMMANDER FOR ARTILLERY SUPPORT OR REENFORCEMENT.

MORE MORTAR OR ARTILLERY PIECES WILL ENABLE EVEN SMALLER UNITS DEFEND THEMSELVES BY LAUNCHING EXPLOSIVES INTO A PRE-CORDINATED FIRE PATTERNS TO COVER THEM IN A WALL OF STEEL. EVEN TWO ARTILLERY PIECES CAN PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR JUST FOUR MEN TILL REENFORCEMENT ARRIVE TO SUPPORT THEM. MORTARS TOO WILL GO A LONG WAY IN SUPPORTING UNITS TOO.

SPECIAL FORCES CAN EVEN DEPLOY BEHIND ENEMY LINES WITH PREDETERMINED ARTY SUPPORT BARRAGE AND PERIMETER DEFENSE WEAPONS. EVEN IF A WAY IS FOUND TO PRESERVE MEALS,LIKE JOBITEX DID YEARS BACK, THEY'LL JUST NEED TO DEPLOY IN BEHIND ENEMY LINES OR ZONES, GATHER INFORMATION FOR DAYS AND A COPTER WILL PICK THEM AFTER DAYS OF OBSERVATION.

IF THEY'RE DISCOVERED,ARTY UNITS CAN COVER THEIR WITHDRAWAL TO A SAFER PICKUP SPOT. IT WILL GO A LONG WAY IN HELPING THEM CAPTURE TOP BHT.

THE SQUAD AUTO WEAPONS GIVES INCREASED FIREPOWER TO THE MEN EVEN WHEN THERE'S NO ARMOUR AND A NIGHT VISION GOOGLE TO EACH MAN ON THE FIELD ALSO INCREASES THEIR CAPABILITIES TO FIGHT EVEN IN THE DARKEST OF NIGHTS. BARB WIRES CAN ALSO BE DEPLOYED FOR PERIMETER DEFENSE.

AIRFORCE - THE AIRFORCE NEEDS MORE PLATFORMS WITH NIGHT FLYING CAPABILITIES. THE JF17 AND TUCANO DEALS, WE'VE NOT HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT THEM. THEY NEED MORE PLATFORMS AND FAST RESPONSE TIME TO HELP SOLDIERS UNDER ATTACK.

NAF COMMENCES TRIAL OF AIRCRAFTMAN KALU BERNARD

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today commenced the General Court Martial (GCM) trial of Aircraftman Kalu Bernard who allegedly shot and killed Aircraftwoman Oladipupo Sholape on 12 March 2017 at the NAF Base, Makurdi. The court martial, which was inaugurated today, consists of the President and 6 other members in addition to a Judge Advocate and 2 waiting members. Present at the inauguration were also the convening officer, prosecuting officers, 2 defence counsels representing the accused, witnesses and some members of the Press.
The President of the GCM, Group Captain Elisha Philip Bindul, while inaugurating the military court at 101 Air Defence Group Makurdi, gave a comprehensive breakdown of the trial procedures as well as the rules and regulations to be observed during the trial. The highlight of the trial was the reading of the charges levelled against the accused, Aircraftman Kalu Bernard and the plea by the Defence Counsel for time to study the charges and other documents. The GCM was subsequently adjourned to 2 June 2017 for further hearing on the case.
The inauguration of the court martial, which is part of the formal law chain in the Military, is coming up after a series of procedures as enshrined in the Armed Forces Act 105 of 1993 as amended. The NAF is apparently poised to ensure that justice is served to all concerned parties in the matter.

DOPRI ADVISES MEDIA PRACTITIONERS TO FOCUS MORE ON PATRIOTISM
The Director of Public Relations and Information (DOPRI), Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya has advised media practitioners in the country to promote patriotism in the interest of national development. The DOPRI gave the advice yesterday, 23 May 2017, during a courtesy visit to the management of DAAR Communications plc in Abuja. He noted that the media occupied a vantage and strategic position in nation building and as such could not afford to place commercialism above patriotism in the dissemination of information.
Air Commodore Adesanya commended the unique position of the African Independent Television (AIT) in the broadcasting industry in Nigeria and solicited its continual support to the NAF. The Director stated that the NAF places high premium on the timely and accurate dissemination of its activities in order to keep the public informed. This is more so as the NAF was making great strides in the battle against insurgency, all forms of criminalities nationwide as well as in Research and Development, girl child education, healthcare and welfare of its personnel. While expressing the warm appreciation of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar to DAAR Communications plc, for its support, the DOPRI craved the indulgence of reporters to continue to seek clarification from the NAF on issues of public interest before dissemination for accurate and balanced reporting.
In his response, the Managing Director, DAAR News Services, Mr Imoni Mac-Amarere noted the cordial relationship existing between the NAF and DAAR Communications plc, promising that it would be sustained. Speaking further, Mr Mac-Amarere stated that although the military operates in a regulated environment, efforts should be made to ensure prompt and timely release of information to the media to avoid speculations and rumors regarding any military operations.

yeap i totally agree with you.

Note equipment will determine your doctrine ; which i think the NAF is really working hard in equiring state of the art-equipment, in months to come new helos will be coming in, tucanos & jf17 and more drones. also the NAF is trying in the area of indegeneous technology for its use which is yielding positive result.

for the NA which is the biggest arm of the military and the major player in the ongoing COIN in the north east, i think the federal government is not doing well in the area of budget. by now NA should be riding t90 & ifv; bmp 3&2 and other 3rd generation vehicle into the battle etc. using MRAPS to replace IFV has leed the army to serious fatalities, i think i posted an article recently on these ;"IS AN IFV AN MPV/MRAP OR VISA VERSA".

i hope the new APC/SPV assembly and small arms production extension in DICON will come to plan/exixtance has being allocated in the 2017 budget.

On training has well in comparism to the NAF, i think the army is lacking behind and these bores down to the reason that the army is over-stretched and everymen available is in one theatre or the other i.e; NORTH-EAST,NORTH CENTRAL & SOUTH-SOUTH etc.

my bottom line opinion is that the army has to do more in the training aspect and the government should do more in terms of budget and state of the art equipment for the army.

Well said

Exactly..I am awaiting the NA investing in IFVs. We can make do with the present T72s for now

In fact...if it were up to me I would convert the T55s to heavy IFV/APC
