ShymmexOBE: The FG needs to put a national plan in order to decentralise Lagos, however many things are playing a role in companies sitting their factories in Lagos and the most important is access to the port and the security, the only other two logical geographic areas to build a factory would be - Ogun state(close enough to Lagos port, better real estate value, safe ) Bayelsa - I'm not sure what the topography is like, but there is access to the sea and a good amount of land, but the ND boys have compromised safety.. For any company BAD place Ondo State - Access to the sea, real estate at reasonable value , but the ND situation affects safety. So you see if you are the CEO of a major international organisation looking to invest vast resources in Nigeria you'd always take Lagos, Ogun state are the only ones taking Lagos business and that due of proximity. For industry to spread effectively across Nigeria the national rail and road network needs to be improved drastically, any company especially those trading in heavy finished products/ raw material , would need to be able to transport raw materials from port to factory safety, with ease and at cost, and distribute finished products , only rail can effectively enable that capacity inland. Nigeria does need to realise it's geographic advantage, if you draw a square about Africa and put a pin in it's middle you'd be marking out Nigeria, we have a very good port and in effective range of over 15 African countries. That is how CEO and logistics management reason when choosing a location for hubs and factories, ever wondered why many companies have a logistics hub in Holland ! its within 3-5 hours of many central EU countries. The electrical power situation also needs urgent attention 2 Likes |

Access to the sea outside Lagos is treacherous because of swampy mangrove and more recently pirates .Follow the map Lagos is the same latitude as Accra Lome Cotonou Roughly with the same kind of access for large vessels. The is is not the same all the way from Ogun to Akwa Ibom or Calabar which is considerably inland . In the Niger Delta there is a current bringing the River Niger to sea long with its branches. There will need to be dredging which Goodluck Jonathan could and should have done. He did not and now the country is broke. I believe if the new government i thinking of stopping amnesty programme nd comes up with a meaningful programme Nigerians will support it but experience showed in the past a tendency to kidnap expatriates/white folk so there is a problem 2 Likes 1 Share |

I understand why lagos is always the first port-of-call because its the former federal capital and commercial nerve centre of the country.Nevertheless, lagos is already overpopulated, why can't some of these plants be sighted in oyo, ogun or ondo'and if they're looking for states with sea ports, what happened to port Harcourt and warri ports? Lagos is already standing on water, let it not be swallowed up one day from overpopulation. |

sweetgala: In as much as the FG ought to work assiduously to decongest Lagos, I believe those who voted for one party to govern the SW region did so basically for pseudo-regional-government. You can't always wait for the oval office - there are certain things you can do yourself, especially when you have folks with the same interests around you. And I'm sure the proximity between Lagos and other SW states is that great that they can't use the roads, even if the rail network is in comatose. This show of greed and lumpish style of governance is a catch-22 situation - lose lose for everyone with no winner. In as much as concentrating every industry into particular space will increase taxes accrued, while stifling the growth/development of other places. It will also attract excessive population growth and excessive pressure on the amenities - and on the long run the revenue generated wouldn't be able maintain the pressure on those amenities. Also, you will create an environment that's not conducive for living, hence the place is a giant slum. Now when you look at it critically, you should be able to deduce the following: - You stifled the growth of other places. - You created unnecessary pressure that outweighs the revenue on the amenities. - You created a giant slum that isn't conducive for living. So who's the winner here? 1 Like |

Someone asked why Kia built the plant in Lagos. People fail to realize that most businesses take long-term actions based on well calculated steps that would yield their desirable outcome, which is more profits. If you're going to build such a long-term project in a challenging environment like Nigeria, you have to weigh the following factors: 1. Large pool of workers and graduates that can be trained – the plant cannot run itself. 2. Banks big enough to handle your transactions and provide you access to quick money – wire transfers to-and-from Korea and access to dollars will be critical. 3. Quick and cheap access to ports – you need to get your parts quickly. 4. Logistics 5. Infrastructure 6. Desirability of your location to your employees - if you build a plant in the middle of nowhere, a lot of people will not want to go there. 7. Favorable taxes and tax breaks – at the end of the day, nobody likes to pay taxes. 8. Security 9. Customer location – as a business, you need to be close to your customers. 10. Location of similar companies – you now have a pool of employees to poach from. A combination of the factors above will determine your chosen location! Kia is in it to make money for their investors and you can be rest assured that whatever they plan will be based on sound business judgment and not emotion. 1 Like 1 Share |

Perhaps, if you ever lived in saner climes- you would know that the government directs companies to different parts of the country once they feel a particular place is too congested. They can take it or leave it. You don't take up everything to the detriment of yourself. That's why London is the way it's. 2 Likes |

I ll say the truth either it kills the bigots or not. I ll stop advising them when Biafra Nation is finally pronounced as one of our neighboring countries. The Bigots from the East ll soon be here to cry and drool over my sincere advice; It's their trademarks. Innoson messed up his business out of Tribalism ; Yes i said it, he bleeped up big time. Having taken my time to look into its progress over the years, the only surviving grace the company has is federal and state governments' patronage. He sited his automobile business far away in the East where there is no business viability for automobile business. If all these well established automobile companies could site their business/factory in Lagos and Ogun state, I don't see any reason why Innoson should take that business to the East. Innoson needs massive publicity and that could only be achieve in a cosmopolitan city like Lagos. Trust me, If not cos of Federal and state govts' patronage, Innoson won't be in existence anymore. What Innoson ought to have done at the beginning was to have established the cooperate headquarter of Innoson business in Lagos and small factory somewhere in Ogun state or Oyo state and the big factory in the East if he must. With Innoson business in Lagos/Ogun state, factory in Ogun/Oyo state and Apapa port right there with massive commercial publicity towards other west Africa countries. Innoson would be smiling to the Bank while all these foreign automobile companies will be struggling to survive However, I love him for one thing, the preparation for eventuality; separation. I believe he did what he did out of this point at last paragraph. War out. Yes!!! i said "War out". O boy!!!! No peace out as far as Igbos are concerned. They must fight and that is why you need to prepare in advance like me. |

Re: KIA Motors Unveils Multi Billion Naira Plant (25,000 Cars/year) In Lagos by Wallie(m): 8:48pm On May 18, 2015 |
ShymmexOBE: Not exactly. I can't speak to London per se but what you do is to zone an area. Certain types of businesses are not conducive within city limits due to pollution and/or danger. BUT almost every city, state or country ACTIVELY competes for industries to be located within their geographic limits especially if the industry does not have an undesirable environmental or moral effect on the local population because that means more tax revenue. More tax revenue means more money for schools, hospitals, fire stations, police, trash collection, clean water, etc. The reason this does not happen in Nigeria is because most states are oblivious as to how to generate IGR due to the way the FG distributes “free” money at the end of the month! All the states have to do is to just sit there and wait for money to show up in their accounts at the end of the month! |

iiiyyyk: No but can you explain why certain industries congregate to one area? There are 50 states in the US but most industries congregate to a particular geographic area. Financial industry - New York Technology - Silicon Valley, Boston, NY Agriculture - California, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Texas, Illinois, Kansas, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Indiana Automobile industry - Detroit Oil & gas - Texas, California, Oklahoma, and Louisiana Lastly, take a look at the article below to see what states do here in the US/

proudlyhandsome: Your point is completely baseless, do u need to go to car factory or assembly before buying a car? The location of a factory has nothing to do with sales and management. Most goods sold in USA are manufactured outside USA china Asia. All Innoson need to do is too open good show rooms all nigeria, have a good management and marketing tteam. May God bless Innoson and other Igbo sons who sited their companies in igboland to create jobs for our people. I found it disgusting that young Igbo youths have to travel 450km to lagos to do little factory jobs of 50k. Its unfair, invesments to to spread all over the country. 1 Like |

juicee1: Bull crap!! First of all, this was GEJs inotiative, NOT Lagos. 2nd, suting the factory in Lagos has to do with the large market there compared to most states, and access to the ports/gateways. That said, this factory wouldve been better off in other states. Rivers and Akwa Ibom definitely come to mind. |
