GEJ's auto policy just represents the bitter-sweet relationship the man had with Nigerians. On one hand, the policy was pretty decent, attracting foreign car makers to set up assembly hubs in Nigeria, boosting the economy and creating jobs. On the other hand, it constituted a renewed offensive on ordinary Nigerians and common sense . Needlessly jacking up import duties for imported cars even when local production was still less than 1% of demand, pretending as if increase in import duties was the only way to make investment attractive (as if tax breaks and car purchase schemes weren't enough) and shamelessly giving waivers to crony car retailers to import at old rates. One hopes that Buhari will take this scheme, support it with common sense decisions and excise all cronyism from the matter. Then Nigeria will become better. 4 Likes 1 Share |

bigass:There definitely are, but you'd have to find them. The majority of Nigerians who are that good you either find in foreign universities or in the private sector. Even if you'd like to help out in the public service you'd need a godfather to recommend you. The plain fact is that we only get good public servants once in a while. Can you bet money that the incoming government will find someone just as capable to run that ministry? I bet not. |
