Wallie: Yea ur argument is ok, but you know in nigeria politics influences every thing. Thats whwhy tru federalism should be implemented in nigeria, so that every state can create its own enabling ènviroment. Eg 40% of our national power suply goes to lag, that alone attrate any investment comming to nigeria. 1 Like |

Wallie: I think the fundamental problem with Lagos is the lack of a well-defined identity. Who does Lagos represent? Is it the Financial hub and the centre for the headquarters of multinationals? The port hub? Or basically the primary hub for everything? A city that's just 999.6 km² in size should NEVER have 20 million people living there - in saner climes, that'll be population explosion and a humanitarian crisis. So what are those in-charge doing to effect checks and balances on this? That's how the population in cities like London are controlled, hence Milton Keynes was built - and certain industries were moved to other parts of the country. Even now, with the population moving closer to 10 million - they're already planning to move a few companies to Birmingham and Manchester, and new cities are already being planned. And that's a city almost twice the size of Lagos. There are states within proximity of Lagos (Ogun for example is more or less a satellite city to Lagos...and I don't think Ondo is that far from the place) and within city limits, to benefit from whatever qualities Lagos has to offer. Why can they site some of these companies there? More taxes/revenues are inconsequential when the source(s) of those taxes/revenues will attract excessive population with utter stress on the amenities that the taxes/revenues wouldn't be able to cater to. It's basically like having a lot of cash with expenses that outweighs the cash you have. So what's the point? You might as well be broke with no cash/expenses/debts - than end up being heavily indebted. Lagos needs an identity. 1 Like |

ShymmexOBE: Lagos is 3475 square kilometres. In order to understand your point it wound help to understand what you mean by "identity" and why tha is a necessary or desirable thing for Lagos. At any rate what does having an identity have to do with being overpopulated. Singapore is a city nation 1/5 the size of Lagos. with 5 million people. What is its "identity" . There is nothing wrong with having ideas or opinions but that does not a reality make. Facts ,figures and research is the kernel of hard analysis. I do not think you have a point 1 Like |

omonnakoda: Lmao...I know you're smarter and more knowledgeable than this. However, I think you're trying to bait me into a needless back and forth. Anyway, in a city-state, anything goes because the city is also the country. But in countries with different cities, the cosmopolitan cities have identities. I have listed cities that are the financial hubs of cities in different countries, save for Paris, which also represents art/fashion/culture. What's the identity of Lagos and why are they trying to make Lagos the counter-productive primary hub of everything? That's just greed. Folks from the place can't even think about building a family house there in a serene place, without the fear of the needless gigantic slum that they have turned the place to. Sad. 1 Like 1 Share |

omonnakoda: Let me just posit a few cities and their identities, and hopefully you'll deduce your definition, despite how obvious it's that you're feigning ignorance (my last reply to you). 1). London: Identity - financial hub. 2). Liverpool: Identity - port hub. 3). Frankfurt: Identity - financial hub. 4). New York: Identity - financial hub. 5) Edinburgh: Identity - financial hub. 6) Cape Town: Identity - port hub. 7). Johannesburg: Identity - financial hub. What's the identity of Lagos? 1 Like |

ShymmexOBE: I am still Not sure what you mean by identity e.g Muhammadu Identity Fulani Identity Muslim Identity Father Identity Husband Identity Soldier Identity Politician etc so without providing a definition it is impossible to proceed London Port is much bigger than Liverpool, much much so London may be described as a TOURIST HUB one of the biggest in the world There is a diesel engine manufacturing plant in Dagenham ,it is the largest in the world so there is significant manufacturing going The RETAIL industry in London especially for non-Food is often rated the biggest in the world I am not sure what you mean by identity as in the Buhari example above what is his "identity" The other question is it necessary always and your point that Lagos needs it? How why? |

iiiyyyk: You are right bro. That is what happen in sane society where industries are spread all over the country so as to reduce Rural/Urban migration, but unfortunately Nigeria is far from US. Pls, don't compare US to Nigeria as far as business viability is concerned. In US, just like automobile industry in US, as a musician you wouldn't need to travel all the way to New York to become famous as a musician but in Nigeria, you must come down to Lagos state if you are to make it big in the music industry and example of this is abounds 1 Like |

omonnakoda: I'll engage you but I shall implore you to keep it civil and voodoo-casting free, without wishing my parents death - if and when we disagree (that's something I won't tolerate). And I'll be as civil as possible on my part. 1). You don't need to be a Professor of English language to know that "identity" signifies the primary characteristics of place in this context. Ever heard of the term "place-identity"? Now, in simpler term, what's the place-identity of Lagos? 2). You're conflating two different issues here, while obfuscating my point. I cited Liverpool cos it's known as the port hub (that's the primary characteristic of Liverpool and what's the city is about - its identity) not cos it has a bigger port than London. The port in London caters to the need of those in London, while other ports cater to different parts of the country. Unlike Lagos which caters to the whole country. And London isn't known for its port, apart from the need to have one there cos it's a coastal city. Moreover, the London port isn't the biggest in the UK - the biggest port in the UK is in Suffolk. And there are gazillion of ports all over the UK. 3). Is Dagenham in Essex or London? And when was the Ford diesel engine manufacturing plant in Dagenham built? Well, in case you don't know, it was built in the 30s when Dagenham was more or less a village - to have proximity with Ford headquarters in Brentwood, Essex. Folks started moving to Dagenham in the 90s and noughties, and it's evident based on how relatively new majority of the houses there are. And I'm sure the plant would be moved out of there soon, just as they're moving a lot of factories out Thurrock and other parts of the London-Essex axis. So you basically have no point, cos London extended to Essex way after the plant was sited there. 4). What has the retail industry catering to the daily needs of the people got to do with the discourse? If you had said that the companies manufacturing the retail products were based in London, then you would have had a point. However, the overwhelming majority of these companies are outside London, while the rest are imported from other countries. Conversely, I'd wager that majority of the manufacturing companies in Nigeria are located in Lagos. Got more to add? |

ShymmexOBE:I am not seeking "engagement" whatever that means Like I said there is nothing to discuss without a definition. You choose whatever works for you of what identity means. I can only assume what you mean or "deduce" but I do not want a situation where I make and assumption and subsequently you shift the goalposts. You made a very assertive claim so the onus is on you to define what you mean when you say Lagos needs an Identity. I will work with whatever definition you choose. What is of interest to me is what it means and why Lagos needs it. London to my mind has an identity as a tourist hub. It has an identity as a property hub to my mind so it is important that when we have a dicussion about identity we are talking bout the same thing The importance of the retail industry is its size as a component of GDP and an employer of labour.Whereever what it sells is manufactured is irrelevant to those considerations. Diamonds are not mined in Antwerp. These days we talk of Value addition not just manufacturing. There is plenty of Value addition and value addition JOBS in the retail sector The London retail sector as component of GDP is massive the turnover at £65 billion is more than Nigeria receives from oil. You ask what that has to do with the discourse. I ask WHAT IS THE DISCOURSE? if you refuse to say what you mean by "identity" we are only talking at cross purposes. So you define it an I will work with that |

Kia has a reputation these days as a great performing and reliable car among economy cars in USA... I hope the manufactured or assembled ones in Lagos will carry on the same reputation... |
Re: KIA Motors Unveils Multi Billion Naira Plant (25,000 Cars/year) In Lagos by Nobody: 11:54pm On May 18, 2015 |
omonnakoda: Okay, I already what I meant by "identity" in this context, and it's called "place-identity". What a place is primarily designated/designed for. London is a tourist hub cos of its historical landmarks, it's history, and the royal family. However, is that what London is known for, or designed/designated for? Tourism is just on the peripheral - London lives on being the financial capital of the world. That's where most of its revenue comes from. Lol, if you're going to compare the differential between how much London generates from its retail sector to what Nigeria makes from oil - you might as well compare the GDP of London to what Nigeria makes from oil. Erm, let's do that - shall we? - The GDP of London is: $835.6billion...while Nigeria earns less than $80billion from oil annually. Are you happy now? |
