Good morning.

These are indeed very interesting times.

For those of us that might have spent some time on the internet and Nairaland, surfing to keep abreast with the latest developments, especially as they relate to politics, the news portal "thebreakingtimes.com" only barged its way into our consciousness just a couple of weeks ago with her libellous story about the "President's N2Billion Asokoro Mansion" (www.thebreakingtimes.com/exposed-president-buharis-n2-1-billion-asokoro-mansion/) , a story that has since been proven to be anything but true (newsdiaryonline.com/gen_ejected.htm).

Now, we all agree propaganda plays a critical role in every government the world over. The government uses it, ditto the opposition, to advance their agenda. Quite frankly, a government or opposition can hardly survive without it. Not all propaganda are destructive as most people tend to think, some are actually genuinely for the public good. To buttress this point, I had to look to wiki:
While the term propaganda has acquired a strongly negative connotation by association with its most manipulative and jingoistic examples, propaganda in its original sense was neutral and could refer to uses that were generally positive, such as public health
recommendations, signs encouraging citizens to
participate in a census or election, or messages
encouraging persons to report crimes to law
enforcement
.- Wikipedia

There is no gainsaying PDP as a party nurses an ambition to retake Aso Rock from APC, but in so doing, it is important that they demonstrated a bit of decorum and grace.

Thebreakingtimes, from my checks, was founded in september 2014 and had their first publication in october of the same year. First, the timing of its birth is suspect, and even more so, its distinctively destructive publications.

Some folks might want to shut readers critical of their publications up, pointing to Sahara Reporters and, perhaps, Premium Times. They argue both newspapers are operated under the thumb of APC.

Saharareporters.com has over 5,000 publications since it was founded (2006), has been supported by donors such as Ford Foundation and Omidyar Foundation to stay afloat. It's been referred to as the "Nigerian wikileaks" by the reputable tabloid, Daily Beast, and her publications have received reviews and criticism from notable Nigerians such as Soyinka and VIPs like Chris Olukolade, Obanikoro, a Zimbabwean Minister. Hell, even the spokesman of PDP, Olisa Metuh, once called them taking a swipe at former President Jonathan!!

They've published countless number of articles highly critical of government and the opposition. On this forum, we've had numerous pro PDP posters post anti-APC articles published by them, but they still hypocritically insist the media is being bankrolled by the opposition. Funny huh?

Like Sahara Reporters, like Premium Times. They have editors with names and contacts, but when you visit the "about" page of thebreakingtimes, you find absolutely nothing as regards the owners, editors, or publishers, just some pedestrian balderdash about their mission statement and all that.

Some people have said it is run by some aide to Obanikoro with the twitter handle "xyz", but we have NO NAMES on them. If one were to file a case of libel against them, who does one sue??

What these guys are doing is simply not propaganda, it is sheer blackmail and slander. After seeing their latest story brought to the forum by some PDP supporter regarding the VP being shut out of a security meeting second time in a row, I decided to take a stroll to the site and what I saw made my guts twist in disgust. What man with a soul and conscience does things like this?? I understand we live in a democracy and should uphold its principles which includes the freedom of expression, but come on... This is an outrage!

I read somewhere the immediate past Deputy Speaker of the House, Ihedioha, admonished that PDP used everything in its power to bring APC and the government to her knees, including using tools such as "propaganda and blackmail". Is this PDP doing so via thebreakingtimes

As time goes by, and as events unfold, I'm hopeful some of us would see this government for what it truly stands for- our collective good- and join hands with our fellow compatriots to give her the support she needs in succeeding. Seun, Lalasticlala and other stakeholders have a role to play in this regard especially as regards the coverage given to news coming from this source (thebreakingtimes). We must understand that we would be the ones holding the hot end of the rod in an event the government fails- God forbid.

God help us all.

Long live Nigeria.

Good observation.

Another tactic they use is to make up fake Yoruba names as their correspondents.

It is a very devious news agency, very unprofessional and full of lies.

And to even discover that not a single of their so-called "breaking news" was reported by any of the other mainstream media is nauseating.

I have since learnt to ignore the useless "news outlet".

Here is a news portal that first claimed that PMB owns a house valued at 2.1 billion naira; then claimed days later that PMB's declared assets was 900 million naira. Common sense should tell any reasonable person that should their first claim be right, PMB's assets should be above 3 billion naira and not 900 million naira which is way below the value of the mansion.

Let's pray that Nairaland, in its bid to generate traffic does not end up becoming a forum for the kids where soft news and blackmail become the order of the day.

@omenka, you beat me to this. I started disregarding the destructive propaganda machine, when they wrote on Aisha Buhari's watch. I resolved within myself to do a background check on them. Thank God you already did.

This write up brings up the question that has been running through my mind for sometime now. Do we have any professional body saddled with the responsibility of regulating the reportage of news agencies online ?? Is "thebreakingtimes.com" a registered online news agent.??

Great job bro.

Exactly! I was even going to add that. Very funny how most of their writers are Yorubas. Someone is definitely trying to throw the public off their scent. What a shame.

Why would anyone take a site that has consistently posted made up shlt seriously? Oh yeah, i forgot how ldiotic Nigerians are.

Just because a 'so called news site' has a .com domain doesn't mean its legit in anyway.

It really wont, dont forget they still send stuff from HopeForNigeria to their frontpage. Thats the site that circulated stories about Buhari marrying his wife at 9 and other sorts of bullshlt.

Just look at their recent Posts here - https://www.facebook.com/hopefornigeria Basic Fake Gossip nonsense and some twisted/madeup stuff.
But that still wont stop anyone from believing/promoting the Next 'Breaking News' they come up with to attack Buhari/APC.

PassingShot:

This thread is about a particular fake news portal and it is not what you've addressed.

Come back and address the issue and stop the rant.

Hypocrite, there were several news from twitter, facebook and other unverified source that was used to blackmail Jonathan on this forum, Did you or Omenka open this silly thread asking seun to verify source before placing any thread on homepage?

The standard still remain, if any thread/news is posted here, if there is a source to it, you and fellows have no right to complain.

Just enjoy the party man

Ohimai Godwin Amaize owns thebreakingtimes.com. He is the S.A media to Obanikoro and he's popularly called Mr. Fix It. He's on Facebook with that name.

PDP always riding on the crest of ignorant & f.oolish Nigerians who are fond of posting obnoxious comments trying to absolve them [PDP] from their inequities while blaming Buhari & the APC for those atrocities.

No matter how far lies travel, truth will always catch up with it & overtake it.

Just dance to the music and stop blabbing, Though i want Buhari to succeed for the benefit of poor Nigerians, but APC as a party and you in particular do not have the moral right to spew this nonsense.

I remember seun wanted to make it an offense for members of this forum not to use derogatory words/insult political office holders, please go back to that thread and search for the response of these people you mentioned here.

Egift, Passingshot, Obiagelli, Demdem, Gbawe, Beremx, NgeneUkwenu, Donphilopus, Jarlons, et al.

It was an era you'all felt comfortable calling the president of Nigeria a drunkard, Clueless, Jona.daft etc, to you this was just fine, but few days ago hypocritical you and passingshot already making a post about how bad it is for people to insult the office of the president.

Common bro, you don't have the moral right when all you did was use same propaganda to blackmail Jonathan, won't you be an hypocrite to cry now that your man is there?

On that thread seun proposed to ban people from insulting politicians, please check for my response to berem when she made her usual silly post about seun trying to defend Jonathan. Did it occur to you one day APC/Buhari will be in power and people will pay you back in your own coin?

Hey man, when pointing a finger, there more gallantly pointing back at you, please just enjoy this party.

karma is a bloody bi.tch.

Nonsense
You really do sound unintelligent.

Nive one Op.

Good job OP, i've stopped reading any news that has 'breakingtimes' as it source. Its sad that PDP is still using same cheap blackmail and propaganda that resulted to their defeat in the last election. It seems they've not learnt any lesson. I have equally noticed that a particular region takes delight in using all sorts of linguistic rubbishes just to buttress the 'untrue' news from breakingtimes. I support critism but it must be geniune and civil. I voted for Buhari, should he failed to meet my expectations after a year then he should brace himself up for real criticism. Those who voted him are the true critic! They found the past govt to be inadequate and sent them packing same fate await Buhari if... Majority of nigerians are now aware of their voting powers, no amout of blackmail can influence what they see of any govt.
