@kheme, i have a friend who is a professional footballer, he plays currently at Bayelsa utd but he is desperate to ply his trade abroad.
I am so passionate about this guy cos of his class as player, so i want to inquire if he could start his football career in Cyprus, he would eventually migrate im sure cos european clubs would be jostling for his signature.
Thanks.
Could one transfer credits from Nigerian universities to EMU? or GAU and continue? do they accept 9ja transcript?
I would like to have your facebk id
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by kheme(m): 2:50am On Aug 09, 2010
yes, one can transfer credit from anywhere to any school here, as long as you have a valid transcript and course descriptions, but usually only one transcript can be used for transfer.
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by opad(m): 5:58am On Aug 09, 2010
Yeah thanks for the info but yo didnt answer my first question about how viable football is over there, is it worth it starting a football career over there?
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by kheme(m): 6:09am On Aug 09, 2010
yes, it's possible. um, go to facebook and try to search for "Sola Latunji". He's got the contacts you need. When you contact him, tell him Kheme asked you to. Explain everything to him about the soccer and stuff, he'd tell you what to do or who to contact.

Hello Kheme,

I just had a few questions about your former school EUL. What is the best way to reach them, as I have tried calling over and over but they dont answer the phone; that concerns me though, cos what kind of uni does not answer their phones. Also how is the school in general; infrastructure, staff, environs? Is it better to live in the dorms or off campus? and are their postgraduate courses any good? and is upkeep very expensive over there?

Hope to hear from you. Thanks
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by kheme(m): 10:26pm On Aug 10, 2010
i dont know what number you've been calling, but no answer is not possible, so check the number that you're calling the right number. the school is ok. small place, like 3k students. its not the smallest school though in terms of infrastructure. environment is ok. staff are good, nice people. you might have problem with some non-academic staff that dont speak much english, but still the place is nice, best 4yrs of my life.

dorm is not bad. i miss dorm days. it was loads of fun back then, but things have changed somehow these days. maybe its the people. i don stay in the dorms anymore. dorm or off camp is your choice but its advicable to stay in the dorms at least 1 semester to see if you'd like it or not.

i dont know about the post graduate courses as i just applied myself. all i know is that masters classes is weekends and/or at nights. i know mba is weekends at nights, others is just nights or so, still no clear on that.

upkeep is up to you. i spend from 100lira to 250 lira a month, that's about 10k to 25k naira. some spend up to 500lira (50k). so its up to you. this includes water and electricity bills and feeding, etc.

in the dorms, water is free though not drinkable. u have to buy drinking water. electricity is free.

there are cafes in school with good food, same price like mr biggs and co in ngieria. theres now free internet for those in the dorms. all cafes in school have free interet as well.

@ Kheme, what is the weather like there?
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by fineboy5: 5:46pm On Aug 11, 2010
Kheme you are doing a help here.

is Cyprus a place for Immigrant. i mean can one get a job to leave for?

and again if yes, what type of visa is suitable for this. waiting for a favorable reply.

thanks.
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by kheme(m): 6:47pm On Aug 11, 2010
migrating here, fine if you're british. but for anyone else, its possible but i'm not sure what it entails. I'm looking at settling here. right now, my just is without security. unless the company that hires you really values you enough to get you work permit and resident permit, it might be difficult to settle here with a good job.
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by fineboy5: 8:29pm On Aug 11, 2010
i mean can one get a job without a documents or visa. also is it possible to migrate either by marriage or any other way, just like america and canada.
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by kheme(m): 9:23pm On Aug 11, 2010
yes, you can. as for migration, i dont know. perhaps i'm not the best person to ask about all this, and i dont know who you should ask.
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by fineboy5: 9:41am On Aug 12, 2010
kheme, thanks for the help you are doing here, and also the way you answered to all questions.

Finally, Last Questions.

1, What kind of jobs are open to Nigeria there? either skilled Labour or unskilled Labour.

2, cost of Apartment and leaving also freedoms of restrictions as a foreigners,

3. is Cyprus a documentation country?

4. Cost of visa and flight ticket from Nigeria to Cyprus.

And this will be of help to others.

Thanks for your help.
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by kheme(m): 4:01pm On Aug 12, 2010
u cant get an office job here without a degree, and its difficult for foreigners here to get office jobs, so to speak. it all depends on who you know. even with degree, their people are still complaining of no jobs.

as for unskilled, construction, farm, gardening, restaurant, etc. pay is good but work hours are long. there are no shifts like morning shift or night shift, there usually aren't shifts.

apartments range from $1000 to $5000 per head per year, depending on where and what it has. unlike nigeria, aparments, rooms, accommodations here all have stuff in them, beds, fridge, tv, washing machine, internet, etc. not all have everything. as i said, depends on what it has and where.

freedoms of restrictions not sure what you're talking about. i dont know how much "freedom" you expect as a foreigner in another man's land. some nigerians come here wanting to be treated above the people that live here, i dont know what kinda expectations that is, i mean, come on!!!

what is a "documentation country"

nigeria to cyprus is about $1000 and above. sometimes less. visa is cheap and easy to get once you have the right docs, admission letter, or invitation later or whatever. if you're thinking of coming to settle here for real, you'd need to make serious plans. not many people do so, unless you have a company ready to take care of all necessary documentation (like teachers in universities, or specialists in certain companies, etc. those ones, they will get your work permit and resident permit, etc)
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by fineboy5: 6:07pm On Aug 12, 2010
kheme thanks.

I have leave in Asia before. So what i am pointing out here is below.

Documentation country, when you are to change dollars either buying or selling as a foreigner you will need to provide your passport and visa. Buying of Sim card, lodging in an hotel, renting of apartment you also need a visa and they will not accept you in the hotel or house after visa expired, visa expired no Accommodation, when visa expired, you are opened to many troubles. browsing in a cyber cafe you also need a visa.

Freedom of restrictions, in some hotels, clubs, relaxation spot, community area or buildings, they do not accept black people or maybe foreigners, and there are some places you can go and cannot go as a black man. Also the police will stop black person for search maybe inside a cab or on the way sometimes day or at night and whereas they will do no such to their own people, questioning and interrogation demanding for your passport and visa if you do not have they will take you to the cell, it’s very embarrassing and disgusting.

you cannot carry/date or marry their girls. you cannot loud music in the house. and some other things in the community.

you are not allowed to open your own bussiness or invest in the country.

and the painful part, when your visa expired you cannot come back home. they will not want you and also will not allow you to go home. instead they will put you in prison for crime committed.

so here they are:

After visa expired in Cyprus what treats you are opened to.??

What are the minimum wages for an unskilled labour like a Nigerian with an expired visa can get? And can you go home any time you like with no visa?

Were Nigeria free to date and go out with any of their girls without any eyebrown??>  Are there any night clubs there to have fun?

can one allowed do bussiness or invest in the country as illigal immigrant,

Lastly what is the cost for flight from Nigeria to Cyprus?
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by kheme(m): 7:48pm On Aug 13, 2010
hahahahahahahahahah please let me laugh a while. mehn, that's prison na, what kinda restrictions are all those it's not like that here oh, its opposite of everything you've said. you only need your passport to do stuffs like bank, sim card, etc. house, no one cares so long as you're paying, same as work, so long as you're working, no one cares if your visa expires or not. here, there's not visa, just resident permit. and you still have no problems once its expired, as long as you're not leaving the country. if you 're leaving the country, you might have problems if ur permit is expired, and you'd need another visa to reutrn (normally oh). i dont know of any case where a persone was banned from returning here. flights is $1000+ (i said this before). there's no minimum wage here. average wage is like 15/20/25 to 40 lira a day, depending on where and what you do. some make up to 70 lira daily. if you have work permit, you can make up to 100, 200lira daily (building construction). based on your questions, north cyprus may not be the best place. i dont know about investing here, but i think there are rules for doing "business" here
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by fineboy5: 4:54pm On Aug 14, 2010
why do you say base on your question north cyprus is not the best place for you?

and are there niaja community in north cyprus?

atlest question is not too much for a travler, i am a travler with many experence you can ask me one day.
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by kheme(m): 5:38pm On Aug 14, 2010
cos i dont see many nigerians settled here. there are, but just a few. its not like uk. perhaps you should visit first then see things first hand.

I would like to know about getting things made in cyprus, looking into a little business while I am there, could you maybe advise me on how I would go about contacts, and the trip has accomodation included, I would not mind maybe renting an appartment for the 2 weeks instead, is this possible? yea. some people still think you need to "sort" someone or "block" somewhere. imagine someone paying up to 250k for visa to north cyprus. in my time, visa application fee was 2,600 naira if i remember correctly!

as eghost247 has said, contact the school, especially the international office, they will guide you through every step from application until you land the island. they are always very helpful, doesn't matter the school.

its best you communicate with them, cos that way, there would be no middle man and you'd get first hand information.

here are the websites:

Near East University: www.neu.edu.tr
Eastern Mediterranean University: www.emu.edu.tr
European University of lefke: www.eul.edu.tr (did B.Sc. here. now doing masters here too)
Cyprus International University: www.ciu.edu.tr
Middle East Technical University (Cyprus Campus): www.metu.edu.tr
Girne American University: www.gau.edu.tr

my recommendations, if you have money, go to EMU or METU. if you don't have money like that, go to EUL. the schools i know that are GOOD are EMU, METU and EUL. the others, i don't know much. NEU is good too.

anything else
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by J20limited: 12:49am On Oct 05, 2010
After reading every post on this forum from the beginning i think i should drop a line here. The guys that began this forum were talking about CYPRUS meaning republic of Cyprus. The would be moderator Kheme has done a wonderful job by giving you all honest descriptions of the true of situation North Cyprus which i will advice every reader to listen to. Unfortunately Kheme you forgot along the line to draw a fine line between the Republic of Cyprus and North Cyprus.

For those of you who seek European education or just want to leave Nigeria for Europe sorry to tell you that North Cyprus which kheme has describe perfectly well is NOT Europe. Cyprus is a greek island and was created oct 1st 1960 just like Nigeria and but invaded by turkey in 1983. In 1983 Turkish Cypriots proclaimed the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which is recognised only by Turkey. Cyprus is a partial shengien and a full member of the EU with its official currency is EURO not Lira. This is my 3rd year work and study in the greek european cyprus and experiences are quite different but i've been to the north cyprus numerous times. This is your normal European city with all privileges, opportunities etc if you soji yourself and possibly full shengien membership this febuary.

Havin said that Education on the north side is much cheaper but thats a much as you get. It’s recognition is not strong because its not actually a country and not european. Education here is not as cheap as the north cyprus but not as expensive as UK, US etc. Kheme also excluded the fact that over 20 student annually pay good money to cross from the north cyprus to republic of cyprus in search of better jobs etc. He also omitted the fact that with a visa to cyprus you can go to the northside as many times a day as you wish but from the north side its impossible for even turkish how much more foreigner. 250k for a visa to north cyprus after your fees et al? I’m not sure wat the rate for Cyprus visa is now but i’m 100% sure it not up to that amount by far less than 100k. Their embassy is at leventis building iddo house beside coca cola at oyingbo.

The cost of living here is much higher but so is the income. Many students work to support their parents. The minimum wage is 4euro/hr s on a standard 8hrs shift you earn 30-50euro a day depending on the job. However Europe means european laws apply and students are allowed only 20hrs of work when skool is in session. Similar to the north cyprus, this place is good if you have someone to at least pay your school fees and you hustle the rest. Surviving here is simple if you are strong and big you’ll get bouncer / security jobs, construction jobs. If you an entertainer, dj, singer you’ll get the clubs work and bar job. Did i hear you say white collar jobs?? FORGET IT!! Best you can get is cyprus companies like leventis, coca cola, flourmill nigeria, pwc, delloite who can employ you from here to work in nigeria after your degree. Open days are held annually in most universities and i have two friends working good jobs in nigera now via this means.

Summary if you have the means go to Republic of Cyprus DO NOT go to north cyprus, I personal know over 50 nigerian cross over refugees many of whom where students that bandoned their fees to cross over from the north side.
Information on good skools, procedure etc will follow
Re: Nigerians Living In Cyprus by Chinois: 3:57am On Oct 05, 2010
@J20limited,

Thank you very much for that write up. I have been very concerned about the recognition for the TRNC degrees considering they are from a country that is not recognized. Would you happen to know if people have generally had problems owing to the recognition (or lack thereof) of the degrees?

Thanks.
