Leading political activist and preacher, Pastor Tunde Bakare has turned down an offer by President Muhammadu Buhari to be his Chief of Staff, Nigerian Times can authoritatively report.

Nigerian Times exclusively gathered that the pastor, who was President Buhari’s running mate in the 2011 presidential election which they lost, rejected the offer because of the belief that his inability to speak the Hausa language would impede his performance at the job.

Our highly placed source at the presidential Villa, who pleaded anonymity because he was not permitted to disclose such sensitive information, stated that Pastor Bakare insisted he would not take the job because of the penchant of Buhari and his closest associates to revert to the Hausa Language when discussing important national issues even in the presence of non-speakers of the language.

Our source said Buhari was surprised by the response from Bakare and was unable to convince him to take the job. Though both men have not fallen out because of Bakare’s refusal to take up the offer, “the pastor thinks that the president’s inner circle may be insular but Bakare and the President still speak from time to time,” said the source.

Buhari chose Bakare as his running mate in the 2011 presidential election and both men campaigned vigorously across the country on the platform of the now defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). They lost the election to the PDP candidates of President Goodluck Jonathan and Namadi Sambo who served as his vice.

Several critics have hit the Buhari government hard for what they regard as the slow pace of governance. Over one month after he took over the reins of government and two months after winning the Presidential election, the President has failed to form a cabinet and employ key staff. This has reportedly slowed down the process of governance and many analysts now wonder if the President was ready for primetime leadership.

Although the 7th Senate led by Senator David Mark approved 15 Special Advisers for President Buhari, he is yet to name anyone or assign key portfolios.

President Buhari has however explained that his slowness to form a cabinet was deliberate and was because he wanted to study the report of his transition committee which was chaired by Ahmed Joda, a former Permanent Secretary.

“I don’t know why people are so anxious about ministers. But eventually we will have (them). But the main reason is that I have an interim committee which I agreed with the former President Jonathan that the ministers of the outgoing government should hand over their notes or their documents to this interim committee so that a position can be prepared for the new government to start from with clear records from ministers,” Buhari said.

The committee’s report was submitted about three weeks back.
