Wish u had carried out a proper research before writing dis...well, I will pardon your ignorance, and will also forgive you for putting down my field of study on that malnourished list of yours. For the records, Estate management isn't just about the usual local estates you have in your area, there's more to it, ever heard of valuation? Agency? What about property management? Facilities ko??well it's the work of an Estate manager, to do all that, even sales too, so dearie, leave the ville, travel a little, you'll understand the importance of those courses you've listed out...Thank You!

If the federal government are not doing anything by now to scrap this courses from our universities, then it means our economic liberation as a nation is still far-fetched. This courses should be replaced with the courses below. Not as a vocational program now, but as a degree program. Nigerians don’t like to identify with anything vocational, they love to go for ‘NYSC’.
• Software Development
• Welding and Fabrication
• Fashion Designing
• Concrete Finishing (Plastering, Screading, Painting, Tiles)
• Interior designing and Decoration
• Security Systems Technology
• Wood Finishing
• Road Construction Tech
• Leather Extraction and Finishing
• Cinematography and Movie making
• Advanced Programming
• Furniture making
• Solar Engineering
• Automation Engineering
• Hospitality Management
• Waste Management and Recycling Tech
• Web Development and Management
• Graphics, Branding and Industrial Printing
• Plant technology and Herbal sciences
• Content development and Research

If we can embrace this, unemployment will be reduced drastically.

Op u are wrong. Have u forgoten that some of the courses u mentioned are primarily aimed at empowering the students by equipping them with entrepreneurial abilities. For example marketing which is the live wire of every business, the knowledge of it helps ur business grow and compete along. show me a company with no or weak marketing strategy and i will show company which is bound to fail.

No wonder Nigerians are majorly fools.
Philosophy was once the only subject that was as medicine, law, economics, sociology and the rest was studied under it. Do you stop for a second to imagine why there is philosophy of almost anything?

Buffoons.

Why?
we are not a western economy. we need practical solutions to practical problems. the whole world does not use nigeria as a financial institution like they do zurich and london and new york etc etc in which case there is the need for many pen-pushers. we are a blue collar country with a blue collar economy and the courses in the university do not reflect that which is why many people are unemployed. 99 percent of courses in nigeria need to be scrapped. we need a re-orientation back to blue-collar degrees like road building, road tarring, welding, building, manufacturing, etc etc

I agree with almost all bt not a course like Library Science....... Lib Sci is a professional course... Do u thing all the numbers like ISBN and SBN Appendix... Even the classification of books in a library and online library would not have been done perfectly......... ANy way meet a professional writter or a publisher that's when u will know much ab library science..

We do not need to scrap existing ones to introduce new ones.
People should have a wide variety of choices.

And yes, we already have blue colar degrees like building, civil engineering, construction enginerring, botany, agriculture, fishery, food science, animal husbandry etc.

The problem is Nigerians are more attracted to white colar jobs. What we need is re-orientation not scrapping some courses.

Everyone is not going to study agriculture.

well truth be told most of those courses are a waste of time. you cannot do anything with it. 99 percent of degree holders in nigeria do not work in their field of study. what does that tell you ? they all need to be scrapped.

KoloOyinbo:

You ask which public and which estate? So you want to ban a course you know nothing about!
You want to ban academic courses offered in Universities the WORLD over such as International Relations (read here on Nairaland how most posters have no idea how governments or the world works to be convinced of the value of this course).
You reject the sciences?
And what do we replace them with?
Concrete Finishing (Plastering, Screading, Painting, Tiles)?? NO University anywhere in the world does this. It may be in some technical college or even better as an apprenticeship with on the job training. Naija would be the laughing stock of the world if it did this (not that anyone could be so stupid as to really do it).

Ah, but you are exaggerating to illustrate a point!

Just remember that many here read these silly examples and take them literally!

If these courses were so useless why has the developed world been offering them in its Universities for centuries.

If you follow a PROPER educational system with appropriate mix of academic and non academic courses in Universities and Technical colleges etc you WILL progress.
To say the fact, d op is an illiterate. He is so shallow and naive in thinking.

Haba bros. Why not simply advise the introduction or inclusion of the new courses you want rather than scrap whole disciplines?
Re: Opinion: These 20 Courses Should Be Scraped From Our Universities by Nobody: 12:48pm On Jul 19, 2015
In other words, they should scrap;
Elect Elect- its easy to practice. Just by joining wires
Comp Sc- we are in a digital age. Who doesn't know computer
Fishery - we all eat fishes.
Physics- the one we did in second sch is ok
Law- everybody claims to be above the law,no need for the course.
Medicine- we all prescribe our drugs by ourselves over the counter. We even suggest to doctors the kind of treatment we want.
Mechanical Engr.- its hard to see an educated mechanic with a degree these days.
Accounting- u can't cheat an average Nigerian man when it comes to monetary figures. No need to waste years in sch.

After all, we spend years in school only to get back to spend years at home.

They do not work in their field because of corruption and unemployment.

There are civil engineers working in the bank.

I personally know an agricultural science graduate working in glo telecoms company.

Scrapping some courses won't really solve anything. Its sounds absurd to me.

Merging some courses is better - like international relations, history and diplomacy.
Public administration + political science.
Mass commuincation+ journalism
English + linguists.
Literature+ dramatic arts
Etc.

By the way what course did you study. Sorry to say this, you are reasoning like a full educated illiterate having more than 100 illiterate likes to support your ignorant writ. Most of this courses are foundational courses needed especially in developing countries like Nigeria but unfortunately, only western advance nations appreciates it. Now just imgaine you naming social work. The issues of drug addicts, deranged people, boko haram victims, flood victims, mental home etc, who really come into play, ZOOLOGY: this is a basic premed course before medicine. Sea ocean researchers, parasitologists, animal experiment before human study, fishery, hydro biology, toxicology are all under zoology. Zoologist is never than man that works in the zoo as you may think. GEJ Your man? LINGUISTIC AND INTERNATIONAL STUDY: both enhances peace and international relationships. Come down to our local setting: studying and preserving culture etc. ARCHEOLOGY: thats while we remained under the whites to unearth everything under our bed room to tell us the story of our civilisation. We remain in the dark on how we fore fathers fell from the sky bla bla bla. ESTATE MANAGEMENT: Whaoo, i am shocked at your ignorance. I think thats the reason why the igbos think that Nigeria is a zoo. Go to cele ijesha and through the scores of streets and you will realise the value of estate management. This is what makes great cities of paris, dubai etc thick. BOTANY: do you really hate beauty and nature, mycology, herbal medicines, pharmaco courses etc, i want to stop here.
