Nigerian democracy is over 16 years old at the moment. However, it is saddening to note that we still grapple with the problems of political instability, poor infrastructural development, poor educational institution, epileptic power supply, and a viable corruption cankerworm that has eaten deep into the fabrics of our National system—just to mention but a few.

It is true that there was also widespread corruption between 1999 and 2007 when Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo (retd) held sway as Nigeria’s president. However, at least there were functioning anti-graft agencies such as ICPC and EFCC running after corrupt government officials. Although it was rumored in some quarters that, the then President used the anti-graft to chase his anti-third term bid opponents. Whether or not the public officials arrested under Obasanjo were actually guilty is actually a topic for another day.

It is a shame indeed! If there is anything to weep for, it is the ineptitude in leadership. Unfortunately, Nigeria is not alone in the cobweb of corruption. Ineptitude leadership cuts across all the various African countries. However, ours seems to be more loudly announced, probably because “all eyes are on the giant of Africa”. Various Nigeria Newspapers online and offline showed it!

The last democratic dispensation under former President Goodluck Jonathan did a lot to put the country back on the list of the most corrupt nations in the world. Through various actions and inactions, Nigeria was once again an epitome of “how has the mighty fallen.”

Judging by his soft smile and mien, Jonathan was a good man who wouldn’t trouble still waters. However, some of his calm nature left too much to be desired of a sitting president. In the period when stealing was not corruption, billions of Naira suddenly developed wings and flew out of our treasury, Nigeria was caught up in arms scandal deal, Boko Haram blossomed, to mention a few. Nigeria lost her respect in the comity of nations!

Nevertheless, Jonathan’s kind act of “submission to the will of Nigerians” should be thanked for not calling for war when he lost to his main contender, Muhammadu Bhari, in the last 2015 election.

Now that we have chosen a new President who seems more passionate about Nigeria and Nigerians, we still have more work on our hands. If Nigeria is to move away from the dark past and forge ahead into the bright future where brilliant opportunities abound, then all hands must be on deck to make sure we not only choose leaders, but also make them very accountable.

There should be revolution in our way of life. Corruption should no longer be a usual phenomenon; no it must be seen by all as evil and condemned in all quarters.

People should raise an eye brow and ask pertinent questions when there is an attempt to squander our collective wealth. We must make our leaders accountable to us because they are there to represent us, and as such the constitution makes them answerable to us. Leadership should be seen as a means to serve the people, not a personal effort to accumulate wealth.

Finally, we as Nigerians are the best people to move this country forward, not the United States or any other country for that matter. The fight against corruption must begin from within us. Do not give or take bribe—both the giver and taker are guilty under the law. If we find a true leader in any stratum of governance, be it at local, state or federal level, we should rally round and give him the maximum support. Where a leader strays from the path of accountable, people-oriented governance, the electorates have a right to call such leader to order without fear. Freedom of speech is part of true tenets of democracy. Let's use it wisely. God bless Nigeria!

For these anticurruption agencies to work, they need to be independent. But in Nigeria, that can never and I repeat never be possible.

Therefore, if we really trust the present president enough, instead of him heading NNPC, ICPC and EFCC should be combined and headed by the president.

WE must start with ourselves. Leave the politicians alone, start with our personal lives. you who jump queues in banks and give the cashier bribe to attend to you, you who bribe admission officers to gain admission or give your wards admission, you who used money to influence your NYSC posting, you who refuse to give your parent's change to them when sent on an errand.... You know the rest. That's the root of Nigeria's problem of corruption.

PDP and APC aren't the problem.

I'll give you 000.05 out of 10 marks
1.My solution to corruption is the implementation of the CONfab reports fully and returning to regionalism.
2.We should change from Bi-camera legislature to uni-camera with 7 senator for each region.
3.Only people between age 28-60 should be allowed to hold public offices and contest for public posts.
4.We should introduce a protocol where the president is allow to choose equally from all the six regions.
5.We should decentralised our security agencies air force,Navy,SSS and Police force except Army and DSS for the central.. So each region(not states) will trained and tailored them... They will only be coming together through Drills(air force,Navy) this is to prevent coup.. And they must not use them to attack any other region or use it to threaten any region of the federation. And our anti-corruption agencies should be independent and can also arrest and interrogates public office holder while in and out of office.
6. Each region should be allow to have its own foreign Policy and form its own world ally.
7.Finally we should turn to single term govt of 6years with mid-term election.

The case of Nigeria is a lost battle my brother, corruption is as old as the polity itself.

How do you want to fight corruption when power have remained with these old cabals for decades.... We need a new face of leadership

How do you want to fight corruption when corrupt people brought you to power....it's called biting the finger that fed you.

How do you want to fight corruption when too much power and money is concentrated at the Centre.....

How do u fight corruption when religious and tribal bigotry is the order of the day...

My brother NIGERIA IS A SCAM

Is Buhari himself not corrupt? The BORN TO RULE FULANI mentality itself is the foundation of corruption.

The UNITARY SYSTEM we run instead of a Federal system benefiting certain section of the country is corruption.

Fraudulent population censors is a corruption. More local government in Kano state than Lagos is corruption.

Leaving young intelligent leaders to put in a grandfather in place through a dubious primaries sponsored by the governors who bleed their state dry and mortgaged the future of those states with loans that cannot be repaid in 20 Years is corruption.

The only reason the PROPAGANDIST used corruption noise and insecurity to force GEJ out is simply to return power back to the North.

We will start to fight corruption when we are ready to start telling the truth.

Corruption has to be fought from the top. It would need a president who has the will and the balls to tackle that disease head on. Corruption would always be widespread if there is little or no consequences when caught. Should the same penalty or life in prison with hard labour be introduced and enforced...nothing will change. All mouth and no balls can change nothing. ...actions speak louder than words.

Now that we have chosen a new President who seems more passionate about Nigeria and Nigerians

The above is totally wrong!. Jonathan is one of the most passionate president we've gotten in Nigeria. He so much love Nigeria that despite the hate, he did more to northern Nigeria than south. A man that sacrificed his presidential seat for the interest of peace!.

Think about it.

Buhari lost elections 3 times, and all the time he called for war. He further said "they will make the country ungovernable" for GEJ. And that was the origin of boko haram.

There is nothing that can be done about and against corruption. It is a structural problem. We can already see that the current war has failed, loaded down with sentiment because it is sectional, non universal and non equitable. Once you ask the lady to remove her blindfolds and you begin to load the scales the whole system falls apart. My two cents is that Buhari will eventually throw in the towel and blame 'the system'. And he will be absolutely right. The problem is he should be fixing the system first.

NB. The white flag was officially raised when PMB raised a unilateral statute of limitation and shot himself in the foot.

Most biased rubbish I've ever read, most of the article was drafted to attack GEJ without addressing the main topic squarely.

Next time dedicate fewer lines to attacking opponents and more on the topic.at hand.

Why shouldn't the OP attack Goodluck, if that's what he's actually doing? Wasn't Goodluck part of the problem of corruption?
