@Exoticstan you've said it all. Let me add from experience. Since Upwork had long Upgraded their ways of ranking freelancers on JSS (Job Success Score) Rising Talent Badge and the almighty TOP RATED STATUS, newbies has been finding it difficult to get jobs. "I'll let one secret out". If you'd just open a new profile and within two weeks of bidding, you have not been awarded a RISING TALENT BADGE. My friend just know that your Upwork hustle will be as long as River Nile.

SO my advice for newbies:

1.Tailor your profile to focus on a service line, If you're into Academic writing let it be all about Academics (you can garnish related skills with it, but let it be at that).

2. Don't even bother, plying you trade on Upwork as a Entry Level freelancer (you'll be frustrated), so if you don't have the intermediate or expert skills just be patient to upgrade your skills further.

3. For RISING TALENT BADGE. I've discovered that after you've opened an Upwork profile, Upwork goes further to look at your service description, relevant qualifications and class. If your profile has got the bite, your proposal write-ups/composition would be observed for some period, should it be on point consistently, a rising talent should be smiling right on your profile within 1-2 weeks of account opening (this is just my observation, perhaps not objective).

With a good start biding on a Rising Talent Badge, you get to compete with veterans in your niche unlike placing a bid as just an ordinary Upworker. So aim for a Rising Talent Badge.
Very insightful.

I've seen your profile Kalu and it's quite cool. But you need to use capital letters efficiently. You obviously overused them, even in places where only initial caps would have sufficed.
Instead of this "Data Entry and web research specialist for your needs", you may simply type "Data Entry Specialist". Regarding the certifications; you may need to include stuffs (even if it means making them up) that have Global appeal. AN international certificate of participation commands more credibility than a certificate from Aba. You get the drill? This is only if you are comfortable with it.

For several weeks, I have been following your thread. I find the pieces of advice -- on operating an Upwork account -- from you and other contributors on this thread very beneficial.

I have been into the freelance writing business for a fairly long time, have accounts on Freelancer and Fiverr. To get repeat buyers on these two platforms have been difficult.

So I opened an account on Upwork on Sept. 5, created my profile following your recommendation(s) and have been submitting proposals for projects using the info from this thread. However, owing to some projects I am working on for clients on the other two websites, I couldn't devote full attention to my account on Upwork. I only bade for projects once in a while.

After submitting 8 proposals for projects on Upwork, I finally got awarded my first contract on the site. It is a press release job and is more or less a try-out; the client wanted to test my writing skills with this task.

Please I need information on the following from you and other contributors here;
1. Is it possible to generate a substantial income ($300-$400) per month by writing press releases, product descriptions and related articles?
2. Is operating on Upwork as a Nigerian writer (no skills and experience about academic writing) a reliable source of income?
3. I got awarded my first job three weeks after opening an account on Upwork; how will this affect my chances of getting the Rising Talent badge?

Thank you.

I am still a very young freelancer on upwork with 3 completed projects (1st had a rating of 4.25, second had 5.0 third had 4.8 ). I am yet to get a job success score on my profile. With this antecedents, do you think I can make a JSS of at least 90? Can you also bear in your thoughts on how good/bad I am doing so far?
Also what can I do to ensure that I always that I get 5.0 rating ALWAYS. The 3 projects I have done I have really put in my all and clients always seem to be satisfied. But on seeing the rating, they seem to not want to give away that much important 5.0 feedback even after telling them that they should please give 5 as I am trying to build a credible profile.

Gurus please bear in your thoughts.
Thanks

Most times it helps to ask for a 5 star review. I'd say you should give your all (as you are reportedly doing), up your game and ASK for it POLITELY.

I don't think you're doing badly at the moment. Just keep up the good work. You should be able to bid on most jobs, so long you keep your overall rating at a minimum of 4.5.

As for the JSS, I'd say you are on the right track. I think it is determined based on the percentage of jobs awarded that you've completed successfully.

Note that not all clients would give 5.0 rating; some just appear to find it difficult to do, even when their comments on the job may be good.

By custom order, I guess you mean " a fixed Price project"? On Upwork is call FIXED PRICE, so yes is possible. You can discuss with the client to make a project a fixed price amount and agree on term of work together.

there is a client who wanted me to create a list for him. initially we didn't know how long the list would be so he decided to create a hourly sort of job.
I've completed job. but I don't want hourly payment. how do I go about it to make it a fixed Price project?

Yes bro you are right

These are my rating for my first five job

5.0
5.0
4.8
5.0
4.6

And then i got 1 job canceled because the author changed his mind

My lowest rating has been 4.6

I still have a 100% success score.

Tips,

1. No apply for job whe you no fit do... There's no simpler way to say this. If you are doing something you are not sure of, abeg let the author know, some will support you. This is to avoid stories that touch.

2. Learn how to ask for a review politely. I have reviews from all my clients, even the ones that rarely give reviews.

Even If just 2 words and 5 stars, it helps.

Master the art of timing. Ask at the right time, politely, and highlight the value you added, POLITELY!

3. Only accept a job at a price you are okay with. So you won't do the job grudgingly.

4. Over deliver

5...

So I thought I might say this.
I started on upwork some few weeks ago, got my first job worth 25 dollars to review an audio book. I was excited like madt when I received my naira equivalent after transacting with an amazing lady on NL.
Two weeks later which is right now, I have in queue, jobs worth 500 dollars and I am anticipating more.
Dunno if it's luck (it's definitely not hard work cos I haven't tried hard enough) but I know that you are sure to make money on upwork especially if you are creative when applying for these jobs.
I know if I really settle down and get organised, I might be earning more than a thousand dollars monthly.
Bottom line is that there is much money to be made online.
Stop procrastinating or waiting for the perfect time and jump right at it.
Cheers!

onesty still pays guys,I have a testimony of a contract I did on Upwork.
I discovered Upwork like any hustler, and decided to try my luck. At first it was not easy
getting jobs, so as a naija guy. I created four accounts, 3 as naija and 1 as Australian.
I got two jobs in a period of two weeks; 1 on my real account that did not pay well, and another one
on my Australian account. I had issues with the tax information when I added my payoneer account, but
continued the job, I used the upwork app to record my hours; however, I always finished my goal
for the day before the alotted time.
Anyway, I decided to close all my fake accounts, and focus on the real one. Unknown to me that the money was
deducted from my client because he registered his card, and I used the upwork app. I thought, I lost the money which was
$133, I told him the truth. He liked my work so he migrated to my new account. I told him to try and get the money back,
and today I got a payment of $107 from upwork. Half bread is better than none.

I have not even shown you my account snapshot from all my freelance accounts. If I open my Payoneer transaction PDF document from the last 6 years, people will faint here. That is why when Elance was coming to Nigeria for a seminar in Lagos four years ago, I was given a specal invitation to come for that event.

Those who think I will sell an ebook on this are joking. It will not happen. All I will advice you is this: forget about opening any freelance accounts. First things first. Go and acquire a skill and move up the freelance food chain.

Their people sometimes pose as employers looking for those who will fall foul of the law. Never attempt to accept being paid outside Upwork if the employer suggests it. It is always a trap.
