Lagos Govt Face Criticism Over Plan To Sponsor Kogi Poll

The coalition for civil society and well-meaning people of Lagos state have condemned the forceful call on the 20 local government council areas in the state to contribute N50 million each to fund Prince Audu Abubakar in the Kogi state November 21 governorship election

Sequel to the over bearing burden placed on the local councils, the groups at various press conferences held in Lagos did not hesitate to flaw the call for the contribution to support an election which it said does not have any connection to Lagos state.

This was in line with the reluctance by the 23 governors of the All Progressive Congress to contribute N100 million each to support the party candidate in the forthcoming poll in the Kogi.

According to Daily Post, the decision to forcefully task the twenty local government areas to contribute the sum of N1 billion came under attack at separate press conferences addressed by Tunde Babarinsa, the chairman of coalition of civil societies in Lagos state and Alabi Oyewole who happened to be the Representatives of well-meaning Lagosians.

During a recent governors’ forum in Abuja, the 23 APC governors had sternly frowned at the mandatory contribution which they described as “unhealthy” on the basis that they on their parts have several financial burdens to shoulder in their various states

They vehemently refused the call to contribute the compulsory N100 million each to fund the Kogi governorship poll to support Audu Abubakar, a two time governor of the state.

The governors also faulted the order in this period of dwindled allocations when they are unable to meet their obligations to workers in their states.

However, it was reported that one of the governors said that the mandatory N100 million would go a long way in assisting them meet some important responsibilities in their respective states rather than contributing to a state election where the candidate is alleged to be unpopular and was reluctant to issues of the party until he became a flag bearer.

Not minding the refusal by other state APC governors to embark on the contribution, Lagos state government is said to be bent on the realizing it as the contribution according to Babarinsa is on and to be completed before October 31.

The group called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and other anti-graft agencies to beam their searchlight on the finances of Lagos state, with the view of protecting the people’s commonwealth.

Meanwhile, a Kogi central senatorial district group has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to reconsider James Ocholi, a ministerial nominee from the state.

The group in an open letter signed by R. Abdulmaleeq said: “While it is within your constitutional powers to choose and nominate any candidate of your choice from any part of a state, it is pertinent for the sake of EQUITY, FAIRNESS, and the fragile power equation in Kogi state, to reconsider your nomination from Kogi state.”
