Aregbesola commissions N750m school, names it after Soyinka

The first in the series of mega-schools built by the Rauf Aregbesola administration in Osun state has been formally opened in Ejigbo and fittingly christened in honour of Nigeria’s Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka.
The school, which cost N750million, is a 3,000-capacity complex with 72 classrooms of 49 square-metre, each capable of sitting 49 pupils. It has six offices for study groups. It will be known as Wole Soyinka Government High School, Ejigbo.
It is equipped with six laboratories, 18 toilets for girls and 18 for boys, one science library, one arts library, facility manager’s office, a bookshop and a sick bay.
Soyinka praised Aregbesola, saying he was elated that such honour was bestowed on him. He pledged to visit the school often to see how it was faring.
He also said the school was an an “emphatic rejection of what Boko Haram insurgents preach”.
He described the Federal Government’s failure to rescue the missing Chibok girls as shameful.
“It is a shame that the nation cannot account for over 200 girls in Chibok. I sympathise with the religious policy of governments in school; children must not be brought up feeling that religion inhibits knowledge.
“In schools, we need not distinguish our children, the fatalistic religious holiness and the holier-than-thou attitude must be reduced among our pupils.”
Aregbesola said although the cost of the school was huge, he noted that it was a worthy investment.
The governor promised that more of the schools would be inaugurated next year.
“We can build a good road that will last for 50 years and we are doing that, but this can never compare to the enlightenment an educated person receives, in terms of its value to the society and humanity.
“The state of education prior to our coming was appalling and frighteningly so. Zoos were better than the places where pupils were receiving knowledge. Many of them were dilapidated and falling down.’

Ondo State Govt Partner With Korean Firm To Boost Power Supply
The Ondo State Government has reached a contractual agreement for the construction of a 1050 megawatt (mw) independent power project (IPP) with a South Korea firm, POSCO E&C.

The agreement for an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the first phase of the state’s proposed 1050mw IPP was recently sealed through partnership with the firm’s Nigerian subsidiary, Kingline Development Company.

The first phase of the project involves the construction of a gas-fired power plant for the generation of 550mw which would be sold into the national grid while the second phase of the project is expected to add another 500mw to the grid network.

The agreement requires the firm to see to the design, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and testing of the 550mw open cycle gas turbine power plant to be located in Ondo State.

The firm stated that the actual construction is expected to commence in the first quarter 2016 and is expected to take about 26 months from commencement and date of issuing the notice to proceed (NTP) for the construction to be completed.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the head of Kingline Development in Nigeria, Akinnola Fola, informed that funding had been secured for the project, adding that the EPC contract was recently signed at POSCO E&C’s headquarters in Seoul, South Korea.

Giving more insights into the project, Fola explained that a Certificate of Occupancy (CofO) has already been issued for the project by the Ondo State Government even as an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) panel review has been done.

Truthpallbearer:
“Mathematical” Enoch Opeyemi and the
Making of Another Nigerian Intellectual
419er
By Farooq A. Kperogi, Ph.D.
Twitter: @farooqkperogi
The moment I read about Dr. Enoch Opeyemi's claim to
have solved the 156-year-old Riemann Hypothesis in
the Vanguard of November 15, 2015, I didn't need to
read a second opinion to know it was suspect at best
and fraudulent at worst.
You don’t need to think too deeply to realize that Dr.
Opeyemi is one heck of a hilariously delusional
intellectual scammer in the mold of Philip Emeagwali
and Gabriel Oyibo. The second to the last paragraph in
the Vanguard story that announced Opeyemi’s
“mathematical genius” was what did it for me. “Dr
Enoch had previously… discovered a scientific
technique for detecting and tracking someone on an
evil mission,” the report said. Seriously? How do you
scientifically detect and track someone on an “evil
mission”? What is an “evil mission,” and what has
science got to do with that? No one with this kind of
prescientific, atavistic mindset can be trusted to have
the cognitive capacity to solve an age-old
mathematical puzzle like the Riemann Hypothesis.
Now, Opeyemi’s only evidence for claiming to have
solved the Riemann Hypothesis was that he presented a
paper on the puzzle at the International Conference on
Mathematics and Computer Science in Vienna, Austria.
Well, it has turned out that the conference itself may be
a borderline scam operation. An August 20, 2011 blog
post titled “Fake Paper Accepted by Nina Ringo's
Vienna Conference” revealed that a scientist by the
name of Mohammad Homayoun who was suspicious of
the genuineness of the International Conference on
Mathematics and Computer Science (ICMC) decided to
test his suspicion by submitting a fake, worthless,
nonsensical paper to the conference to see if it would
be accepted or rejected.
The researcher’s hunch was accurate: the ICMC in
Vienna appears to be an elaborate, money-making
scholarly scam. His paper was accepted even though it
was intentionally nonsensical. “The conference claims
that submissions/papers are reviewed/refereed BUT
they are not,” the researcher wrote. “A fake paper was
submitted for evaluation to intercomp2011@
gmail.com on Sun, Jan 2, 2011. The notification of
acceptance was received on Sun, Jan 9, 2011.” That’s
just one week of “peer review.”
But even if the conference were genuine, and it could
very well be, you can't prove something as momentous
as a 156-year-old mathematical problem with a mere
conference presentation. In the rituals
of knowledge production in academe, for any claim to
be taken seriously, it has to be published in a well-
regarded, peer-reviewed outlet, such as a journal. This
is elementary knowledge.
In fact, a spokesperson for the US-based Clay
Mathematics Institute (CMI), which offers a $1 million
reward for anyone who can solve the Reimann
Hypothesis, told CNN that any claim to have proved
the hypothesis “would need to be published in a
journal ‘of worldwide repute’ and accepted for two
years within the mathematics community before it
would be considered.”
Opeyemi merely orally presented what he claims is his
proof of the hypothesis at a conference on November
11. As of the time of writing this column, there is no
written record of the paper Opeyemi presented at the
conference, much less its publication in a journal. He
told CNN’s Thomas Page that his proof of the
hypothesis is “due for publication by a journal
attached to the Vienna conference on December 1.” So
why claim to have solved a problem when you haven’t
even gone through the basic protocols of scientific
verification? Even if Opeyemi has indeed proved the
hypothesis, it would take two years to earn the
recognition and the reward. Why is he jumping the
gun?
But, most importantly, Opeyemi actually stands no
chance of even being able to prove the hypothesis
because none of the journals published by the
International Conference on Mathematics and
Computer Science is of “worldwide repute.” The
conference’s flagship journal, called the International
Scientific Journal, isn’t even listed, much less ranked,
in Scientific Journal Rankings (SJR), the most
prestigious database that measures the scientific impact
and prestige of journals in the hard sciences.
My sense is that Dr. Opeyemi genuinely fancies
himself as having solved this mathematical puzzle, and
his self-construal of his intellectual machismo got a
boost when his paper got accepted for presentation at a
conference in Vienna, Austria. In the now rampant
xenophilic academic culture in Nigeria that
uncritically valorizes the foreign, for one's paper to be
accepted at an "international" (read: white) academic
conference is seen as an endorsement of one's peerless
scholarly prowess. Never mind that many of these
“international” conferences and journals are actually
fraudulent.
When naive xenophilia seamlessly commingles with
the kind of mortifyingly cringe-worthy credulity that
pervades the Nigerian media landscape AND the
progressive dearth and death of basic fact-checking in
even international media outlets like the BBC, you end
up with embarrassing stories like this.
This is not the first time this has happened. In July
2011, another Nigerian academic by the name of
Michael Atovigba claimed to have solved
the same Riemann Hypothesis. The ever so gullible
Nigerian media believed and celebrated him. The
reason Atovigba convinced himself that he had solved
the mathematical puzzle that Opeyemi now also claims
to have solved was that his paper (which has only
seven references, four of which are from Wikipedia!)
was found “worthy” of publication in an
"international" journal, which turned out to be a
notoriously worthless, predatory, bait-and-switch
Pakistan-based journal that masquerades as a UK
journal.
I wrote a widely circulated article on August 13, 2011
titled “Bait-and-Switch Publishing: New Face of
Academic Fraud” that exposed this fraud. Among other
things, I wrote: "Mr. Atovigba’s claims to unparalleled
mathematical genius might very well be true, but we
have no way of knowing this for certain because he
chose to publish his 'record-breaking' findings in the
'Research Journal of Mathematics and Statistics' owned
by a bait-and-switch publishing company called
Maxwell Scientific Organization."
Atovigba told the (Nigerian) Guardian that he would
get his $1 million reward from the Clay Mathematics
Institute now that he had published his “proof” in a
“reputable international journal.” Four years after,
another deluded Nigerian “scientist” claims to have
proved the same hypothesis for which Atovigba is still
expecting his $1 million, and the media’s legendary
amnesia ensures that these clowns continue to expose
Nigeria and Nigerians to international ridicule.
Incredible!
What is even more incredible is that a Nigerian BBC
correspondent’s story on Opeyemi, inspired by
Vanguard’s initial reporting (which was itself
instigated by Opeyemi himself), has caused the British
media to perpetrate Opeyemi’s misrepresentation. Now,
the British media’s uncritical echoing of Opeyemi’s
initial lie is invoked as evidence to lend credibility to
his claims to a non-existent feat. It has become one
labyrinthine network of tortuous, self-reinforcing
falsehoods. Only Philip Emeagwali’s carefully
packaged fraud outrivals this. So sad!

there may e some truth in it.

I disagree. Yes it is major but .ot nearly enough if we want to have huge industrialization. It might be enough to take care of the lresent need of the state but going forward, it is not enough.
The way I see Ondo/Ekiti, these are states that have the potential for bot just agriculture but agro-allied and processing companies

I won’t renege on paying N18k minimum wage- Amosun

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun says he will not renege on his promise to pay the N18, 000 minimum wage despite calls by some other state governors to have the minimum wage reduced due to the reduced Federal allocation.

Governor Amosun stated this during the presentation of the 2016 Appropriation bill to the members of the State House of Assembly in Abeokuta yesterday November 24th.

He said his administration which had been consistent in paying its workers in spite of dwindling revenue from the Federation Account was committed to increasing the minimum wage if the economy improves.

Amosun added that Ogun State remained the only State that pays marginally above minimum wage, assuring that government’s attention would be shifted to rural roads to complement the ongoing urban infrastructural projects in the next fiscal year.

Chief Wole Olanipekun was
unveiled on Saturday by the
Ekiti State Governor Ayodele
Fayose. PRECIOUS
IGBONWELUNDU reports that
the facility is second to none
in the state.

.
Inside the State Specialist
Hospital in Ikere-Ekiti, a
magnificent structure stood
out. The road to it was well
tarred, flower beds properly
laid out, with a state-of-the-art
ambulance parked in front of
it.
.
Welcome to the Iyaafin
Bosede Olanipekun Special
Amenity Ward donated to the
state government by former
President of the Nigerian Bar
Association (NBA) Chief Wole

Guests who thronged to the
venue, including Governor
Ayodele Fayose for the
unveiling of the 26-bed
special amenity ward,
equipped with a 3D
Ultrasound scan with capacity
for echo-cardiography,
marvelled at the masterpiece
erected within four months to
boost medical care for the
people.
As Fayose was taken round
the beautiful structure, which
has a standard kitchen,
laundry room as well as every
other world-class facility, he
could not hide his disbelief
that an individual could do so
much even at a time states
were finding it difficult to pay
salaries.
The governor directed that
the facility must be
maintained and monthly
inventory taken to ensure it
stays evergreen.
To Fayose, Chief Olanipekun is
a blessing and pride to
Nigeria. Showering
encomiums on the learned
silk, Governor Fayose pledged
to emulate him by embarking
on a similar project in memory
of his parents.
Governor Fayose stated that
unlike other rich men who will
choose to save their wealth

Chief Olanipekun has
continuously embarked on
programmes and projects that
would benefit the less-
privileged in the society.

It's been quite interesting reading through all of the 373 pages of this discussion, and I appreciate seeing so much passion on here to do something to better the condition of our people. My problem, as a child of Oduduwa in the diaspora, is that I just don't see any means of contributing or participating that doesn't require involvement in organizations that have been tainted by the same old politicians. Where are the unaffiliated sociocultural groupings like original Egbe Omo Oduduwa? I'm sure that there are many professionals in and outside Nigeria who would be interested in joining in such groups as a means of contributing their skills and insights, but all I've been able to find are groupings centered on particular towns and regions of Yorubaland.

In any case, I hope that whatever arguments might have occurred recently in this thread do not lead to it petering out ...

To answer the bolded, there is no such organization. If you do decide to get involved, and you should, be ready to roll up your sleeves as you will run into unprogressive elements with different agenda. As much as I would not like to recommend him, you should study Tinubu very well, the man is wise even if his character is not angelic. Remember, he was a returnee too at one point

The Speech of His Excellency Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at the Launch of the Revised Laws of Lagos State 2015 on Tuesday, 8th December, 2015

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the launch of the Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015. Lagos has always taken the lead in Legislation and Law Reform initiatives in the Nigerian Federation.

The need for legislation to be up to date and relevant cannot be over-emphasised in ensuring the necessary legal infrastructure for socio-economic transformation. Lagos as the commercial capital of Nigeria faces enormous challenges in ensuring the security and economic well-being of its residents.

The publication of the 2015 Laws of the State, marks the beginning of the process of continually making the Laws accessible to the general public not only in Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole, but also beyond its borders globally.

The State Government has resolved to also make the Laws of Lagos State available online and accessible from any part of the world.

To this end, Lagos State Law Reform Commission is at an advanced stage of developing an online platform for accessing the Laws of the State and downloading such laws. The online platform will also provide access to all the Laws that have operated in the State since inception in 1967. This will fulfil the obligation of the Lagos State Government to create easy access to the Laws of Lagos, thereby promoting a platform for accountability and responsibility.

More importantly, creating an online access to the Laws of Lagos State will be of a great service and benefit to investors and would-be investors in the State. Not only will such a platform enable investors to make informed decisions about investing in the State, but it will also help them to appreciate the various legal protections available for their persons and investment.

Furthermore, the publication of the Laws of Lagos State is a step in the direction of the justice and security sector reforms which the present administration promised it will pursue in order to strengthen the rule of law in Lagos State.

The publication of the 2015 Edition would not have been possible without the cooperation and hard work of the Lagos State House of Assembly for passing the laws contained in the compilation. The passage of the Laws by the State House of Assembly attests to the fact that it is the most active and vibrant legislative body in the whole of Nigeria. We cannot also but commend Lagos State Law Reform Commission for the initiative and effort resulting in the publication of the Laws of Lagos State 2015.

On this note, I whole-heartedly commend the Laws of Lagos State 2015 to the general use of all of us.

Thank you

His Excellency,

Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode

Governor of Lagos State

To answer the bolded, there is no such organization. If you do decide to get involved, and you should, be ready to roll up your sleeves as you will run into unprogressive elements with different agenda. As much as I would not like to recommend him, you should study Tinubu very well, the man is wise even if his character is not angelic. Remember, he was a returnee too at one point

Thanks, that's just what I feared. I get what you're saying about Tinubu, but as you note, the man doesn't exactly have the purest reputation, and when I look at him, or faux-populists like Fayose with his "government by photo op", it makes me all the more reluctant to get personally involved in the rough and tumble of Nigerian politics.

What I would most like to do is help draw up a plan for action or manifesto which could be used to exert pressure on the Yoruba political class to do more than just engaging in phony "man of the people" nonsense or starting up random infrastructure projects with no vision of how they will be maintained in the long term. Having studied the history of economic development of the likes of Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and now China, I see no reason why the same kind of takeoff couldn't happen in Yorubaland, but that requires a level of vision that I haven't seen from any politicians other than Fashola, Fayemi and (to some extent) Tinubu.
