Enugu, The Pride Of The East. by spyder880(m): 12:15pm On Jul 01, 2012
I love this state, and the towns that make up the state. I dont know if I will ever like to live anywhere else but Enugu, the way of life of the citizens of Enugu seems to be the best in the country.

Enugu people are very accomodating, hardworking and yet humble. We have everything here and yes, Enugu is working.

In this thread, I will try to change the perception of people about how bad or negative Nigeria is, lets start from where we are. I expect everyone to do something, lets stop the negativity for a while and focus on our positives. There are more good things in Nigeria than bad. You only need to look for it and see it.

I will flood this thread with so many pictures that people will complain, I have about 150 pictures loaded (more will be added this new week), I am ready to paste them here but I will post those in the evening, many towns were covered, many of our landmarks are here. The good, the moderately good and the terrible.

But let me just be posting and typing words for now, explaining some facts about Enugu.

. . the last 3/4 governors of the state have not been that bad.

And Enugu has benefited.

However, a lot more needs to be done.

I was born in Enugu state, Nsukka zone, had my primary education in Enugu Ezike and later left for secondary education in my local govt of Nkanu, I was in Ozalla Boys for 6 years. I have lived in Udi zone for the past 20 years, working and doing business everywhere, especially in the capital city of Enugu. So you can see there are very few people that knows Enugu like I know it. The 3 senatorial zones of Enugu will be covered in my analysis of Enugu, maybe this thread will change a few things, and make our government to think (if they still have that ability) cheesy

As FACE rightly pointed out, Enugu had always been blessed with good governance. Jim Nwobodo simply did too much in Enugu (he did much more for the now Anambra state) Jim built so many projects that his name has been immortalized. Every part of the state has a touch of Jim and good governance. The roads, companies, schools, bridges, electrification projects and water networks were all executed before us.

The only time we have problems are the time of military rule, I cannot lay hands on any tangible project executed during the military era, as long as it was.

C.C. Onoh would have done something good, he had the potential but the military cut him off in his first month I think.

Chimaroke as a governor was a noise maker, controversial, arrogant and confident. He worked very qell when compared to his counterparts from other parts of the east. I know he was also very corrupt, but there were results of his works on the ground for all to see, a new state university was completed up to 60%, decongested the state by building many housing projects out of the city boundries, built many roads and electricity into the estates, developed Nkanu land and stood his ground about it. Fearless, couragious and still effective as a governor.

Sullivan had an excellent first tenure, continuing the gains made by Chimaroke. He is still working and I like the quality of his jobs. The Akwata road near Ogbete is perfect, New market road is the best idea to solve that age long congestion, now the Ziks Avenue bridge diversion, all heavy project and with superior quality. Have you plied the Udi-Ozalla by pass, excellento!

In Enugu state, there are a good number of very good schools. Starting from creche's, kindergatten, nursery and primary schools, secondary and universities. There are just too many private schools in Enugu of varying grades, if you want the one for the poor, the one for the middle class and the one for the super rich, you get it all here in safe locations.

Names like Pine Crest schools, Mea matter Elizabeth schools, Air force secondary schoools, Osisatech schools, Madonna schools, FGCE, CIC, HRC, University of Nigeria, ESUT, IMT, etc.

As at last count, Enugu state have about 9 tertiary institutions including UNN, ESUT, Nigerian Law school and IMT.

Like someone once asked, "Does Enugu town have night life"

Okay, for a city to have night life, there should be some things needed to make that happen, people need to relax after work and enjoy themselves. Crime rate in Enugu is very low, hardly can you hear of any serious crime in the state, people drive around every part of the state till the early hours of the morning.

There are "liquour"if you are interested, good quality palm wine, kai kai, and yes, we have a very large brewery in Enugu state (Largest brewery in West √Āfrica), the Ama brewery of Nigerian breweries PLC where Star, Gulder, Heinneken, Legend etc rolls out every second of every day. Guinness also throws in supplies in trailer loads every day.

We have lots of bush where enough bush meat are supplied from (I have the pictures of different bush meat) if you wan chop isi ewu, nkwobi, ugba, okporoko, abacha or peppersoup, please sit down and place your order.

And if you want to socialize with women, if you get credit to make the call
grin them plenty wella, I mean, where can you lock up students from 9 tertiary institutions in the evening? Them go waka about na, them be human beings and have a right to enjoy their lives.

You can also followship in our churches in the evenings, all known and unknown churches have branches here and are building more every street.

Variety plenty.

Enugu is a class society just like many cities. There is the rich man zone, the middle class zone, the poor people sections (shanties)

If you are very rich in Enugu, we expect you to live at Independence layout, or old GRA, please dont let us catch you in Obiagu or Abakpa cheesy what we have in this part of town are mainly large private compounds, well fed and healthy looking security men with fat dogs.

New Haven, Trans Ekulu are also for the rich, lower class rich.

The middle class are very comfortable in Achara layout, Uwani. They occupy those flats and self contains there.

The Ajegunle of Enugu is in Abakpa Nike, Obiagu is an urban jungle, Coal camp with their mud houses and neatly arranged streets done by the colonialists mining coal in the 1910-1920s.

We sabi ourselves, just fit into where you belong.

Enugu town is not the only big town in this state, we have the university town of Nsukka, Agbani with its 2 universities and one Law school and Ninth Mile corner with about 5 large companies. Nigerian Breweries, Coca cola, 7up bottling company, Aqua Rapha, Sharon paints etc are all here in Ninth mile. We have an industrial layout at Emene, housing so many companies on their large industrial plots with an airport sitting close by.

If I were to be the governor of this state, I will develope Oji River town, its coming up but we need more investments there to make it as big as it needs to be.

And you forgot Ogui! The heartbeat of the state. Thats where 60% of banks with branches in Enugu are located. More like the VI of Lagos.

Right, right, Ogui is also for the middle low class, the only saving grace for Ogui is the Ogui road with all its commercial activities. I got the roads and structures well covered in pictures.

The only thing that keeps enugu alive is the student/youth population, the state is filled with old civil servants with rickety vehicles. Enugu is usually boring whenever the students are on vacation. Owerri is the place to be men. . .

Owerri has nothing on Enugu, call places in Owerri that you can compare with Enugu. People come to have fun in Enugu, from Owerri and all other eastern cities. Does Owerri have a Shoprite outlet, Game?

Is there a villa de la Toscana in Owerri? grin

Oga e don do. Owerri cannot stand side by side in comparison with Enugu, in any way! I repeat, in any way!
Everything in Owerri has its match in Enugu times 2 and i'm being honest.
