So Is Fat Really What Is In, In Africa? by angelgirl1(f): 1:22pm On May 25, 2009 |
I am Black American and I watch Nigerian movies, Ghanaian movies, etc, I noticed that the fat women in these shows are not presented as being unattractive at all. While in American movies the fat women are usually portrayed as unattractive, desperate and lonely, and if not all of those, then they are presented as the aggressors(that is they chase the man) as if the only way a man will notice them is if they initiate contact because they are less attractive than the thin counterparts. Fat women are always presented as inferior to the thin woman/women in American movies to sum it up. Not that any of this bothers me. I am objective to it. I just noticed a stark difference in the presentation of fat women in African movies vs. American movies. I just wondered which body type considered most attractive in Africa or at least Nigeria. Also has the west's obsession or glorification of thinner women had any influence in what African's consider an attractive body? |

no, it's because nollywood films are made to fuel hopes and dreams of ugly bush girls |

I was just asking which body type is considered more beautiful thin or fat. I wasn't passing any judgment or anything. Sorry if I offended you. So I take it, it can go either way. |

Generally most africans like their women a little fleshy. Personally, I have always loved the slim woman. |

@Poster, Point of Correction! They are not Fat,They are Full Bodied. I see your movies too and I wonder why you people are glorifying those skinny ones. In Africa, there are tribes who judge men's wealth by the appearance of their wives, a skinny wife is seen as having a poor husband. As for me, I prefer a full bodied woman anytime anyday. |

angelgirl1: In Africa BBWs are regarded as an evidence of good living whille the slim ones are asked o get some food. I don't really chose but i prefer some fleshy stuff in bed, |

most men will always like a woman who is in shape. so slender with a s s, some boobs and a flat tummy. the older generation are usually the ones who liked bigger women, because it signified being well fed- hence coming from a well-to-do family. but like i say, younger nigerian men like a woman who appears to look after herself and her body. nigerian films are simply not as corrupt as american films, in that they are not trying to push some sort of ideal trough their actresses. a typical film will contain unattractive and some very pretty girls, playing roles despite their appearance. however, this may change as nigeria continues to 'develop' |

poster above me- thats not what i'm saying at all. i was actually praising the nigerian movie industry for not being so manipulative. and i'm sorry, but being big is UNHEALTHY. say what yu like, but its true. a woman (and man for that matter) should be fit, toned, slender , whatever you want to call it. i did not say SKINNY or ANOREXIC, so pls don't make this debate become childish. |

really typical african foods and societal ideas encourages '"obesity",if u r slim people tend 2 look down on u as being malnourished.foods like pounded yam, eba, fufu are usually high in calories.infact if u get married n ur husband is slim n gets slimmer, its a sign dat d woman is not taking care of him or giving him good food but if he starts getting obessed its a sure sign dat d wife is taking care of him, same goes 4 d woman.child birth is another factor of obesity.so obesity is an african thingy,2 some people it's fashionable but 2 me its unhealthy and very unsmart |
