Every schoolboy and schoolgirl around probably knows why he made his famous Revolutionary War crossing when he did. Washington wanted to catch the Hessian mercenaries (employed by the British military) by surprise, in the midst of their holiday celebrations. He did.
The general crushed the enemy and captured plenty of arms and prisoners at the same time. Washington and his men won an outstanding Christmas victory, which went down in the American history books.

One of the most amazing and bizarre things to happen on Christmas Day came amidst the blood and carnage of the trench warfare so common to the battlefields of WWI. For several days, during the holiday celebrations, temporary ceasefires broke out between the British and German forces serving along the Western Front.
Even though these men had been slaughtering each other only days, if not hours prior, some of them ventured across enemy lines and brought Christmas gifts with them. Groups of soldiers even sang carols with their enemies and played a few pickup games of soccer. War can often be brutal and strange, yet somehow peppered with acts of kindness.

On this day, The British garrison in the city of Hong Kong surrendered. The day after Pearl Harbor, December 8, 1941, the Japanese began bombing raids on the city. The British immediately put up a resistance and began evacuating the Chinese population to the Philippines. When the Japanese were alerted to this, they sent their navy to block off their evacuation roots, effectively cutting off the city from the sea. Attempts to flee the city by land were futile, as the Japanese army quickly surrounded the city, completely blockading it. They were cut off from any outside help, and the Japanese cut the water and power lines to the city. Facing death by dehydration, the British raised the white flag of surrender on Christmas morning. This event set up Japan for their planned invasion and takeover of China.

As part of 1968’s Apollo 8 mission, astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and William Anders spent the night before Christmas orbiting the moon. The operation was originally planned to test out the lunar module—later used in the Apollo 11 moon landing—in Earth’s orbit. But when work on the module fell behind schedule, NASA ambitiously changed the mission plan to a lunar voyage. Apollo 8 went on to result in a series of breakthroughs for manned space flight: The three astronauts became the first men to leave Earth’s gravitational pull, the first to orbit the moon, the first to view all of Earth from space and the first to see the dark side of the moon.
Apollo 8 is perhaps best remembered today for the broadcast the three astronauts made when they entered the moon’s orbit on Christmas Eve. As viewers were shown pictures of the moon and Earth from lunar orbit, Borman, Lovell and Anders read the opening lines of the book of Genesis from the Bible. The broadcast—which ended with the famous line “Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth”—became one of the most watched television events in history.
