it's easy 4 them aliens 2 get away wt this kind of behaviour cos we nigerians re a divided lot. I am not implying we re all cuddle up & kiss but we have 2 make sure rule of law is upheld no matter who is involved. when we respect each other regardless of differing opinion, tribe or religion, the foreigners would follow suit

Find your house of representative contact and ask him to help you find if every foreigner in that company has valid and up-to-date residential permit

My condolences, the proper thing would have been to inform him of the wedding, before leaving, the fact that a colleague told you he wont approve is wrong, you should have informed him first.

Whats the point in begging to be let in the office premises when you left without permission, theres no point in bringing the matter to the cops cos , you left without permi.

Its better to quit the 30k job than spend 50k in the courts.

Nigerians feel so inferior whenever they meet fair skin foreigners. The inferiority complex is so deep.

Lebanese are not white (most clueless Nigerians think they're), they're africans who happened to be brown. They're the same as our half-castes.

Nigerians should demand respect from foreigners. What this st*upid Lebanese did here, they won't tolerate it in their own country.

Church-rat lebanese id*iots who couldn't make it in their country, come to Nigeria and become rich overnight on the backs of suffering Nigerians they use and abuse!

On no account or circumstance should any person be it colleague or boss (either Native or Foreigner) slap another. Assault is an unlawful act irrespective of where it takes place. Remember dealing with a Chinese man who slapped his driver a couple of years back. According to the driver, his boss had this nocturnal habit of patronising Chinese prostitutes. He had dozed off in the car around 2 am while waiting for his boss. The boss came out, tapped him for them to go and in the process of trying to pull out the car from the very tight park, he mistakenly brushed one of the car's side mirror against another car which got the mirror broken. The boss angered by this, slapped him which was of course, one amongst several other slaps he had received from him in the course of working for him. He (Chinese) was made to do a letter of apology/undertaking and as well, pay the sum of #2,000,000 as compensation/damages after much negotiation and pleas. My guy after receiving the money (after fees have been deducted grin ), quit his job and relocated to his home state to start a new life.

I work for a construction company in Port Harcourt owned by 2 Lebanese brothers. I work as one of the two Administrative staff. I was employed two years ago and the very first thing I noticed about the place was the care - free manner the Lebanese people smoke. They smoke all kinds of things openly in the office not minding the health implications on other staff. I also noticed the total lack of respect that those people have for us Nigerians. They told me stories of how they insult people, throw all kinds of objects at them and I even heard they physically fight them. I always thought it was funny and I never ever thought that I'll be a victim of such horrible, barbaric and slave-master attitude from these people. I am a BSc degree holder in accounting and I am being paid #30,000 plus I have to work on Saturdays too.

On Friday last week I requested for permission. I informed the workshop manager that my friend would be wedding the following day(Saturday). He said I should go directly to the MD of the company a dental request for permission myself. I said no, that nobody goes directly to him knowing his very bad attitude and lack of respect for everyone and besides he's the MD and shouldn't be bothered by such trivial issues.

So I proceeded to go to the wedding on that Saturday thinking my request had been granted or at the most I would be marked absent on that day. I returned to work on Monday and I was stopped at the gate. The security people said the MD told them not to let me in. When I asked why, they said it was because I didn't come to work on Saturday. I was so shocked. In any case I begged and pleaded but I was advised to go home and come back the following day (yesterday) and beg him to let me continue working. I went to the office early and waited for him to come and then I started begging him. The moment he saw me he started insulting me. He said I was useless and ungrateful. I kept on begging. He came close to me and gave me a hot slap on my left cheek. I never in my widest dream expected to be slapped by any person whether boss or not. I was so furious that it took God's grace not to beat him up. I knew if I beat him up I won't have a good case against him. So I insulted him and stormed out of the office. I reported the case at the police station. They invited him to make his statement and my dad (who doubles as my Lawyer) is handling the issue.

I am going to make sure he will never forget this experience. He would pay heavily for this and other crimes he has committed against innocent Nigerians. He was so shocked and I could see some fear in his eyes at the police station. He never expected anyone much less the very quiet boy who sits in a corner of his big company to drag him to police station and to sue him to court.

The Lebanese, Indians and Chinese are fond of maltreating we Nigerians. Even his Lawyer confessed that they see us as slaves in our own country which is a very terrible situation. Many Nigerians are afraid of standing up for their rights when these people treat them badly. I'm writing this long message to encourage people to always stand up for their rights and never let anyone or situation intimidate them. I would love to hear from anyone that has gone through similar situations before.

So sorry about that. But, if you want to know why you receive meager N30,000 as salary plus insults from foreigners, read the link on my signature, part 1 and 2. When you understand ''why'' you can join me in the crusade.

well first of all even though you are my country man, i still will tell you the truth. If you know how people behave, then you know how to deal with them. the way you conduct and carry yourself anywhere you are is how you will be treated. you erred by not making your request for leave absolutely official. You told your work shop manager about it and he advised you to speak with your boss. you should have done so and all this would not be happening.
secondly you goofed when you eventually resumed office. you should not have begged him. there is a difference between apologizing and begging. i am sure you your countenance and disposition portrayed fear and that you were absolutely sorry and scared of losing your job, which gave you away. you don't show fear to such people, you show strength, confidence yet remorse. this would have made him think twice before assaulting. but because he saw you apologizing probably almost kneeling he knew you were scared of losing your job and scared of him too as your boss so he attacked you. i am not saying all this to make you see me as a bigger man, i just want you to know when dealing with a bully you don't show fear.

in any case i commend your patience and hope you deal with him severely because it is becoming routine for these Indians and Lebanese who are way below us Nigerian.

God bless you my brother. I'm shocked at some people's Comments. People saying I was at fault for not asking for permission even after I stated that I did are not very smart.

you are the one who is not very smart.... your manager tells you that he cannot grant you the day off on such a short notice, and that you have to take the issue with the MD, and YOU decided not to listen to your manager and instead "disappear". how difficult is this to understand?!
who granted you the right to not come to work? it sure wasnt your workshop manager.

How can you say anybody created by God deserves to be beaten just because he didn't come to work on Saturday which isn't even compulsory because it's calculated as overtime. The people accusing me have zero self esteem and don't understand basic human rights.

whether it is calculated as overtime or not is irrelevant here. if your contract stipulates that you have to work on saturdays, then thats it. blame only yourself for signing that contract. why do you change your story as you go along? wasnt it you who wrote the following:

I am a BSc degree holder in accounting and I am being paid #30,000 plus I have to work on Saturdays too.

Our Igbo driver did something like that to our boss a Romanian which got the expatriate arrested. That Igbo man even lied to the police and the white man had no defence. He lied to the police that our boss called him "black monkey" which we knew wasnt true.

He is over 60 and the oldest serving driver but wanted to drive the biggest car in the office (Toyota prado) which is only used for site/interstate trips while he has been driving a corolla within city for meetings and shopping. The drivers driving the big cars make more money as they get access to spending more on their cars such as fuel, repairs, hotels and travel allowance. Fighting for the new prado led to the exchange which he threatened report of descrimination. Next hr police showed up with trumped up charges demanding almost 500k in settlement and severance pay. He was paid and we never heard from him.

We almost took the same expatriate to the cops last year, he begged when my temper reached the roof.

But truthfully, you behaved in an unserious and nonchalant manner about your job and deserve to be sacked if he so desires. Make use of your senses next time. You're no longer a child.

He erred but does not deserve to be slapped.

First, good job on taking action to stop employee assault in the workplace. Regardless of one's nationality, employee assault should not be tolerated. Even Nigerian employers maltreat their own employees daily.

Someone said you should not have begged, well it is the automatic Nigerian way of apologizing or showing remorse, as you would if your boss had been a Nigerian boss, and expressing remorse varies from country to country. Americans show their own remorse in a different way.
Labour laws in Nigeria are quite weak and even if there are laws, they are rarely ever enforced. These laws need to be instituted to prevent employee assault in both national and international companies. The argument that foreign companies 'contribute' to the economy, as one poster said, and should be given 'leeway' of any sense does not make sense.

In addition, Nigerians have been used to 'suffering and smiling' or being abused all their lives and letting it go that they barely even know their rights or when they are being abused that foreigners take it for 'cowardice' or as room to abuse them since they would not 'report' or 'react' anyway.

While i admonish you for not officially making your request to absent yourself from work on saturday, i immensely admire your self-control and resistance of the urge to do something stupid after he had slapped you. I also commend your decision to tow the litigation path. I am very sure he was shocked at your action.

Now, considering the corrupt connivance of these lebanese with those in the higher echelon, it will be extremely difficult for you to go the extent of asking for their papers to be investigated and consequent deportation. To tell ourselves the truth, they also contribute economically to the country - imagine how many people would be thrown on the streets if your boss and his brother were asked to leave the country.

So, i recommend you sue him demanding he pays for the assault he made on your person. We have a lot of enlightened lawyers on Nairaland who would probably see this case and love to take it up. Also, write to the Office Of the Public Defender (OFP) stating your case.

After these law officials overwhelm him and he pays a huge sum of money to free himself off this case, i am doubly sure he will think twice before assaulting anyone verbally talk more of physically.

Please keep us informed about this case.

Because his ass is black. Because only black people don't go to work because of wedding, child dedication, burials etc. Because in saner climes nobody can unilaterally leave work for a wedding without proper permission. Because when you think you are right you don't go begging like the OP did.
