President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, congratulated elder statesman and former President Olusegun Obasanjo (GCFR), as he turns 79 years old tomorrow (March 5, 2016), stating that many generations will remain grateful to him (Obasanjo) for his legacies of heralding smooth transitions in many countries. OBJ-and-Buhari In a statement by Special Adviser to the President (Media& Publicity), Femi Adesina, President Buhari affirmed that the former president, who is approaching the octogenarian cycle, has contributed immensely to the institutionalization of democracy in Nigeria and Africa through his personal sacrifice, extensive local and international networks, and God-given wisdom. The statement read: “President Buhari believes that Chief Obasanjo’s place in global history is assured for successfully handing over power to a civilian government in 1979 after serving as a military Head of State, and returning to power in 1999 through elections to stabilize the polity, during which he most remarkably negotiated a debt relief for Nigeria. “The President warmly commends Chief Obasanjo’s vision and commitment to the growth of Nigeria and Africa, which translated into a historical growth rate of 6 percent for the Nigerian economy after a long period of slow growth, and also created a rippling effect that buoyed other African economies. “As he turns 79, the President avers that the former president’s regular shuttles across Nigeria and Africa to counsel on economic, social and political issues, and his willingness to head election monitoring teams that have heralded smooth transitions in many countries are legacies which generations will remain grateful. “President Buhari prays that the Almighty God will grant the Balogun of the Owu lineage, who is also the Ekerin Balogun of the Egba clan, long life and strength to continue his service to humanity.”

They have something in common, they both ruled Nigeria twice. Next is Babangida, in 2019 when he aligns with Tinubu, sharareporters would be singing like parrot of how amazing and patriotic Babangida is. The SW and the North would vote him in large numbers and Wala!!! Babangida would have achieved his second mandate.

This country is seriously sick.

Which obasanjo is buhari talking about and what exactly should we be grateful for, buhari and double speak is like bread and butter.
At some point he will say pdp administration ruin this country and at some other point he will be praising the guy that account for maximum years of the pdp misrule.
I know obasanjo have secret documents detailing your past corrupt practices but please stop insulting our sensibilities by projecting obasanjo as a role model. I rather have Hitler as a role model than that cunning and crafty old man from Otta that steal nigeria blind and still parading himself as a saint. Birds of the same feather

I'm sure Obasanjo's biggest regret is not handing over to Buhari in 2007 otherwise Nigeria would have gone very far by now. I'm sure the total rigging of 2007 election for Yar'Adua was because he(OBJ) had excess skeleton in his closet.

Obasanjo really did great for Nigeria but Yar'Adua/Jonathan failed to heed to his advice.

Though obj got many things wrong, he still got the some key things right. As the start of the fourth republic, obj wasn't an error to have being the president, he's got the command, wherewithal and confidence to usher in his words and no one dare go against it, else, military could have taken over if he was too complacent. The aura he oozes was just what kept us together, else, Nigeria would have long gone down the drain with all the things he did! So in all, he did many things which are not progressive to right minded people but still, he gave the presidency his best shot and he tried in his capacity... Just that obj over chop money, yet, he's never being docked! Eternal immunity and unto sharp guy. always aligning with government in power! And threatening those not doing his bid. Obj the sharp daddy that covers his tracks well!

The darkest stain on Obassanjo's legacy besides the third term debacle is the ineffectual buffoon GEJ. It will take decades to reverse the damage he and his cronies inflicted on Nigeria. The wasted 6 years. History will judge him harshly. Good riddance to bad rubbish!

Are you actually kidding me? Between 1999 - 2007 OBJ squandered $16 billion in his giagantic power projects that supposedly entered the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest power project any country could ever embark upon.

How many Mega watts of electricity did he add to our national grid?

Well just for you to feel sorry for your supposed support for a massively corrupt individual like Obasanjo, Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam costs the govt. of Ethiopia $4.8 billion and it has an Installed capacity of 6,000 MW, well it's being constructed at a record time of 6 years and it is the biggest hydroelectric project in Africa currently.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Ethiopian_Renaissance_Dam

Can you see what that amount would have done to our power sector? We would have moved to other things not the recurrent electricity campaign slogan we keep hearing on every campaign trail in Nigeria.

You think because these corrupt fools move around freely, it makes them inculpable of the fact that they have mismanaged this country to an extent of comatose.
