ariesbull: Everyone literate Yoruba version sticks to the middle east version. Several Yoruba words have arab origins. E.g. Adura(Yoruba), Adua(Arabic) means prayer. Alejo(Yoruba), El-Hadj(Arabic) means visitor. Barika(Yoruba), Barka(Arabic) means congrats. Etc etc Yorubas as a whole were expelled from the middle east as a result of idolatry which went against Islam. That's why Oduduwa came over from the same middle east, it wasn't difficult accepting him. |

Lol. Bini Kingdom was the most overrated kingdom ever. It wasn't an empire - just a glorified kingdom or artisans, who studied in Ife and Owo - coupled with bits of Ijebu civilisation. The so-called "great wall" either never existed, was made out of leaves and trees, or it was just a small wall, exaggerated by Bini historians to Europeans explorers. I'll go with the latter cos Bini historians were notorious for being great liars. They were the same clowns who lied to European historians that Ijebu kingdom was a vassal state, yet the ruins of Sungbo Eredo is still there, while there's no trace of the so-called "Great Bini Wall". Stop disgracing black folks everywhere with this lousy kingdom, whose claim to fame had more to do with fables, jejune tales, and outright lies - than anything. Yes, Bini kingdom had great artisans from Owo and Ife, but that's it stops. It was never an empire and the "great wall" only existed in their heads. And Bini's size today is the same as that of the old kingdom - unlike Oyo which extended all the way to present day Ghana, with layers of different ethnic groups. Bini couldn't even defeat Owo, had its arse handed to it by Igala, and had to beg the Mahins to get them to Lagos to build a war camp due to innate fear of Dahomey, so as to avoid other kingdoms - yet it was empire. FOH. Regardless, they had great artisans and Bini artworks are some of the best out of Africa. But stop the exaggeration. An empire with folks who were sold as slaves by small Itsekiri - hysterical. 3 Likes |

Seriously, much as I love the fact that Benin made a name for itself, it appears that the love we have for them is being embellished to lay claims to all manner of imaginary accomplishments.... ....how can a glorified kingdom suddenly lay claim to being an empire....without any evidence of this empire other than their say so..... As pointed out by many here, Benin never even conquered their next door smaller neighbour in Owo or Ikare.... ....and even their carvings are predated by hundreds of years by the Ife carvings...facts established through the scientifically acknowledge technic of carbon dating......even their kings title is omo n'oba which means in Yoruba....child of the king....a clear indication of the fact that the Yoruba narrative makes more sense.... ....also why did ogiso end after the grandson of oduduwa took their throne....why were the heads of their Obas sent to Ife for burial after death....Benin is not even up to two percent of the Yoruba race....even the runaway prince they talk about occurred like five hundred years after oduduwa had long departed our planet.... . Gosh na wa for our Benin brothers and sisters o ..how could a runaway prince find his way to Ife.....a journey that in those days would have taken almost fifty days...he would have been starving....hungry....dirty.....at least almost half dead....and the same man would be made king in a land where they would not even understand him sef.... .... |

ariesbull: Bini men love to intermarry with Ijebu women, over several generations and many have also migrated and intermarried with the natives of neighbouring Ondo. So the mix of cultures and language isn't too surprising. |
