Do you really know the meaning of open relationship?. Do it actually have same meaning to everyone?. Someone with username ChuzzyBlog came online on March 8, 2016 by 10:49am to ask this question( What do people mean when they say they are in a open relationship) from nairalanders and the several opinions led to the generation of these data and extraction of the two main meaning of “open relationship”

From the data gathered from those that commented between March 8,2016 by 10:56am to March 09, 10:13am we had these results. Responses that were not relevant to the subject matter were removed from the analysis.

Demographic


As shown in the table and Bar chart below, 12 males , 6 females and 7 people did not disclose their gender. 25 responders were valid for the analysis.

The response for respective responders was coded into four main category.
(1) Having other partner(s) while in relationship
(2) Relationship open to public
(3) Just for fun
(4) Open to public and having other partner(s) while in relationship.

As shown in the table below, 13 responders supported having a partner(s) while in relationship; where 7 males supported , 3 females and 3 people that didn’t disclose gender. 9 responders supported relationship open to public, 3 are females, 3 are males and 2 didn’t disclose gender, 2 people supported just for fun, while one is male and one did not disclose gender. Just one person went for both having partner(s) while in relationship and open to public and that one person did not disclose identity.

Discussion



Harnessing the available results generated, it shows some people believe open relationship means a relationship which supports having partner(s) while in the relationship. According to NewSheriff(m)

“People have answered it already, it(open relationship) means they are open to as many options as possible . Free to have keep other relationship while this (relationship) one is still running”

And while some other believes it means the relationship is open to the public there is commitment and family and friends and general public knows about the relationship. According to Martdap12(m)

“means they are not hiding if from anyone. You are open to everyone about it, more of flaunting it. Means they are not hiding it from anyone. You are open to everyone about it, more of flaunting it.”

The two main general theme generated are that open relationship can be either defined as having relationship that everyone knows about or having a free relationship where partners can easily cheat. It can also be deduced that males are more in support of open relationship being having other partner(s) during relationship than females.

Limitations

(1) The number of opinions sampled were too small, larger sample will give more accurate result
(2) Not all responders disclosed their identity
(3) It is difficult to know the true perspectives of responders.
