Dr Ferlie: I have decided to create a thread for drilling engineers and drilling supervisors ( company man ), so that we can share experience and best practices. This is a nice thread I just ran into. I'm considering studying Mud Engineering in PTI. Although my background is not engineering but sciences, Maths to be precise, what are my chances of landing a good job ? Could U share more light on Mud Engineering? |

Hello house. I recently got an admission to study subsea engineering at Cranfield University. Having studied electrical and electronics engineering in my first degree without good grades I believe I can graduate with good grades too from the msc. The real reason,I am here is for to ask one simple question,is spending 6million at Cranfield University a justified investment? What's the salary range for a subsea engineer? I currently have two years work experience in the manufacturing industry, will it hamper my chances after the msc to secure a job that will help me offset some of the debts that will result from this advanced degree? Thanks in anticipation |

GeneralShepherd:Bro, I would advise you to think about this critically. Subsea Engineering is the bomb now, no doubt about that, now that drilling activities are taking place in water depths exceeding 2000 m. However, the prospect of gaining employment as a graduate subsea engineer is very low, except you are connected. If you really are, you can go for it, else I would advise you to think it through, it might not worth it. |

PiperAlpha:. I am always of the believe that There is really no limit to what you can achieve as long as u set ur heart to it. For me, I still insist you go for it. Think inwardly if you can persevere, Job search isn't the easiest of things this days, but I can assure you that with subsea, you stand a very good chance of getting opportunities both locally & internationally. The choice is Yours!!! |

devmantic: Goodday @devmantic.. I must say I've read through all your posts and I've found very useful answers concerning some issues I needed to sort out. But some unresolved issues are still bothering me 1. I'm confused between applying for Tu clausthal or university of stavanger Norway. A classmate of mine whom did his internship in Germany (dresdern) precisely is of the opinion that its better to study Msc PEE in Norway than to do it in Germany because Norway has much more oil reserves than Germany and it will be relatively easier to secure a job after studies in Norway than in Germany. 2. Like the poster who I also quoted asked you.. How did you get the €8000 to survive during your second year? Working while schooling? Internship? Please I'd love to know cos frankly my parents would not be able to afford sending me such money again... They would instead want me to be doing the sending lol... And I don't know if that my friend who did his IT in Germany is correct... He said during your second year you are required to do paid internships form which you can take care of your second year expenses... Pleas how true is this (moreover I looked up TUC's internships website and M.SC PEE was not among the listed departments who normally do internships) 3. Then lastly I have a question for you concerning Norway.. In Norway like Germany, you are also required to pay a certain some of money into foreign account per year.. So my question is for the second year how again can one get the money by himself overthere? (working? Internships?) Thank you sir as you help a brother find his feet. |

Obiwannn: Hi Obiwannn. It's been a while since I last viewed this forum. "1. I'm confused between applying for Tu clausthal or university of stavanger Norway. A classmate of mine whom did his internship in Germany (dresdern) precisely is of the opinion that its better to study Msc PEE in Norway than to do it in Germany because Norway has much more oil reserves than Germany and it will be relatively easier to secure a job after studies in Norway than in Germany." I may not be able to give a precise answer on this but I will try to be as objective as I can. Your friend is right with regards to the current state of oil and gas reserve in Germany - it is practically dwindling. You do stand a chance of securing a job after graduation from both schools; however, with UniStavanger, I think you might get more job opportunities. "2. Pleas how true is this (moreover I looked up TUC's internships website and M.SC PEE was not among the listed departments who normally do internships)" I got a student job for the 1st semester (I worked in the Department). For the rest of the semesters, the doe I made from my internship was sufficient to keep me afloat. Let me stress one fact. Getting an internship could be challenging here as well. In my class, only about 46% of us got internships. In addition, getting an internship is NOT a prerequisite to passing the Masters Programme. Some students complete the programme without securing one. "3. Then lastly I have a question for you concerning Norway.. In Norway like Germany, you are also required to pay a certain some of money into foreign account per year.. So my question is for the second year how again can one get the money by himself overthere? (working? Internships?) Thank you sir as you help a brother find his feet." Hmm... This is a tough question. I am certain that students of UniStavanger are given the chance to take internships if they are able to secure one. Promising students who are unable to get internships are usually offered a student job at the Department. The professors secure their services for Scientific article writing, proof-reading, programming, experimental or simulation work, research among others. Others get any student job available e.g. Working in an automobile industry, waiters in restaurants and other menial jobs. The decision is yours to make. I hope all these were insightful and of immense help to you. Wishing u all the best. |

devmantic: Thank you sir for your very fast and objective reply. But I just have this one last question if you don't mind.. In the case of one not being able to secure an internship, can one easily get menial jobs that can sustain him through his second year of studies? And yes am learning the language already using an app on my phone. And can we please communicate via mails or facebook since you hardly visit the forum these days? |
Re: Subsea, Mud, Reservoir, Pipeline, Petroleum, Drilling Engineers & Supervisors Zone by devmantic(m): 11:17pm On Sep 17, 2014 |
Obiwannn: Well, it is quite possible, but on the long-term, it might adversely affect your scholarly performance. Since you would need to work more hours than required over the course of the semester break, you might have to forfeit several classes. An internship or some sort of home scholarship would be a better option to relying solely on menial jobs. Your folks will have to help you out in such scenario. I am particularly skeptical about placing my e-mail in a public forum. Send your e-mail to my nairaland inbox. I would try to reach you on time. Take care bro. 1 Like |

Dr Ferli I am a graduate of Chemistry and I want to pursue a career in the upstream oil and gas industry though I work in a different field now..I recently came across a training school here in Lagos that is offering courses.I have interest in enrolling for the the Assistant driller course...my questions are 1.the duration for the training is 10 days (classroom training and practical rig experience) Will this be ample time to get all the required knowledge one needs? 2.should I go ahead and apply for PGD program in petroleum engineering and later on go on to MSc in a university 3.How well recognized is the Institute of petroleum and drilling engineering IDPE in the the oil sector in Nigeria it seems new. the certificates that will be offered after the training are 1. IADC, Assistant Driller Certificate under IADC Drilling Industry Training Certificate (DIT) 2. IADC HSE Rigpass Certificate 3. IADC Well Control Certificate, Mandatory for every drilling personnel coming on board a rig. 4. Man- management and Rig management certificate. 5. Rig inspection Certificate. 6. Practical Rig exposure Certificate your advice is needed. 3 Likes |

Do You Want to be an Instrument/Automation Skilled Engineer? Instrumentation is the branch of Engineering which deals with the measurement, monitoring, display etc. of the various energy exchanges which take place during process operations. Simply put it, Instrumentation is the Study of Instrument. An instrument is a device which is used to measure, monitor, control...process variable. And these process Variable are 1. Flow 2. Temperature 3. Level 4. Pressure 5. pH 6. CO2 etc If you're aspiring to be an Instrument Engineer, you'd need good and quality training. There are many Quality training Institute across Nigeria. And their prices differs...typically, the price for training would be in the range of N60,000 - N450,000. Many times, the higher the fee, the better the total package. Instrumentation knowledge and Skill is very marketable. You can easily slide into other great career paths like Automation, PLC programming etc. And it is very much a field work. Now, when I speak with some students or recently job seeking graduates, their usual complain is that these trainings are too expensive. I always tell them that it is because the prospect is good and besides, anything of value isn't always cheap. An Engineer who just recently graduated with need quality skills to be of value to any organization and at the basic level of graduating, many Engineers lack quality skills. You can choose to Tutor yourself or find a quality training institute that you can learn new skills to make you marketable. Companies will not employ you because you're a graduate; but they will employ you because you can help them solve their problems. If you cannot afford at this time to attend a training institute on Instrumentation, you can contact me for Quality training Materials on 1. Instrumentation 2. Calibration 3. Automation 4. Programming of PLC. Etc These materials are from some of the best training schools, both local and abroad. I would send to you the total Package via Courier. If you are a diligent person with a sense of purpose towards developing skills that are well sought after in the Energy, Oil and Gas, as well as the Manufacturing Sector, you'd become an Asset in no time. The books and Videos I am going to send you will be a great source of knowledge and skill development if you are resourceful and willing to read and read and read and practice. Not to make this post too long, you can contact me via Newfrontiers09@gmail.com or 0703 221 4269 for further questions. |
