Doyin Okupe, a former Senior Special Assistant to former president Goodluck Jonathan, has urged state governors to downsize their workforce in view of the current cash crunch.

Okupe wrote on his Facebook page yesterday: “An immediate 20-30% cut down in staff strength is imperative, with provision of say, upfront payment of 3 years salaries for affected members of staff.”

According to him, all state governments in the country have over-bloated civil service.

He suggested that downsizing be continued in states at an annual rate of about 10 percent for about five years, saying this would create space for a controlled employment of “new youthful and better trained civil servants.”

For once I agree with PDP Okupe.

Nigeria at the moment does not have enough cash to sustain a big civil service. So...we have to start sacking excess workers.

(Unless someone here has a secret plan to get OPEC to raise oil prices to $123 per barrel....which is what we need to balance the books.).

Ghana did it in the late 1980's. Harsh....but in the long run...a good idea.

Yes PDP should have saved....but that would have just delayed this decision by two years.

I am with Okupe on this one, especially considering the economic downturn the country's currently experiencing. How can you rationalize a situation whereby less than 10% of a state's population (civil servants) takes over 90% of the allocation due to such states?? These are workers who prettymuch do NOTHING! Fact is that even most of the few states that aren't owing workers are actually borrowing from banks to meet up coz virtually all the states have debt profiles, just that some have maxed-out their borrowing privileges.

What he said is true ooooo!

Go to a typical Federal or State secretariat, over 40% of workers there have nothing to do. They come very late and close very early.

It might sound harsh but we either engage them all to earn their pay or downsize!

In a way....that is true. PDP spent 16 years in power....during which time they spent billions on power supply....and all we have now is 5000MW (On a good day).

PDP also should have saved under GEJ. But even if GEJ had saved everything....at best that gives us $100bn in savings. Which is good enough for two years.(Saudi Arabia had $724bn in savings at the start of the oil drop. Now...over 124bn of that has gone. And worse still....Saudi estimates that they have two years of good times left...before they start tightening belts.).

If there is any lesson to be learnt from this...it is the fact that relying on proceeds from selling resources is a bad economic model. Time we went industrial.(Saudi Arabia has just unveiled a big diversification plan. Yes...the rich have to start working for their cash too...)

this is rather shameful coming from Okupe

wouldnt it be wiser that you ask for a salary review instead cutting down labour

with the growing unemployment and an buffoon like okupe still reasoning with his anus.

shame.

This is a silly assumption. While it is true that they're being over-staffed, this is noticeable because they do not want to think outside the box. They are lazy and do not want to do anything worthwhile apart from their job description. There are unemployed people who are ready to go the extra mile and make their outfits more effective. He should have said the workers with low output should be put on probation. This statement is careless.

I condemn Doyin for this rubbish, but you cannot always bring Gej into every matters. PDP misruled Nigeria for 16 years, the same Obj you see as your demigod wasted 8 out of the 16 but you all hate Gej and anything Southsouth.

For your info, 70% of the people that contributed to the PDP 16 years misrule are now in apc.

Most states have a bloated civil service. Personally, If l happen to be a civil servant I will prefer the government relinquishing my appointment after paying me off appropriately. There are so many ventures that l can invest in with very certain good returns that will outstrip my monthly salary and also get to pay others salaries! No matter how distorted the economy looks, there are so many opportunities waiting to be explored!

Why can't he suggest that the lawmakers salary and other numerous allowances should be cut drastically. So many of his ilks are stashing billions away and flaunting their wealth in our faces, all he sees is how to inflict hardship on poor citizens earning peanuts. May God punish these heartless people.
