No doubt, it is imperative for governors to prune their workforce, but rather than adduce it to cash crunch, the FG and the governors should state it as is-the unreasonableness of labour unions to propose a minimum wage of 56K, knowing full well that the civil service is over-bloated, revenues are down and most state even find it extremely difficult to pay wages currently.

Then again, I would disagree with Okupe when he proposed an upfront salary payment of 3yrs before a civil servant that is surplus to requirement is laid off. How unintelligent that is. Just as it is done in the private sector, you would be gracious enough to pay 6 months salary in advance when laying off staff as a result of bankruptcy -because most states are actually bankrupt!

Governments have responsibility for the security and the welfare of its citizens, and if it then happens that the needs of less than 10% of the citizens (which constitutes its workforce) would inhibit it from its primary responsibility, then it has to do the needful, however painful.

I have honestly had to wonder how someone would stay on a job without salary for months, yet still commit to doing such jobs while praying/agitating to be paid piecemeal. Goes to show that quite a bunch of these fellas have no job descriptions.

No government needs to negotiate on this. Just fire them all so you can free up resources that can be deployed to the greater good of the majority!

Dont you think salary reduction is better.
Re: Okupe Urges Governors To Sack Workers Over Cash Crunch by Nobody: 10:04am On May 03, 2016
I am damn too sure, if most of the civil servants are offered 3 yrs salary and asked to resign they will joyfully do it. Its better to see millions in your account and use it for entrepreneurial schemes than a lazy 9-5 thing called a job.

I agree with him that there are excesses but I think the system should be redefined/ reshuffled first then the extras can be laid off 'provided' the pay is instant. I bet u, if the option is thrown open 'with assurances' of getting the pay, many will voluntarily resign.

I am with Okupe on this one, especially considering the economic downturn the country's currently experiencing. How can you rationalize a situation whereby less than 10% of a state's population (civil servants) takes over 90% of the allocation due to such states?? These are workers who pretty do NOTHING! Fact is that even most of the few states that aren't owing workers are actually borrowing from banks to meet up coz virtually all the states have debt profiles, just that some have maxed-out their borrowing privileges.
If civil servants constitute 10% of the population as you claim, do you know how many people's financial needs they cater to? One single civil servant may have up to 5 to 10 dependents, including aged parents and cousins. So next time you are tempted to parrot 10%, you should know that it's misleading and mischievous.

I knew it; and I said it: now I have been vindicated.

Knew that clueless ex president was planning on downsizing the workforce had he been re-elected. His promise of creating two million jobs was just a mere political statement. They're complaining that the civil service is over bloated yet they robbed the country blind, deaf and dumb.

This Okupe is just a foolish man, why can't he keep quiet for once, enn, all the governors are living a flamboyant life in their different state houses, yet they cannot pay their state workers, all the state house of assembly are smiling to the bank and feeding fat on the expense of their state workers yet this foolish man is saying they should sack them, the innocent workers that drive the economy, working for long hours from 8am to 4pm after being pay peanut

Okupe wants to create a group of jobless people like himself but the devil is a lier. His party lost an election purely because of warped ideology such as this. Instead of asking political office holders to give up a small percentage of perks and reduce stealing in the spirit of national sacrifice, he is recommending that those in coma should be clubbed to death - just to sustain the comfort of the few. Nigerians are saying a capital No! Strike like if you agree with me, and share if you agree with fat Okupe.

In a way....that is true. PDP spent 16 years in power....during which time they spent billions on power supply....and all we have now is 5000MW (On a good day).

PDP also should have saved under GEJ. But even if GEJ had saved everything....at best that gives us $100bn in savings. Which is good enough for two years.(Saudi Arabia had $724bn in savings at the start of the oil drop. Now...over 124bn of that has gone. And worse still....Saudi estimates that they have two years of good times left...before they start tightening belts.).

If there is any lesson to be learnt from this...it is the fact that relying on proceeds from selling resources is a bad economic model. Time we went industrial.(Saudi Arabia has just unveiled a big diversification plan. Yes...the rich have to start working for their cash too...)
I'm going to Ask you a simple question from and Engineer's point of view,

10% is too much sef under 5% of labourr force are govt payroll. Except via corruption which sadly is their stock in trade they can't take care of themselves let alone support others. Let govt do the needful sack 50% of them with adequate compensations. That way they can be productive and engage those cousins and other dependents of theirs in meaningful ventures!

In reality, govt is not suppose to be the main employer of labour but, the stimuli! Private sector is the koko. Over bloated civil service is corruption in every sense of it.

Why can't he suggest that the lawmakers salary and other numerous allowances should be cut drastically. So many of his ilks are stashing billions away and flaunting their wealth in our faces, all he sees is how to inflict hardship on poor citizens earning peanuts. May God punish these heartless people.

He recommended a three year salary upfront to those who might be affected.
Truth is, some of these people in the civil service do nothing.

He was talking about downsizing those who make the service over bloated.

People have suggested the slash for lawmakers in the past.
Him saying it would amount to repetition.

This is a new line of thought.
No food for lazy man. Simple.
