Borno state Governor, Hon Kashim Shettima has on Tuesday, May 17, presented cheques to 2 female graduates who emerged as overall best students out of 37, 259 graduating students of the University of Maiduguri at the just concluded 22nd combined convocation to study Msc in the United Kindom.


Borno state Commissioner for Higher education, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Jaha said the presentation of cheques is based on the pledge made by the Governor to sponsor the 2 overall best students (indigenes of Borno state) to further their studies in some of the world's best Universities.

The Commissioner enumerated that Fatima Zakari Abatcha is a first class student of the Department of Computer Engineering who also emerged as the overall best graduating student of the University during last combined convocation while Ramatu Mustapha Goni is also a first class student of the Department of Geology who came second to Fatima Abatcha with just a tiny difference of 0.01 GPA.


Fatima Zakari Abatcha who is proceeding to Bradford University to study Msc in Computer Engineering got the sum of N7,129,200.00 and Ramatu Mustapha Goni who will study Msc in Petroleum & Geoscience Exploration got the sum of N11,450,000.00 as tuition fee while Gov. Shettima on his own part, pledges to personally shoulder their upkeep throughout the duration of their study and instantly gave an undisclosed amount to both in line with his pledge.

The presentation was made during a courtesy call to the Governor by 29 female Part 2 going to 3 medical students of the National University of Sudan who are being sponsored by the Borno state government to study medicine, whom the Commissioner said, have all successfully passed their examination.


While addressing the prospective Msc students and medical students on attachment, Gov. Shettima congratulated them for performing excellently well in their studies and emphasis that his administration attaches great deal of premium to girl-child education.

"If you educate a man, you have educate an individual and if you educate girl, you have educated a nation. Women form the basis of any civilization, they form the fulcrum of every family and educating the girl-child is key in our quest to reposition our society especially in the area of medicine and medical sciences in general."he said.

He said the state government had just approved the sum of 238 million Naira for the medical students to enable them settle their tuition fee, cost of living and medical allowances for the whole year and promised to visit them in Sudan very soon.
The 29 medical students were in Maiduguri to undergo a 2 month compulsory hospital attachment while the remaining 31 students who study in Elrazi University are yet to arrive.
