The teacher who described the activities of the beggars as a social nuisance, said they are now becoming security threat to the state. Another resident, who pleaded anonymity, noted that even though it is good to give to the needy, alms begging should not be encouraged, stating that the boldness with which the beggars pounce on passersby is becoming worrisome. He said that although Owerri, just like every other city has sizable number of beggars, he warned that the sudden upsurge in the number of beggars calls for concern. “Given the security situation in the country, it is not out of place to raise alarm over the influx of Hausa into Owerri, we want the security agents to take note of this and safegaurd the lives and property of Owerri residents,” he stated.
