Obasanjo blames oil companies for Nigeria’s electricity crisis by solar2005(m): 6:51pm On May 26, 2016
Nigeria’s ex-president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that the refusal of international oil companies, IOCs, to convert to power the gas they were flaring contributed to the deteriorated state of electricity in the country. Obasanjo lamented that rather than building power plants for Nigerians to benefit, the IOCs preferred to burn the gas because such projects did not add to their profitability.

Obasanjo made this revelation at a high-level session on “Africa’s, Energy: What’s the New Deal?” at the ongoing 2016 annual meetings of African Development Bank, AfDB, in Lusaka, Zambia. “When I was president, I asked all the international oil companies producing crude oil in Nigeria not to burn gas and use it for electricity, only Agip responded and build a power plant of only three megawatts, the others ignored my call,” he said.

He shud have put laws in place dat bars flaring and ensure they built compressor stations and power plants...
Imagine d whole of Niger Delta, only agip has a functional turbine with 3MW, our leaders really failed us, same oil we have dat states like texas has, the difference is clear!
Why has our oil brought us death, darkness, pain dis unity, and so much other evil vices.
When we hard the groundnut pyramids, coco, cotten and other Agro allied ventures, we were better.
May God help the black race, God help Nigeria.

The old Fool again.

The current standard practise is to reinject the gas back into the well rather than burn it off when it is not being harnessed.

What did Obasanjo do back in 1977 and his tenure starting from 1999?

Fact remains that the monumental degradation of the Niger Delta ecologic and environment was due to irresponsible operations by oil companies all due to the lack of govt regulation as regards to the environment.

Obasanjo you of all people should shut up

How can oil companies build power stations when privatisation in the power sector only recently occurred during the last administration of GEJ?

Obasanjo is a liar.

Oil companies are licenced to drill for crude only and none of them was awarded any licence to build and operate power plants.

Is this the excuse the chimpanzee of Otta is now giving for his dismal power reforms which saw well over $15bn vanish into thin air without a single wattage added to the National grid?

Only a fool will take this baboon seriously.

As we can see he isn't bothered by the nearly 50yrs of unabated and indiscriminate gas flaring that has seriously affected the environment in the Niger Delta but rather he is more interested in oil companies utilising the gas for power plants where he neither granted or pushed for private sector participation in the energy sector.

I believe we should be voting oil company executives rather than political parties and politicians since oil companies are expected to do the job of the govt.

Obasanjo you remain a bloody liar and thief.

A situation where state governments where prevented from building and operating power stations during the Obasanjo era as can be seen with the floating power station commissioned by Tinubu and that of Rivers that have since been liquidated, how can anyone be expected to believe this crass nonsense from Obasanjo?

The fact remains there was no legal backing to Obasanjo's advice or order to oil companies to build gas thermal power stations.

Aside utilising the flared gas for power production, why did Obasanjo not push for a policy towards commercialising local domestic gas usage in place of kerosene?

Why was LNG given exclusive rights to exploit and market liquefied gas barring oil companies from doing same?

Obasanjo is by far one of the worst things to happen to Nigeria second only after the dullard currently in Aso Rock.

These military thugs had no business whatsoever heading this nation.

When those put in the position of trust and responsibility are only interested in filling up the vault of secret offshore vaults, decisions will always be at the expense of the country.
do not give them oil blocks then.

I blame all of them for not instituting, not legislating, not promulgating the no flaring policy.

We flare so much in this country, what is ought to be converted to electricity is converted to flames.

Nigeria is such a very funny country, we flare more than 90% of our gas production and yet, cooking gas still remains very expensive and not what an average household can convieniently afford.
