7 new Earth-like exoplanets discovered, NASA announces

Talk about lucky number seven. Astronomers have discovered not one, not two, but seven Earth-sized planets orbiting a star called TRAPPIST-1.

What’s more, three of them are in the habitable zone— the happy place where liquid water can exist on the surface of rocky planets, as it’s not too hot or cold. (Although liquid water could potentially exist on any of the seven, NASA said, it likes the odds on those three best.) The space agency calls the discovery of the fascinating solar system record-breaking.

“The discovery gives us a hint that finding a second Earth is not just a matter of if, but when,” Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters, said at a news conference announcing the discovery.

Zurbuchen called it a "major step forward" towards the goal of answering the very big question: Is there life on other worlds?

The discovery "is very promising for the search for life beyond our solar system,” Michael Gillon, astronomer at the University of Liege in Belgium, added during the press conference.

This is the first time astronomers have found so many Earth-sized planets circling the same sun.
The three planets in the habitable zone, also known as the Goldilocks Zone, are called TRAPPIST-1e, f, and g. Exoplanet “e” is about the same size as Earth and even gets around the same amount of star light as we do.

Scientists already knew of thousands of planets beyond our own solar system.

All told, the tally of confirmed exoplanets stood at 3,449 on Wednesday. But only a small number of discovered exoplanets meet the criteria for being possible Earths-- Earth-sized planets that are not too big, and in the habitable zone of a star.

While this discovery was made using the Spitzer Space Telescope, one of the most important instruments in the search for other planets is the Kepler Space Telescope, which is credited with 2,331 confirmed exoplanet discoveries. It uses a technique called the transit method, watching for a star to dim when a planet passes in front of the distant sun. About 74 percent of known exoplanets have been discovered using that method, according to NASA.

Exoplanet discoveries just keep coming.

Earlier this month, astronomers announced that they had evidence of perhaps as many as 114 new exoplanets; the data they used to find those came from Hawaii’s Keck Observatory, which made observations of over 1,600 stars for over two decades. One of those newly-discovered planets that has garnered attention is a hot, rocky “super Earth” called Gliese 411b.

Scientists have even discovered a planet orbiting the closest star to Earth, aside from the sun. Called Proxima b, that planet is somewhat larger than our own planet and lies about four light years away— close by cosmic standards but still incredibly far away from a human perspective. (One light year— the distance light can travel in one Earth year— equals almost 6 trillion miles.) The important Proxima b discovery was announced last August.

there are trillions of galaxies in this universe each with billions of planetary star systems. Even if 1% of this gargantuan number has a planet in the Goldilocks zone (meaning an ideal orbit around the sun like our own Earth, suitably located for having the ingredients for potential life to exist) then that would mean billions of planets that could harbor life. Out of these, even if a fraction of such planets had advanced intelligent life, then there could be more advanced civilizations partying around the universe than all the grains of sand on earth!!

The universe as per scientific theory is about 15 billion years old. Our own Solar System came into being just about 3.5 billion years ago. There naturally would be star systems that came into existence millions if not billions of years before the formation of the Solar System. What does that mean? There could therefore be extremely advanced cultures millions of years ahead of us in technology which would seem magic to us. And for them, roaming the universe would be like taking a walk in the park!

Then there’s the Kardashev scale which was originally designed in 1964 by the Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev (who was looking for signs of extraterrestrial life within cosmic signals). It has 3 base classes, each with an energy disposal level:
Type I (10¹⁶W),
Type II (10²⁶W), and
Type III (10³⁶W).

A Type I designation is given to species who have been able to harness all the energy that is available from their star, gathering and storing it to meet the energy demands of a growing population. This means that we would need to boost our current energy production over 100,000 times to reach this status!

However, being able to harness all Earth’s energy would also mean that we could have control over all natural forces. Human beings could then control volcanoes, the weather, and even earthquakes! (At least, that is the idea.) These kinds of feats are hard to believe, but compared to the advances of Type II and Type III civilizations, these are just basic and primitive levels of control (it’s absolutely nothing compared to the capabilities of societies with higher rankings).

Other astronomers have extended the scale to Type IV (10⁴⁶W) and Type V (the energy available to this kind of civilization would equal that of all energy available in not just our universe, but in all universes and in all time-lines). These additions consider both energy access as well as the amount of knowledge and hyper advanced technology these civilizations have access to. A point to ponder is whether the quasars we have discovered are actually space engineering being done by a Type III civilization?

but we Earthlings are not even at level 0.1 in the Kardashev scale!! Achieving a Type I status would probably take us a few thousand years more!

So, could they have visited earth some time in the past or even visiting us at present? That would remain a million dollar question until they land publicly for all of us to see

India starts working on its own Seaplane

As a deal to acquire amphibious plane US-2 from Japan seems to have stuck in a whirlpool, India has quietly started working to build its own Seaplane.

Government-owned HAL has taken a lead to design and develop the amphibian aircraft around its multi-role Do-228 aircraft which is considered the backbone of the Macy’s transport fleet.

The HAL has floated an RFI (Request For Information) seeking partnership for design and development of such an aircraft.

“Under Make in India initiative, HAL intends to design and develop a Seaplane version of HAL built Do-228 aircraft. Towards this, HAL-TAD Kanpur invites information, from reputed design agencies or manufacturers only, for consultancy or to partner in design and development of an HAL built Do-228 aircraft to a Seaplane version,” the RFI said.

“The HAL started working on the project in October 2015 ? a year after India and Japan announced negotiations on the US-2 ? when HAL quietly called the attention of global airframers and design houses,” defence news blog Livefist quoted sources in the company as saying.

Three aeronautical engineers from HAL’s Aircraft Research and Design Centre (ARDC) in Bengaluru presented a paper at the Aero India Seminar month titled ‘Conceptual Design of Amphibious Aircraft’.

The paper, offered what HAL described as ‘An optimized design approach addressing key features like hydrostatic stability, dynamic stability, wave handling, and water performance is conceptualised with due care for aerodynamic characteristics and overall performance figures, the report said.

A fleet of over 100 Do-228 aircraft currently fly with the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and Indian Coast Guard, with more on order. HAL is also set to unveil a civilian version of the aircraft later this year.

The disclosure about the project comes at time when the deal for US-2 amphibians is no where near to conclusion due to several issues, including the cost of the aircraft.

the thing is " respect begets respect "

it is universal be it in real life or in cyber space. and some of the posters forget this....... embarassed

also some people dont realize that technology/knowledge is a work in progress , it is not static

if today a country X has better technology, tomorrow a country Y will/may end up with better technology.
so whats the point in insulting and deriding the efforts of other countries ?

only these people ( except for self proclaimed defense experts grin ) can claim that a weapon system X is better than a weapon system Y

1.the end user (army air force navy........etc)

2.people who r part of the development, testing and evaluation team of the said weapon system and they still will be struggling to make a comparison unless backed by strong espionage effort in order to gain access to the weapon system against whom the comparison is to be made.

3.people who r proficient in evaluation of weapon system through their vast working experience spanning across multiple domains (a software guy involved in coding the algorithms for an RF seeker will have zero knowledge about the aerodynamical flight performance of the said weapon system etc etc ). such people r rare , and their evaluations r most of time classified for internal military use only.

lastly TRUTH is the first casualty when it comes to humans grin
and when it comes to cyber space the problem is only more ENDEMIC grin

funny thing about TRUTH is, that it is subjective depends on the viewer and is always influenced by the viewer grin

eg.

his most probable comment/view : she has a nice sexy legs

now one person A gets to get close with girl and he feels her all over
his comment : fuucck this is not a girl this is fuuking sexdoll grin grin grin grin

persons X, Y, Z r at best represent the behavior of the internet experts/fanboys /jignoistic trolls etc grin
person A represents the behavior of the person/people who has hands on experience and r in the loop regarding whatever their r concerned with. but then he/she themselves only know the truth but as usual it falls prey to the other versions of the truth .

moral of the whole narrative/essay plus the sexy story grin grin grin grin
be cool with ur opinion and importantly others opinion too, in real life our opinions in cyber space count shiit.
and therefor keep ur negative opinions about products/countries etc to urself becz it is a wastage of effort and a poor reflection on ur personal bearing.

Nationalized Spice.

yeah more or less grin

got input/hand holding from the Israelis , but guidance algorithms , propulsion , UAV grade miniaturized actuators etc will have to from the Indian side nobody will sell this.
its more of a Israeli consultancy input with the SPICE 250 as the base , especially the miniaturization of the various electronic components / LRUs etc

such consultancy usually results in 20-30 % degraded performance weapon being produced, when compared to the foreign weapon on which its is based / consultancy is derived from.same as the global trend to sell export variants of major weapon systems which have 20-30 % degraded performance than the original versions.

nobody wants to kill their golden egg laying goose , dont they grin
or beaten the crap out of themselves with their own designed and exported weapon grin

the main thing here is to learn /acquire the knowledge base inorder to leverage it in far better performance , up coming/upgraded variants or newer systems based on the same philosophy provided the initial weapon system is successful in the first place grin

The sophistication a civilization attains is directly tied to one major factor: Energy Capture (not the only factor though). And the primary source of energy in our solar system is our nearest star - our Sun.

Hoping to see mankind build a Dyson Sphere in my lifetime but realistically speaking I doubt if it will happen in the next 100 years. The scale of such an operation is humongous.

But never say never in science and tech. Who knows if AI will come to our rescue. About 80% of some Kurzweilian predictions in the last half century has been accomplished. Oh! The marvel of the Kardashev scale.

Image below is a representation of what the Japanese space agency aims to achieve. We may not be able at this point in our history to build structures round our Sun (Dyson Sphere) but we can capture solar energy in earth orbit, convert it into microwave and then beam it down to a receiver on earth. So the Japanese think. wink
