....Pledges to tap from Iranian diversification experience

By Levinus Nwabughiogu

ABUJA—President Muhammadu Buhari said, yesterday, in Abuja that Nigeria was now learning the ropes in diversification of its economy.
Speaking when he received a special envoy from the President of Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Javad Zarif, at State House, the President commended the Iranian government for working to launch itself among the developed nations of the world.

The President said his government was working assiduously to ameliorate the challenges faced by the Nigerian economy within a short period, saying he would tap from the experiences of countries like Iran which had thrived in adversity.

He said the Iranian economy remained an inspiration for Nigeria in the deployment of technology to harness and export gas, grow food for the populace and promote entrepreneurship in education.
The President noted that Nigeria had all the potentials to grow into a great economy through more inclusive planning, consistency in government policies and commitment to the realization of development targets.

“The progress made by Iran within a short period of 30 years is really commendable. Within the period, you have been able to harness gas flaring, and you are now exporting.

‘’You have recorded strides in security, manufacturing, agriculture and technology.
“You have also achieved a lot in nuclear research.
‘’I must also congratulate you for successfully negotiating with America and the European countries on the development of your nuclear energy.

“In Nigeria, we are learning. We are learning the hard way through hardship, and we are learning very quickly on how to explore other sectors of the economy like gas, solid minerals and agriculture for growth.

“We are grateful for your support and cooperation in opening up the Nigerian economy for diversification,” he said.

In his remark, the Iranian envoy, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs, said the Iranian government would support the ongoing restructuring of the Nigerian economy.
“We are very keen to see a better and stronger relationship with Nigeria, which is the largest country in Africa and a major global player,” he said.

Zarif said he came to Nigeria with a delegation of more than 70 members of the Iranian business community, who had already started discussions in investing in sectors as banking, education, scholarship, agriculture, energy, tourism and technology development.

But corruptions kill potentials

Very little kid. Shiit like this is beyond you. Go enlighten yourself a little about the worst regimes of US sanctions and embargo since World War II and read about the countries that best weathered the storm- just go do a little research about the Iranian economy and come back and type something useful.

Una go just carry religious bigotry for head like something else.

If our governments had done 1/10th of what Iranians did under US, EU and UN sanctions, we wouldn't have been in the mess we are today. If Nigeria is put under 1/100th of the sanctions Iran was put under until just about a year ago when they were lifted, she would cease to exist in just months!

Make una try sabi book abeg- no be crime.

Show me one evidence that Adesina s policies have been abandoned? The last time I checked, even local rice and wheat production is on the increase.

Buhari is a confused, clueless, ignorant, arrogant, illitrate and bigoted dictator who is unfit to lead a country like Nigeria. This evil government fails to realize that their id1otic comments and actions and inactions since they assumed power in 2015 put Nigeria in its present state. Where is the stable power, free feeding, N1 to $1, allowance for unemployed, youth and women schemes, 1.5million jobs etc promised by this evil government ?

You claimed the present govt couldnt at least sustain the gains of Adesina, I asked you to give me evidence of a decrease in rice production for example to back your allegation, now you are returning my question to me.

Fact is that more investors have recently come into the rice production business, anambra rice is expanding, ebonyi rice is expanding, the recent Lagos+Kebbi joint venture signed early this year has given a mega boost to rice production and the government recently bragged that Nigeria would comfortably meet its rice demand and stop all importation by early 2018. That doesnt seem to me like a situation which is on a decline.

That Nigeria's rice production is increasing does not mean that Nigeria has yet attained rice sufficiency. Nigeria still imports large part of the rice it consumes till date.. It takes forex to import rice and you know the price of the dollar today due to the oil saga. A smart person should be able to connect the dots and understand why the price of rice is higher today owing to the price of forex.

Back to our original discussion before you deviated to price of rice, we were talking of local rice production and you accused the present govt of not sustaining the gains of Adesina. Kindly throw more light into that allegation...

They are not following any policy. Am sure u did basic enough. The higher the demand, the higher the price. And the higher the supply, the lesser the price. So put that equation into the reason why the rice is expensive, then u see that u av been saying rubbish.

It is pointless arguing with someone who lacks basic understanding of anything but only just churns out words emotionally out of the abundance of his prejudiced heart. Apparently in your head, the demand for rice suddenly doubled or tripled overnight as soon as Buhari became president; or sorry, maybe you assume local rice production was totally stopped as soon as Buhari became president, hence the maintained high demand but low supply. Your peculiar wisdom does not think a more than 100% devaluation in the Naira has anything to do with inflation in price of rice (a commodity which Nigeria still imports massively). Mr Man, Kindly wallow in your ignorance... A further response wouldn't be necessary, you win!

The policies of this government are bad that's why a bag of rice is 18,000 to 20,000 compared to the 9,000 in the previous govt. There is no better explanation to this.
