Some dealers cant be trusted, so sincerely you are better off buying a used car yourself or getting a relative or friend abroad to buy the car privately for you and sending it to Nigeria.
I will never buy a used car from a dealer
Too many shoddy practices and one cannot tell the good from the bad until you are in it.

Nigerian roads are bad enough and cars are under immense pressure so you need a safe and solid car. unfortunately Not all dealers are interested in that but their own profit margins.

Wickedness is our birthright, it's inherent in us as Nigerians. I tell you.
When bible says : "the heart of man is desperately wicked...... " I believe it was referring to the Nigerian man
not necessarily a nigerian bro. Most poor people who desperately want to be rich develop a wicked heart because of their heart desires. Typical example yahoo boys!!! Economic hardship has made the average nigerian to embrace deception and sees it as a way to live. Mind you some could have money and still be poor mentally so they will still be wicked at heart.

Not just Nigerians my brother... Blacks in general .... As the colour of a black man is, it reflects the heart.... Blacks have a deadly wicked heart.... Very wicked, egocentric, greedy and self centered.... That's the reason why every black society looks like a pig farm. Nobody is concerned abut betterment of the society. But themselves ...

I do a lot of vehicle inspections every week and 18/20 are usually crap with tons of issues, the cost of fixing most of these cars to standard plus price of car when added will be more than the price of getting a toks.

Be fore investing in any car (toks or nigerian used) pay for a comprehensive inspection. It will save you a heart break. grin

And after you pay for the comprehensive inspection you find the car has a lot of issues , you move on to the next car and pay another fee for another comprehensive inspection , six months down the line you have paid a ton of cash on comprehensive inspection.

If your car get used in NIgeria daily for more than 6 months your suspension would be gone, there is no if and buts,
If you buy a ar and it was salvage then its your fault cos its free to check if a car was salvage or not
Used car abroad have mandatory road worthiness check yearly,if not you cannot drive it.In America there would be a sticker to as when the last service was and wen the nxt service would be,.The Toks has a clear way of checking its ingenuity on line almost free of charge.I cannot say same for the Nigerian used.If you are buying as the 2nd owner in Nigeria and the 1st owner bought brand new in Nigeria then,I think one might be lucky but you still need to check suspension.

Everybody here seem to be talking about suspension. I don't understand what the big deal is. If the suspension is gone, simply get a new one. It does not cost an arm and leg like the critical parts of a car (engine and gear)

Don't mind the op. He knows nothing about cars. Some good naira used cars are better than some toks . As for me, I use the required lubricant both for the engine and gear, I don't patronise a Kazen, and whenever there is any issue, I fix immediately. If I want to sell such car , would you say because it is a naija used I should give you the car for peanuts? People mostly sell cars to upgrade not for inability to fix faults. I have seen guys spend as much as 800k for car repair, some as much as 300k; depends on the type of car . I believe anyone who was able to buy a car should be able to fix it.

Meanwhile , some toks are marred with multiple problems as 99.9% of them are bought savaged . After which they would be minimally repaired , repainted and smuggled into Nigeria via Cotonoua where some gullible folks will buy them with huge amount of money in the name of buying a Tokunbo car. The price of a Honda accord 2005 model, for example , shipped directly from America, the least you can get a road worthy one is $5800, add shipment cost plus custom duty, at the end of the day, the car won't go less than 4 million naira. Compare that with what the car goes for in Cotonoua, which is is around 1.5 million ,then tell me why you think the difference is that huge. It is simply because the so called Tokunbo are actually dead cars shipped into third word countries . Now , if I wanna sell my car, shipped directly and still declared road worthy in the States , someone will come and offer me peanut because it is not a tokunbo ? I will always laugh at such a person and move on

Sir, you are not completely right about the prices tou quote both in naira and dollars. I am a car dealer and I buy tokunbo cars for people almost every week. This Honda 2005 full option costs less than 1.4m about two months ago. With all due respect, don't compare the Tokunbo cars in Cotonou to the remodeled accident tokunbo cars that litter Nigeria.

OP, your are extremely right. A close friend of mine and I, who I believe would be reading this thread have been checking Toyota Muscle for weeks, very frustrating. Good pictures you see online, but on getting to see the car, it has been nonsense all the way. From Iyana Ipaja, to Ogba, to Yaba. Jiji, olx etc. I have told him to add more money and let us buy toks.

Is it so difficult to place a ban on "fairly used" or "Tokunbo" cars and ensure Nigerians buy only new cars. This would save us the troubles of going through the rigors of buying and using Tokunbo cars. The beauty of these is that it will reduce the ever increasing numbers of cars in the country, again i don't see any sense in someone or a family having 3 to 5 cars. Well what do i know.

You know nothing.

You want to restrict low or middle income earners from buying affordable cars...have you taken a look at the prices of new cars in the market today, especially in light of high import duties and spiraling exchange rates?

I initially thought you were being sarcastic. I hope you got nowhere near real power, with this your anti-consumer stance.

Solution buy a Brand new car.

Real life example: a lady bought a nigerian used kia rio 2014 @ 1m naira, she thought it was a good deal, she brought it in for servicing/a.c was no as cold as it should be. After inspection, a.c components were found to be parts of a different car. Parts replaced for a.c Brand new compressor, condenser, pipes, gas and labour charges. Total ~230k.

Next car started overheating. Car was checked, and discovered it had a history of overheating, head gasket had been changed previously, cylinder head wrapped. Solution replace engine, cost total cost plus labour 600k. All this happened within 1 month ow ownership.

It would take me less than 60secs to identify these faults.

I'm sure the lady in question would not mind paying for 10 inspections instead of paying for the repairs for that car.

I can't recall how many inspections I've done for one person just because we were looking for a good used car. A particular client called me to find a 2007 Honda accord, 3 month down the line, I've not found a unit that fits our taste due to some issues with the cars and dishonestly on the part of the sellers.

1. Last week, I went to inspect a unit of Honda accord, 2006 model, it lookd clean from inside and outside. Seller came and started his lie that he bought it less than 6 months and its brand new. But he is selling cos he got a 2014 model (a huge lie) I looked at the odometer and it read 153k miles ran a scan and other diagnosis discovered Front ABS were severed from the wheels and an O2 sensor was malfunctioning. Asked for price and seller said. 1.8m last. I laughed and went away disgusted.

2. I was looking for an Avalon 02-04 model, I met someone willing to sell his black 03 Avalon, it was obviously resprayed, he said his car has served him and has not broken down, he takes it to a company to service, I asked him if there's any fault he said NO single fault, I started inspection, tear on drivers upholstery, scan revealed 23 faults, including Knock sensor bank 2, AF sensor bank 1 and 2, cat below threshold bank 1 and 2, MAP an IAT sensor, and solenoid E electrical malfunctions. I asked his best price, he said 1.5m. I kept mute. Unplugged my scanner and went away. SMH for some car repair/maintenance company.

3. A lot of Abuja dealers now roll back odometers, and destroy all forms of registration details about the car, they do this with fraudulent VIO and FRSC officers, they now sell these cars as tokunbo.

A lot of evil are going on in car sales one need to thoroughly investigate a car before he/she buys casket.

Forget it, checked both cars yesterday and they are rusted, the infiniti is already falling apart. The caretaker said will give me recent price when the welder working on it has finished work. Those cars aren't even that good for scraps. My mechanic friends says buying any of the two is like "using a sieve to fetch water in a basket" but if you are still interested send a number so when the welder is through I will hola you.
