The Great Grevy's Rally, Kenya

These are Kenyan citizen-scientists at work. The Kenya Wildlife Service’s Grevy’s Zebra Technical Committee in 2016 recommended carrying out a Sight-Resight analysis by amassing a large number of citizen volunteers to drive throughout the Grevy’s zebra range, taking pictures on two successive days and then using the newly developed IBEIS software (4.5) to identify and match individual zebras. The Over 500 Kenyans took over 100,000 zebra images that were then analyzed in conjunction with Princeton University. The cameras are GPS fitted. Analysis showed there was a population of 2350 Grevys, and thats 99 % of all living Grevys in the planet.

The next repeat event is in three weeks time in 4 counties and adventure-loving Kenyans are free to join in the scientific fun.

The Great Northern Aerial Mammal Census in 2017

This was an aerial census of all Giant mammal species in the northern parts of Kenya. The previous one was in 2012 and there will be another in 5 years.
