– The US urged The Buhari administration to work towards improving lives of people in the Niger Delta

– David Young who is a US envoy visited Bayelsa and called for dialogue

– He said the US was working with Nigeria to make the Niger Delta region a better place.

The United States has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to improve the lives of those living in the Niger Delta region.
This was made known by Ambassador David Young who is the deputy head of mission of the United States Embassy in Nigeria during a courtesy visit to Governor Henry Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa at the state house.

Daily Post reports that the envoy also sent a message to militants in the Niger Delta region to embrace dialogue as a way of achieving lasting solution to the problem in the region.

Young also noted that successive government made effort to better the lives of people in the region and called on all stakeholders to work towards achieving this.

He said the “US government was ready to partner with Nigeria and Bayelsa state in the area of funding development and economic prosperity, through a variety of programmes, including agriculture, health, education and maritime security, without losing focus on transparency and fiscal responsibility.”

He said: “The US government feels very strongly that all stakeholders should be engaged in dialogue, as part of the process to arrive at equitable and fair solution for all involved.

“We believe that a bit of challenge for Nigeria, is to transform the region of oil wells (the Niger Delta) into improvement in the life of the average Deltan. And, that is something we feel very strongly about.

“We encourage Nigerians to work for common goals as against violence and criminal activities. We encourage Nigeria to establish conditions and mechanisms for lasting change over time and provide economic opportunities and services for Deltans… US provides assistance to the region, through maritime security training, aviation security, treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS, good governance planning, agric system and a number of other activities. So we want to be your partner.”

Governor Dickson lamented the degradation in the region and urged troops deployed to the region to exercise caution.
He said only meaningful dialogue can end the problem of militancy and also development.
He however applauded the federal government for kick-starting the Ogoniland Clean-Up Programme and called for its extension to other parts of the region, stressing that Bayelsa environment remains the most polluted in the Niger Delta.

He said: “We believe that the issues of the Niger Delta are not such that can be resolved by means of confrontation or show of military strength. We believe that these are essentially issues of development; they are issues about the environment.

“So, we as a government, community leaders, corporate executives particularly the oil majors that are operating here and the Federal Government, its agencies and the friends of our country should work together to resolve the challenges of the Niger Delta.

“These are issues that working together sincerely and following a clear roadmap, we think can be resolved in such a way that communities will be prosperous; Government, agencies and businesses within our region will benefit from the overall climate of stability and security that will be generated when there is a consensus building effort. That is where we stand and I believe that has been the position of the US Mission.”

Good suggestion but the clown president will not listen after causing recession for Nigeria twice as military and civilian president.

He is blaming past government for his bad leadership style

And how much have been spent on Abuja Lagos plus other states. It should certainly be annoying to you if someone enriches himself with your wealth and then queries you on what you have done with the little he left you.
Stop coveting their resource. Hands off their oil to them. Let them drink it if they so choose.

After taxes, allocations, derivations, NDDC and so on, nothing to show in the Delta and on top of that, ND is the largest debtor state in Nigeria with N700 billion debt.

The people of the delta sat like dummies while their leaders loot them dry and sank them in debt, they did not lift a finger, but just like the other lazy states in that region including the SE, they want the FG to tie their shoes for them and give their looting and stealing leaders more money to loot...

While the US rep. called the shenanigans as criminal and violence, you hardly ever hear Dickson call it. He won't just call it. All he's paid to say is to condemn military exercise. i dare him to deny complicity. for all tiny little militants who care to listen, the US rep. visits to bayelsa is pregnant. Any further attacks after this sincere call for dialogue,is an invitation for crocodile to smile at them. fat ass lazy bones.

Seriously? What was Niger Delta like during Jonathan's administration? A utopia? Jonathan had the power to transform that whole region but he didn't. He even didn't transform his community! Most politicians in Nigeria are bad, selfish, greedy and heartless. They line their pockets with ill-gotten wealth while the ordinary man suffers.

Afonjas are free to keep deceiving themselves when the rest of the world are uncomfortable with Nigeria especially Buhari's government.

First it was a congressman asking Kerry not to supply arms

Second an ex congressman asking for referendum

Third, UN said Nigeria is deeply divided.

Now, a US diplomatic envoy asking Buhari to dialogue and address ND.

When will Afonjas take the handwriting on the wall serious before they end up like Bosnians cool

No. How can they demand for the development of the region? Isn't it more beneficial to sell guns/war machines to kill them all? Afterall, if they are all dead no one will be there to continue the agitation. It is cheaper to fund war than to develop the water logged region. Such money is better spent on the proposed NE Development Commission. You'll all regret having the curse called oil on your backyards. Better allow free access to it or face the Sheriff. Operation crocodile smile upon you.

EDITED: Sarcasm.

we want resource control...

All leaders in Nigeria are distracted to stealing because of our structure...

And may I ask you how much your own governors and Nigeria as a whole has received as a nation and what the monies have been used for...Our leaders would remain same irrespective of their zones until their is a change in structure to ensure they work to better the lives of the masses.....

13% derivation, NDDC, ministry of Niger Delta

If they want they should stop all this extra allocations so that the FG will be responsible for the development of Niger Delta... then we can blame FG

How can NDDC have nothing to show for over 2.5 trillion it has received

Most Niger Delta state has nothing to show for there 13% derivative cash

I don't see any other thing the FG should do because the Niger Delta is currently getting over 45% of oil revenue

Dialogue remains the best option. I think our leaders especially our president and governor's should be having seminars on leadership. Every governor should also be made to enrol in Lagos buisnes school. Most of these people only know how to campaign but can't lead.

And how much has been spent on your unproductive states? Yes, how much of SS oil revenue has been allocated to your parasitic states in the last 50 years.

The entire country has fed fat on ND for since 1960 and now that the US wants to help in improving the lives of Niger Deltans you think it necessary to b!tch about it. Is it with your money they're fund whatever projects they will carry out in the ND? Abeg carry your bad belle go.

Y'all can't even stay alone. That's why you are all scared of secession or True Federalism. Wicked people.
