A Supreme Court in Nigeria recently brushed aside a tradition that gives the male child of a deceased man the full right to inherit his property. The judge's reason being that the custom is discriminatory. (https://www.nairaland.com/3396085/supreme-court-upholds-right-female) Please if discrimination based on gender is a valid reason to set aside a valid and well recognised custom, then I think payment of bride price should either be outlawed or the man will pay bride price, while the woman will pay groom price. The first point made sense ....however in a country where tradition and points of view are still exercised and practiced from a patriarchal angle little will change. Change does not come easily or quickly to these lands. |
