Tokunboh Ajayi

Tokunbo joined the pantheon of revered newscasters and broadcasters on her own merit at the NTA Network News Headquarters in Lagos before the group was moved to Abuja. She earned her respect among the notable newscasters of the time. The group had the velvet voice of Cyril Stober, the sandpaper sharp Siene Allwell Brown, the sweet and solemn voices of Ruth Benemesia Opiah, Lola Ogunbambi and Eugenia Abu, and the soulful John Momoh. It was an enviable cast and the best in a very long time. It was always a luxury to have two of them read the news at 9:00 p.m. which made many to still stay tuned even when the NTA has lost its credibility and daily dole out lies and propaganda for the dictatorship of the lowlife, Ibrahim Babangida. The group put a brave face to the work and many of them showed their displeasure in their attitude to the lies and worthless information Ibrahim Babangida was getting out through them at the Network News.

Tokunbo Ajai died in London, England on August 18, 2000. She was 37 years old.

Lagbaja (born Bisade Ologunde in Lagos) is a Nigerian Afrobeat musician.

Though the concept was developed long before that, his first album (entitled Lagbaja) was released to national acclaim in 1993. Over the years and more albums later, the music continues to fascinate with its unique focus on a core of African drums. His music is a product of various influences ranging from traditional Yoruba music to Jazz. Often the music is purely instrumental- an interplay between traditional Yoruba percussions, drums, chants, and western instruments, especially the saxophone. When there are lyrics, they are primarily sung in Yoruba, English or a blend of the two as is colloquially spoken in Yoruba cities. Many of his songs dwell on serious social issues, while others simply entertain. Some are dance inducing while others pass serious messages in humorous ways.
One thing that links all the songs together is his use of traditional African drums. Traditional Yoruba drums are the most prominent. Four families of these drums are employed in creating different grooves and moods. The dundun/gangan family is the most prominent and at times up to five drummers combine all the various components to create the polyrhythms. The bata ensemble is led by two musicians who alternate between soft high toned driving rhythms with their omele bata, and thunderous loud talk with their mum drum- iya ilu. The general percussionist leads the sakara ensemble. The fourth family, used as the backbone of the groove is the ogido, a derivative of the ancient gbedu. The ensemble of drummers constitute the larger part of the band. Vocalists and western instrumentalists make up the rest. Lagbaja’s groovy fusion has been referred to as afrojazz, afrobeat, higherlife and afropop until now that he himself has christened the music AFRICANO, alluding mostly to the central role of African drums and grooves in his music.
In March 1997, Lagbaja established his club, Motherlan’ in the heart of Ikeja in Lagos. Motherlan’s design is influenced by the traditional African town or market square, where people gather under the moonlight for ceremonies and artistic events like dance, music, story telling, wrestling etc. Now rumor has it that Lagbaja has put Motherland up for sale.

Shola is an astute chef whose cuisine is a summation of classical training, travel and an ongoing education focused on extracting flavor from the best ingredients. It is not solely based on procuring the most expensive or esoteric items but rather a synergy of products with a quality index that speaks to the final preparations.

While he considers his cooking to be modern American due to various influences, the use of the word modern refers to borrowing flavors and techniques from several ethnic influences as opposed to a non transparent use of multiple chemicals that may require a leap of faith.

Shola is available to cater private dinner or cocktail parties in private homes for parties up to 24 in Philadelphia and New York City. Larger events can be arranged with advanced notice,  After stints at Deux Cheminées and Le Bec-Fin, Shola began accumulating his trade’s tools in his incredibly organized home kitchen. “It’s important for me to see everything that I’m working with — all the plate ware arranged neatly, all the spices on one rack. He fled Nigeria in 2000, and made claim for asylum on the grounds of religious persecution, but his application was rejected due to insufficient evidence he had personally suffered persecution. [1] He gained residency in Ireland under the Irish Born Child scheme (since repealed).
He and his family settled in County Laois. In 2004, he was elected as a city councilor in local elections. In June 2007 he was elected as mayor of Portlaoise Town Council (9 members), with support from Fine Gael (2 seats) and Sinn Féin (1 seat).[2]

Frederick Rotimi Alade Williams

Frederick Rotimi Alade Williams, QC, SAN (1920-2005) was a prominent Nigerian lawyer who was the first Nigerian to become a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.[1] In the 1950s, he was a member of the Action Group and subsequently became the minister for local government and Justice. He was the president of the Nigerian Bar Association in 1959, the association is the leading body for lawyers in the country. He left politics in the 1960s, as a result of the political crisis in the Western Region of Nigeria.
Throughout his career, he was involved in some memorable and important court cases, such as Lakanmi vs the Western Government of Nigeria, which set the precedent that a military government could not use its power to make laws that will appropriate an individuals property. [2] He was also among a group of lawyers that represented the Oba of Lagos, Adeniji Adele against challenges by the Nigerian National Democratic Party. The latter had earlier gained solidarity and foundation from the ruling House of Docemo, in Lagos.

Mutiu Adepoju (born December 22, 1970 in Ibadan) is a former Nigerian footballer, who played mostly as an attacking midfielder.
Nicknamed "The Headmaster", he played most of his career in Spain, and represented his country in three FIFA World Cups.

Adepoju (also called by his first name in Spain) left Nigeria in 1989 to join Real Madrid, but never made it past its B side. His first professional season was impressive, as he netted 11 league goals to help Racing de Santander return to the topflight, and he continue to feature and score regularly for the Cantabrians in the next three seasons.
Mutiu left for Real Sociedad, a larger club, in 1996-97 but, after a solid first campaign, struggled mightily to hold down a regular place with the Basque team. In 2001-02, he represented Saudia Arabia's Al-Ittihad (Jeddah), but quickly returned to Spain, playing an unimpressive season with second level side UD Salamanca.
After two more weak years, in Turkey and Cyprus, Adepoju retired in 2006, in Spain's lower leagues.

Mutiu was a member of the Nigerian team that played in the 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship. His brace against the USA in the semifinals ensured a final against star-studded Portugal, in a 0-2 defeat.
He went on to collect 54 international full caps, with five goals. He made his debut against Togo in August 1990, but his breakthrough at international level came during the 1992 African Nations Cup, and he helped his nation win the next continental edition.
Adepoju was part of the squads for the World Cups in 1994, 1998 - scoring in a 3-2 win against Spain - and 2002 (although he did not play in the latter tournament).

Antonio Fernandez

The billionaire African diplomat Antonio Deinde Fernandez has already spent more than £200,000 transforming his seven-storey townhouse by applying 1,000 books of gold leaf to the ornate cornicing and balusters.

The Central African Republic’s ambassador to the United Nations travels across the world in one of six private jets and enjoys being chauffeured around in a pink Rolls-Royce. When dining out, he takes over the entire restaurants to avoid encountering riffraff. A Yoruba tribal chief, his family motto is "agbomeji kii momi nikoto", meaning "two rams cannot drink from the same bucket".  He is a proud member of the ogboni fraternity.

Now the flamboyant Nigerian has astonished neighbours by asking for - and being granted - permission to build an orangery in his back garden. In his native Lagos Island, he has built a tower named after himself.

Alongside business interests, Ambassador Fernandez has a diplomatic career stretching back to 1966 and is the Central African Republic’s UN representative. He is on first-name terms with several world leaders, doubles as the republic’s deputy minister of foreign affairs, and is head of the oil company Petro-Inett.

But his career has not been without controversy. The ambassador has a long track record of unconventional business deals in Africa and is said to have made powerful enemies. In 1989, he tried, unsuccessfully, to use his diplomatic immunity to prevent his former American wife from being awarded title to the couple’s £4 million estate in New York as part of a divorce settlement.

The wrangle went as far as the Oval Office, with former President George Bush being briefed on the appeal.

Olusegun Obasanjo

With Laura Bush

Ọbasanjọ was born in Ogun State,[3] grew up in Owu (Abeokuta), and he enlisted in the Nigerian Army in 1958. His name, Olusegun, means "The Lord has vanquished" [4]. He trained at Aldershot, was commissioned as an officer, and fought against the Biafran secessionists in the Nigerian Civil War. Although he did not directly participate in the military coup of 29 July 1975, led by Murtala Mohammed, he supported it and was named Murtala's deputy in the new government.

Obasanjo in 1978

With US President Jimmy Carter in Lagos, 1978
As chief of staff of Supreme Headquarters, Obasanjo sought advice from Rogerlay of Akobi and thus had the support of the military. He had earlier commanded the 3 Marine Commando Division of the federal army that took Owerri, effectively bringing an end to the civil war. His previous military service included 1 Area Command in Kaduna and acting as Chief Army Engineer, then commander of 2 Area Command from July 1967, which was redesignated 2 Division Rear, and then the Ibadan Garrison Organisation.[5] On 13 February 1976, he was marked for assassination along with Murtala and other senior military personnel by coup plotters, lead by Army Col. Dimka. Although Murtala was killed during the attempted coup, Obasanjo escaped death as another officer's vehilce was mistaken for his. The low profile security policy adopted by Murtala in guarding very important persons allowed the plotters easy access to their targets. The coup was foiled because the plotters missed Obasanjo and General Theophilus Danjuma, chief of army staff and de facto number three man in the country. The plotters also failed to monopolize communications, although they were able to take over the radio station to announce the coup attempt. Obasanjo and Danjuma were able to establish a chain of command and re-established security in Lagos, thereby regaining control. Obasanjo was made head of state in a meeting of the Supreme Military Council. Keeping the chain of command established by Murtala Muhammad in place, Obasanjo pledged to continue the programme for the restoration of civilian government in 1979 and to carry forward the reform programme to improve the quality of public service.
The second republican constitution, which was adopted in 1979, was modelled on the Constitution of the United States, with provision for a President, Senate, and House of Representatives. The country was now ready for local elections, to be followed by national elections, that would return Nigeria to civilian rule.

Obasanjo's first wife, Mrs. Oluremi (Remi) Obasanjo is the mother of his oldest children, the most well-known being Dr. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, a Senator of Ogun State.
On 23 October 2005 the President lost his wife, Stella Obasanjo, First Lady of Nigeria the day after she had a tummy- tuck surgery in Spain. In 2009 the doctor only known as 'AM' was sentenced to one year in jail for negligence in Spain and ordered to pay restitution to her son of about $176,000.>[16] Obasanjo has many children, who live throughout Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States.[17]
Stella was not the first wife he lost. In 1987, his ex-wife Lynda was ordered out of her car by armed men, but was fatally shot for failing to move quickly

Chamillionaire

Hakeem Seriki (born November 28, 1979, in Houston, Texas) is an American, two time Grammy Award nominated rapper from the Acres Homes section of Houston, Texas. He is best known by his stage name, Chamillionaire (pronounced Ka-MIL-yin-air), but also uses nicknames such as The Mixtape Messiah, King Koopa, Color Changin' Lizard, Chamillinator, Chamillitary Mayne, and The Truth From Texas. He has publicly stated that his aim is to prove that the South can produce quality lyricists. He is also a hook writer and usually sings and harmonizes with himself (using double-tracked vocals) on his own hooks. Chamillionaire is an original member of The Color Changin' Click, which houses rappers such as his brother Rasaq, 50/50 Twin, Lew Hawk, Yung Ro, and Paul Wall.

Biography

After his parents, a Muslim father from Oyo State, Nigeria and a Christian mother from the United States, separated in his early teenage years, Chamillionaire settled into a notoriously dangerous inner-city neighborhood in North Houston called Acres Homes, which he elaborated upon during an interview with Houston's 104.9 KPTY on October 3. Rap and other forms of secular music, which his parents had highly opposed in their household, became very appealing to the young Hakeem Seriki. Inspired by local rap acts such as The Geto Boys, 8 Ball & MJG, and UGK, as well as other national acts such as N.W.A. and Public Enemy, Chamillionaire began to compose his own ponies.

At a young age, Chamillionaire along with fellow rap music artist and childhood friend Paul Wall, had decided to make music their careers. One day while promoting themselves at a Texas event, Paul Wall and Chamillionaire ran into Michael 5000 Watts, a popular mixtape DJ from the Northside. After proposing to do promotions for Watts' company, the Swishahouse, Chamillionaire and Paul Wall came to Watts' studio and convinced Watts to allow them freestyle on an intro to Watts' radio show on Houston’s 97.9 The Box. Watts, who himself was convinced to rap on the record, enjoyed the freestyle so much that he put the verses on one of his mixtapes. The freestyle became so popular in the streets that Chamillionaire and Paul Wall became regular staples on Houston's mixtape circuit, appeared on several of Watts' mixtapes, and became permanent members of Swishahouse.

Although Paul Wall and Chamillionaire were making much noise in the streets by rapping on Watts' mixtapes, they, along with several other members of the Swishahouse, became frustrated with the lack of money they were receiving from the mixtapes. After fellow member Slim Thug left the label, Chamillionaire and Paul Wall followed and started their own mixtape group known as The Color Changin' Click. Each successive mixtape released by The Color Changin' Click led to more business opportunities; the most notable of which being a contract to do a full album for Paid in Full Records. A one album contract was then negotiated between the Color Changin' Click and Paid in Full's label head, DJ Madd Hatta from 97.9 The Box, and the CCC's first album, Get Ya Mind Correct, would go on to sell over 100,000 copies.

The sale of all these albums without the backing of a major deal caught the attention of several major labels wanting to sign Chamillionaire and Paul. Chamillionaire and his labelmates decided to remain independent, however, until the right deal came along. While working on his second album with the Color Changin' Click, Chamillionaire began to have creative differences with Paul Wall, so much so that it was decided that the two emcees should each release solo albums that would be packaged together. When Chamillionaire became dissatisfied with how things were being resolved, he left Paid in Full and his almost complete album after fulfilling his contractual obligations to focus on promoting his mixtape label Chamillitary instead. As a kid, Chamillionaire was a big fan of MANKind, also known as Big June.

Israel Idonije[ He is either igbo or Yoruba: Not sure]

Israel Idonije (born November 17, 1980) is a Nigerian-Canadian defensive tackle for the National Football League's Chicago Bears. He was signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Manitoba. A draft pick of the now defunct Ottawa Renegades of the Canadian Football League, for whom he never played, Idonije spent the start 2003 season on the Cleveland Browns' practice squad prior to his release in September. He was subsequently signed to the Bears' practice squad for the final six weeks of the season[1].

Idonije was born in Lagos, Nigeria and immigrated with his family to Brandon, Manitoba.[2][3] He attended Vincent Massey High School in Brandon and, though he had never played and was reluctant, coach Kevin Grindey convinced him to play when the school restarted its Canadian football program in 1997, when Idonije was in the twelfth grade.[4] He went on to play CIS football for the Manitoba Bisons, played in the East-West Shrine Game, and was drafted 17th overall by the Ottawa Renegades in the 2003 CFL Draft. At Manitoba from 2000-02, Idonije recorded 16 sacks which stands fourth all-time in Bison history. He helped lead the Bison to the 2001 Vanier Cup where Manitoba was defeated by the Saint Mary's Huskies. His goal, however, was to play for the National Football League.[5]

A nice thread and posting, but the wrong title.

Michelle and the likes (Igbos) are not suppose to be part of the celebration of Egbe omo Yoruba.

it is better to rename the topic as (Celebrating our heroes)
