Two Nigerian writers have won at the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year Awards, which took place in South Africa on Saturday, 18th of July, 2009.

The 14th edition of the awards took place at the International Convention Centre in Durban.

Nigerian writer and blogger Tolu Ogunlesi won in the Arts and Culture category for his feature piece on art and public buses titled "What the truck?" The story appeared in the first issue of Virgin Nigeria's in-flight Glide Magazine. Ogunlesi is the magazine's contributing editor.

Funmilayo Kuti

born Francis Abigail Olufunmilayo Thomas to Daniel Olumeyuwa Thomas and Lucretia Phyllis Omoyeni Adeosolu. She was a teacher, political campaigner, and women's rights activist. Ransome-Kuti's political activism led to her being described as the doyen of female rights in Nigeria and was regarded as “The Mother of Africa.” Early on she was a very powerful force advocating for women's right to vote. She was described in 1947, by the West African Pilot as the “Lioness of Lisabi” for her leadership of Egba women on a campaign against arbitrary taxation of women. That struggle led to the abdication of the Egba King Oba Ademola II in 1949.
