The view from up


The caterpillar crawls on the ground with the other animals that can't fly

It looks up to the sky, unaware that one day it might fly like the butterfly

it looks up only because it is amazed by the beauty of the sky and it admires it

The animals it crawls with know that its destiny is up there with the butterfly, the animal of greater wit

But they only whisper it amongst themselves so the caterpillar might not try to fly before it is ready

Days after days, months after months, on a faithful day the wings of the caterpillar were strong and steady

Now it is ready, now it is ready, the animals on the ground sang

Now it is ready, now it is ready, the animals in the skies sang

Now it is ready, now it is ready, the animals in the sea sang

Hence the caterpillar evolves into a butterfly, willing and ready to fly into the sky

And when it did, it sees the true beauty of the world in the sky, the beauty of its wings and the wings of others

Do not look back down to the ground from which you came from, that was the other butterflies only order

Days after days, months after months. One faithful day the butterfly looked down to the ground and as its eyes falls

It noticed that all the animals on the ground looked up to it and the other butterflies but that was not all

It saw that the animals on the ground drank from the sea where the droppings of the animals in the sky would fall

It saw that the fruits on the ground were leftovers from the animals in the sky because they were closer to the flowers that bore them

But that wasn't still all

It saw that the lake of water that the butterflies drank from was filled with the tears of the animals on the ground

It saw that the tree that bore the fruits that the butterflies ate was fertilized by the death of the animals on the ground

It saw the water below stale and the land below destroy but still the animals on the ground looked up to it and sang

Hurray the caterpillar flies! Hurray the caterpillar flies!

Hurray the caterpillar flies! Hurray the caterpillar flies! They sang until their voices were tired

The butterfly looks down to the ground with pity and guilt until it is joined by another

Why do you look down? Why do you look down? The other butterfly asks

The ground below is dirt, it says, the animals there wear masks

We drink from them, yes, we eat from them, yes. But what we do cannot be payed back in years

We show them the beauty of our wings so they are blind to the ugliness of their land

We show them our ability to fly so they forget their inability to walk

We make them fantasize about our good life, so much that they forget that they have none

Oh yes they wear masks, it blinds them from reality

It blinds them from their inabilities

It blinds them from possibilities

Although their flaws are visible to our eyes, we ignore them and the give them the view they require

For once they know to change , our wings will tire from hunger and thirst

Our beauty would fade from their lack of their attention. The songs would stop and our names would be forgotten

And they would become us and we will become them

The fruits in the trees would no longer grow on their leaves but in their stem

The animals below would then know to drink from the cleaner water underground that we can't get to

The animals would then sing Forsake the caterpillar and the butterfly for they have forsaken us all these years

Never look to the ground again, for you cannot lesser their suffering without starting ours

But fly butterfly fly, give them a peace of mind for you have seen the ground below and now you can never have peace.
