Indications emerged on monday that the presidency is set to sideline the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria,Justice Walter Samuel.Onnoghen and is set to aploint a northerner in his stead,

reliable sources told cablenews that the presidency is not confident in the acting CJN's willingness to key into its anti corruption agenda,hence the delay in his confirmation.The source gathered that the president is planning to appoint Mr Kabir Usnan SAN,a former attorney general in a northern state as the chief Justice of Nigeria.Mr Usman is said to be a close and trusted ally of the president Buhari. when asked about the constitutional provision forpppp appoi ting a Chief Justice of the Federation,An Abuja based lawyer,Mr Johnpaul Agu SAN said the Appointment of the most senior judge of the supreme court as CJN is just a tradition,and never a rule in the constitution.
"The president and the NJC is not under any obligation to appoint the most senior judge of the supreme court as cjn,its just a tradition rather than rule.we could recall that in 1966, teslim Elias was not even a Judge of the supreme court when he was aplointed the Cjn."he said.
