- The Nigeria Navy has discovered 40 illegal refineries in the creeks of Warri south local government area of Delta state

- The refineries were discovered following a major operation raid where over one million tons of stolen crude was being refined

- The Navy warned crude oil thieves to stop the act and also called for a concerted effort to from authorities to stop the trend

The Nigeria Navy on Thursday raided over forty illegal crude oil refineries at the Jones Creek in Warri south local government area of Delta state.

The Navy said the more than forty illegal refineries contain over one million metric tons of stolen crude being illegally refined at the creeks by crude oil thieves.

The Nigerian Navy commander, in Delta, Commodore Ibrahim Dewu, told journalists that the discovery was a consequence of a raid on major illegal refineries in the creeks on Thursday.

Illegal refineries in the Niger Delta

Dewu said: “What we saw today is really far beyond comprehension because for just one camp we have discovered over 40 illegal refineries.

“The quantity of the product in the tanks and the one flowing on the ground is really much; we discovered over 200 tanks, carrying over 10,000 liters each, which were boiling, meaning the refineries were fully operating by the time we got there.”

Daily Post reports that three suspects were arrested during the raid of the illegal refineries.

Following the quantity of crude discovered, Dewu called for a quick stop to the operation of illegal refineries, noting that the operation of illegal refineries is dangerous to human lives and the environment.

He said the Nigerian Navy Ship was engaging oil thieves and operators of illegal refineries so as to end their illicit activities and ensure that the lives and environment of the people in the Niger Delta communities were safe.

He warned operators of illegal refineries to stop the trade, noting that they have a mandate and they must execute it to the letter.

“I’m sending a message to the communities that we are equal to our task. The CNS has given us a mandate, which we must keep; we are going to continue to sustain these operations so that we’ll be able to stop all these illegal activities within the creeks.

“This will make the people in the communities live a normal life because as it is now, there’s no aquatic life because the environment is polluted by these illegal activities,” he said.

nigeria is confusing

Partly because it's filled with people like you.

In what world are these dangerous, highly environmentally unfriendly illegal refineries an alternative to a standard refinery?

Destroy them all.

these JTF just go and harass small boys that did not settle them, what about the sponsors of these illegal refineries, those billionaires, politicians and army generals...illegal refining will never stop, when major business and banks get diesel to run their operation from these illegal refinery.Let JTF be deceiving themselves and polluting the land claiming destroying illegal refinery.

for all those clamouring that govt should support them by licensing them the question is how are they getting the crude oil? definitely by stealing from pipelines. as such they can't afford to buy crude and process it. because by then they will be bankrupt.
the process of drilling oil is super expensive as such none of those militants can afford it. so people should do the right thing.

Thise crooks in the state house of assembly are the actual owners of these "refineries", and that explains why they are kicking against their destruction.

Re: Navy Destroys 40 Illegal Refineries, Arrests Operators In Delta by breakeven: 8:49am On Feb 10, 2017
Why is Nigeria govt so dumb? What is illegal about those refinery. All I thought they should do is to confirm whether what they are refining is not poison. If they discover that it is fit for use then legalise it and instruct them to get registered and sell crude oil to them legally. For me it is only when they refuse to do this that you should clamp down on them. Period.

It would be smart to seize these refineries and then upgrade the better ones but close or detach the crude made ones. Thorough intelligence and Nigeria don't seem to mix. I wonder why I always thought Nigeria was a smart country. Our mumuism no be here.

if the country claim they cant maintain a legal refinery, y shouldn't we encourage the so called illegal ones by legalizing them and regulate them

they should find an environmentally friendly way to confsticate these things and not burn them up open air they the enforcement officers (navy/jtf/others) are the main polluters, imagine setting fire to 10,000 litres of diesel/crude. x 40 units. This was never done by the illegal refiners but the enforcement agencies.

the level of corruption within the JTF and the nigerian army / military is unimaginable , indescribable and unfortunate,... only those who venture into this creeks and are actually a part of the Bunkeering and socalled illegal refining would tell you that the major partakers and excorts in this oil bunkeery business are the military, army, navy and even high military commands, those who have been posted to such areas,..stories even have it that these military boys most times lobby to be sent to such areas.. some even parade with most of this bunkeery boys asking "where things they happen" so they could kick on their being posted there....some top military commandants posted to those areas have phone numbers of this bunkeerers and even call them..so they can get recognized by them and always received their own share of the loot...the black sooth ppl are witnessing in the south south today, the idea of where it is coming from might not be far fetched..it is funny where corruption has sank into....the army has been known for heinous corruptions ryt from time (case of abacha, and the lots come to mind), even though they are good ones and their role of defending the nation and bringing about sanity in the nigerian state can not be over-emphasised. but they are thieves among them.. and with their collaboration with criminals in the country makes it clearer that they are no honours among thieves....i still respect those thru to the course.... but most of the most corrupt in the army and jtf are found in the top military cadre, quote me.
