I am just tired of some Nigerians. Just because he completed the bridge (one of the duties of a government is to create infrastructures), some Nigerians are willing to forgive his past deeds. No wonder they are not ready to make sacrifices and are calling for their corruption to be brought back.

The 3rd mainlanland bridge was actually constructed and opened to the public motorists by President Shehu Shagari in 1980 , it was conceived by Gen. Yakubu Gowan and started by Muritala Muhammed. IBB finished off a small to the annex the bridge.

President Shagari opens the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos

The third major road bridge from the Nigerian mainland to the Island of Lagos was opened by President Alhaji Shehu Shagari (on Tuesday 30 September), as part of the country's independence celebrations. It's designed to relieve the growing pressure on the two existing bridges which span the Lagos Lagoon.

SYNOPSIS: Since 1975 the growing number of vehicles driving in and out of Lagos have put the existing road system under considerable strain. So the completion of the Third Mainland Bridge is a welcome addition to tackle the problem. The first vehicles to travel along the bridge formed the official opening motorcade. It's the third in successive Government's efforts to link Lagos with the mainland.

Present Shehu Shagari was introduced to the officials who've co-ordinated construction since the bridge was merely a drawing on an architect's board. Then he was called on to officially declare the bridge open. He'd earlier paid glowing tributes to the contractors.

In contrast to the few vehicles in the official motorcade, the two original bridges were full, as usual, with heavy traffic. The problem's been evident since the early 1970s, and the first plans for the Third Mainland Bridge were discussed in 1975. Its design in comparable with the best in the world, according to Nigeria's Director of Federal Highways. It consists of two separate carriageways, each providing three traffic lanes and an emergency shoulder.

It's cost nearly one hundred and twenty two million pounds (Sterling).

Firstly, in general, Nigeria has had more money and wealth under democratic leaders than military; that fact is not disputable.

Secondly, considering the inflation factor, $12 billion in 1990 may have been of more value than what it is today, but the difference isn't so much as you paint it; we are talking of the dollar here, not the Naira. Have you considered that the exchange rate of the dollar to the Naira in 1990 was less than N10 to $1?

Finally, you have just validated what I said earlier, despite the massive fortunes stolen by military leaders, despite the fact that Nigeria in general had less money under the military rulers, we were still able to achieve some largely ambitious projects like the 3rd mainland bridge amongst many road and bridge projects. But under the democrats, can we really point out to any major project completed since 1999?... We cant even maintain the structures put up by the rogue military men today.

You quickly forget the expenses of running democratic structures, frequency appropriation bills, a bicameral legislature, State houses of Assembly, the power of legislature to hold the executive to ransom as they frequently did Obasanjo who had to settle each time with Ghana must go. The military could do things by decrees and fiat. Making things quicker and cheaper.

If a ticket to London was around N4,000 Naira then and now costs around £650 in low season that is around N 400,000 by current forex rate. Are you saying that a 100 fold increase in price is not significant? shocked

You also do not consider other things: Julius Berger and others doing those bridges pay many expatriates in dollars. That would the reflected today in the cost, considering the pitiable value of the Naira.

The other aspects is that Lagos was still Federal capital then. Had Orka coup happened around 1987, IBB would have run away much quicker to Abuja and no 3MB would have being built. Whether Abuja was fully ready or not. Vatsa"s alleged coup was a phantom one. Hence he remained in Dodan Barracks. Even the idea or plan for 3MB did not begin with IBB.

irrespective of exchange rate, it is the relative strength (purchasing power) of Naira then that mattered. Yes I bought dollars anything from N8.50 to N11.00 then. Yet IBB was the worst thing that happened to the Naira. Until this Buhari regime now.

Summary of all this is that since 1999 till date, the FG hasnt really been able to complete any ambitious project as the 3MB and that is definitely is a shame. Just the simple less than 2km 2nd Niger Bridge has been the subject of silly politics for almost 2 decades. This is just food for thought.

Isn't the construction of a bridge that connect the island and mainland an outstanding performance?

Bro i wont say much but when you visit Dubai and see constructions, you will realize what an outstanding performance is. This is a necessity. After all are we suppose to swim to get to the mainland?
