YelloweWest:@ the emboldened! That is the dumbest strain at logic I have read so far all year . You bear English name out of colonisation and subjugation while still bearing your local names and surname. Were you colonised or educated by Igbos? What's your own native names before you began bearing Igbo names? Did your father and his father not bear Igbo names as well? 21 Likes 1 Share |

MultiCEO1:you see, you are a regular unintelligent Nigerian that lack debating skills. You just contradicted yourself. You said I have an English name because I may have had relationship with the British. But does it make me a Briton. Simple, those names are there because the rivers people had a relationship with the ibos. You find more ibos in Rivers State than other ethnic group because of th location. Does this "relationship" make rivers Igbo?? there are loads of individuals with British first name and surnames in Rivers because of the relationship they had with oil explorators... does it make them British. Are you sure you aren't having a mental disorder?? 14 Likes 1 Share |

@OP Considering ijaws are known land grippers and have been claiming territories in delta, Cross river, Akwa ibom, Rivers state that aren't theits. Considering the ijaws stay fighting different ethnic groups over land and most times the, land belongs to the opposing tribe. Considering we learned how the thieves tried to steal two igbo territories and even now opobo is a mystery considering an neutral person aka an Ogoni politician labeled them as igbo likewise an opobo politician labeled himself as igbo. Now a days any area the ijaws claim as ijaw. I don't believe it until I get a confirmation from a person from that territory (someone that isn't anonymous on NL but direct statement from either theor politician, FB post from their page, etc) before I believe Anything the ijaw claim as their own. Their behavior both online and offline have proven repeatedly they are land theives. 7 Likes |

Igbo is a nation. Ikwerre, Ika, Nkwerre, wawa, Ngwa, etche, Igbere, etc are all tribes in the igbo nation. I am an Igbere man from Abia state. you are Ikwerre from rivers. If you are not Igbo. I am not Igbo. If you claim Ikwerre, then I claim Igbere. Igbo has over 200 dialects with Abia state alone having more than 30. A dialect becomes a language if it loses mutual intelligibility with the mother tongue. Ikwerre has not lost that. Igbere has not lost that. That mutual intelligibility in the Igbo language which ensures that an ikwerre man or Igbere man from the interior can fairly understand the 'central Igbo' or the igbo language of a real cosmopolitan city without aid or requiring interpretation even if he can only speak his dialect is what makes and leaves us all Igbo. You can hardly understand my dialect if you ate not from my place. Same with an ikwerre man. But the moment I step down to the central Igbo language, the confusion will be settled. This can't be if an ikwerre, Ibere, igbere, waka or nteje man goes to the north or south. Meanwhile, Ijaw is Ijaw. Ijaw is not an ethnic group in the Igbo nation, same with many other tribes in old eastern region. Ikwerre, Nkwerre, Igbere, Ibere are all tribes in the Igbo nation. 22 Likes 5 Shares |

nuelsylves:Names and language alone don't define an ethnic group. Do they dress like Igbos, do they have special dishes that's similar to Igbo. What are the norms and values of these people, are they similar to that of Igbos. These are stuffs you should ask yourself. There is a community that speak yoruba and bear yoruba names in Brazil. Will it be fair to call them yorubas?? 4 Likes |

mordsith: Oil Companies have their Headquarters in Yorubaland, instead of in Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa or Abia states. The Chief Execs and higher cadre employees of the oil companies are mostly Yorubas. So Yoruba destabilizes any form of unity between Igbo and non Igbo groups in the southsouth, in a bid to make the Igbo and non-Igbo of the southsouth to never cooperate for Biafra, so that the status quo must continue. 4 Likes |

My topic rises in ones mind two preliminary questions which must be touched upon here rather than answered in full. The first is “who are the Igbo?’ and the second “who are their neighbours?” On the surface these are straightforward questions that should evoke simple answers. But in fact they are not easy to answer as will become clear presently. The term Igbo has shown itself to be rather chameleonic, changing its meaning according to time and political climate. And unless we can be certain who the Igbo are, we cannot say who their neighbours are. During the century that came after 1850 or so, some European publicists, especially some missionaries and anthropologists, had no difficulty in delimiting who the Igbo were. To these men most of the people east of the Edo and south of Igala, Idọma and Tivi were Igbo either in ethnic stock or in language or in their social structure and institutions or in all three. To Dr. W. B. Baikie writing in 1854, “all the coast dialects from Oru to Old Calabar are either directly or indirectly connected with Igbo”. He further asserted that the Igbo are “separated from the sea by petty tribes all of which trace their origin to this great race”. Major A. G. Leonard, writing in 1906, recorded that it was the view of missionaries and travelers in these parts that “the languages spoken by the Ibibio, Efik, Andoni and others have all been derived from Ibo at some ancient period; also that there is a distinct dialectal affinity between the Ijọ dialects of Brass, Ibani and New Calabar and the Isuama dialects of Ibo”. These conclusions were based on contemporary analysis of linguistic relationships and on oral traditions collected from certain Ijọ and Efik-Ibibio communities. If we dismiss the linguistic studies of the period as unreliable, we must concede that these men did not fabricate the claims to Igbo origin which they encountered among the Ijọ and the Efik-Ibibio. In other words at that time, and indeed until three or four decades ago, there were many Ijọ and Efik-Ibibio communities which proudly laid claim to Igbo origin but today would treat such a suggestion as an affront. Here we find a classic example of the trick which time and political consciousness play on historical writing. 6 Likes 2 Shares |
