I will like to 1st condemn the beating or disgracing of an innocent responsible citizen yet I would like us to look at the case in another angle. If you listen to the soldier's side story, you may not totally blame them. Think of their Counterterrorist training, risks they take being on highway, harsh weather condition and all. What the lecturer should have done was to submit the phone and beg seriously then sincerely apologize if the phone is released. I witnessed one scene on abuja keffi road; a woman was receiving a call too, when the solider asked her to come down and submit the phone, she knelt down and started begging that she didn't know the rule. everyone there with the soldiers just laughed and they just asked the woman to joined us in the bus with her phone. Being humble at times can save one from danger even from an arm robber let alone a sane soldier.
During my service year, i was traveling from Abk to Abia, on getting to Abia state, (checkpoint) my phone rang n i picked it, d soldier ordered me to come down, he said I am trying to inform the bad people on how to attack them, i just went on my kneels n started begging him, he saw my nysc trousers n he freed me... Since then, i knw it is against their rule to make call at checkpoint or ride a bike through a checkpoint, you must push your okada pass their checkpoint.

@OP this photo is not really now, don't just come here n form lies for us.

Let assume it is real, as far as am concerned i blame the lecturer.
1. Everybody knows that at checkpoint you don't press phone talkless of making calls.
Soldiers don't see phone at checkpoint they will think you want to detonate bomb. The reason for that is that phone can be use as a bomb detonator,

Even if he does not know, why arguing?

Again I ask, what law outlaws taking phone calls at a check point , in a region that is not under martial law or under state of emergency for that matter?

Besides, assuming that one's intent is to detonate an imaginary bomb, what stops me from leaving the phone in my pocket, and stealthily placing my finger on the right button, to stealthily detonate the bomb? So if someone is a terrorist, you think he will dramatically answer a phone call in front of a soldier to detonate a bomb? Again besides, so if someone wants to detonate a bomb (which means he will likely die too, which makes him a CARE FREE suicide bomber) , what makes you think he will answer a stupid soldier's orders to come down and surrender the phone and do frog jump or whatever? Why are you Nigerians so incurably backwards AND DAFT?

As shared by a Facebook user, Victor …

Maybe you are wondering if he is a bokoharam terrorist undergoing punishment. No my brother he is not. This is an innocent Father and husband who did nothing wrong but to answer just a phone call at army checkpoint. The lecturer as I later found out simply ask the soldiers who ask him to submit his handset and go just because he was seen answering call inside the vehicle to show him where its warned that no one should answer call here. He was tortured, strip and our vehicle was ordered to go leaving the victim behind….

My take…. Am not a security expert, maybe that is why i don’t know why there are army checkpoints at almost every kilometer in the south east area of this country? What is happening? Why are people of south east being subjected to military brutality of all sort. What is wrong In answering calls inside a moving vehicle. Have u been to Abia state recently to see how soldiers has suddenly turn to relationships Messiahs. Any little misunderstanding between two lovers, soldiers will storm in and beat the hell out of the guy. Of course we know how bags of rice of Igbos returning for Xmas were seized last year December and justice were not in sight.

Me and other concerned compatriots had in so many media platforms decried the unnecessary extortion of motorist from these same soldiers on checkpoints in south east. If there is anywhere that multiple checkpoint is needed in Nigeria it should be at the North where there is serious security challenges.

This is not true. The picture is that of a Boko Haram suspect being tortured. Nigerians can carry fake news as though they were there when it happened.

Is there anything to love about Nigeria ?
Perhaps you live under a rock or have never been outside the shores of this country so you do not recognize that the country is a shi.thole, an embarrassment to Africa, a disgrace to civilization, an affront to human dignity.

No light
No educational system
No healthcare
No security
Deadbeat economy
Poor housing
No roads
Police brutality
Army brutality
Political corruption
Sick President
We cannot even conduct JAMB registration

What should I love about Nigeria ?
When sane people complain you tag them IPOB youth. I am not Ibo but I see a lot of sense in the IPOB agitation

Perhaps to you Nigeria is fine But I say: BURN THIS HOUSE DOWN! and start again
NIGERIA IS NOT EXISTENT.. IT FOR A GROUP

counterinsurgency training involves beating civilians ? Nigerians especially in the south are too docile. Try to practice this kind of "counterinsurgency training" in the middle east or USA or any country with a well armed citizenry.

Happened to me in 2015. i received a call at a check point at Ekiti only for the soldier to command that the driver should drop me off the car.mehn i was so scared, everyone in the car started begging on my behalf but all pleas fell on deaf ear. I came out of the car and was joking with him instead of begging. he was taken aback and told me to go but never try that again.
other passengers were like "you are so lucky o cos so many people have been punished for the same reason"
Ekiti, that is where i see it happening, but come to think of it u must a sexy girl for them to release.

@mykelly
First of all there is no law banning the use of cell phones along highways or near military installations.
Second common sense will tell you that terrorists do not plan their attacks through phone calls right in front of soldiers. What could he have been doing ? calling down an airstrike ? When the call was examined and found to be innocuous why beat him up ?
Is that part of the Rules of Engagement ?

Did anyone beg or force them to join the military ?
if you don't know phone calls are not allowed near military checkpoints then you shouldn't be talking about common sense. There are questions I would have loved to ask you but it is very clear that your level of reasoning/IQ is on the negative side, yeah nobody forced them to join the military for your information it is called service to humanity not for bigots and coward like you

As long as Nigerians continue cracking jokes like "if army slap you, if mopol slap you", these kind of rubbish will continue you.
You need to be with some of these men when they hear such jokes, it empowers them. It makes them feel like they are feared and they can do anything and nothing will happen.
Nigerians, continue to embolden them with your silly jokes and comments.

Lol not justifying anything though. But why the man sef want de form mr I-know-my-rights for soljo.. Soljo for that matter undecided humble urself and end the story. Yet he was asking the soljos to show him where they put a warning not to receive a call at the checkpoint. Infact na him know..
If nobody ever talks about these things or defends his rights then surely we have no hope. As far as we keep protesting these sort of behaviour then there is a glimmer of light, but if we let them axt as they like then it will continue and that small glimmer of hope will be gone.
I know defending or reading out your rights is dangerous in naija but there is nothing u can do
Imagine a country where police can just storm into someones house on the order of another person, no warrant sef, and they'll just bundle and kick u into the truck without reading your miranda rights. In advanced countries, the very fact that an officer did not read those rights out during the arrest could make a criminal walk free.
And how does this connect to the topic of barbaric armed forces, most of them dont know what human righys are, they just get in by getting their uncle to talk to his friend who's sister's brother's daughter's son is influential.
Especially those ones from the north wjo know nothing apart from shoot or fire.
I think we should revamp our police academies to recruit the best and also make it possible that backdoor applications cannot be made
