Austria’s Energy Company Switch First To Take Bitcoin Payments

https://cointelegraph.com/news/austrias-energy-company-switch-first-to-take-bitcoin-payments

Austrian and German energy provider Switch has begun accepting Bitcoin for gas and electricity bill payments.

In a press release and Facebook post Wednesday, Switch, which is wholly owned by EnergieAllianz Austria, said the move marked a first for Austrian energy customers.

The developments put Austria considerably ahead of its neighbor Germany, which has been unusually slow to embrace crypto-based innovation at regulatory level.

Across the border in Switzerland, however, progress is considerably more advanced, with a Bitcoin certificate currently the most traded product on its main exchange SIX.

First Private Bank in Switzerland Begins Offering Customers Bitcoins Directly

https://cointelegraph.com/news/first-private-bank-in-switzerland-begins-offering-customers-bitcoins-directly

In a major event for Swiss banking and Bitcoin generally, Falcon Private Bank became the first Swiss bank to begin offering customers direct access to their Bitcoin and altcoin portfolios. Through a partnership with Bitcoin Suisse AG, the bank is able to provide the necessary infrastructure to allow clients access to their coin holdings.

The company representative said,

“This new product offering will enable Falcon Private Bank clients to hold, buy and sell Bitcoin directly through their e-banking platform or account manager.”

The move should come as no surprise to those following the Bitcoin and altcoin markets, as investors are ready and willing to start moving into cryptocurrencies in recent months.

The run-up in Bitcoin price has led to widespread commentary on banking and Blockchain, as well as bank interest in cryptocurrencies.

While the recent decline in pricing for cryptocurrencies generally has led many to believe that the market has reached a peak, most see another rise of pricing in the future. If so, Falcon Private Bank is set to help customers capitalize and may well lead other banks into the cryptocurrency market.

Major Swiss Online Bank Unleashes Bitcoin In Week’s Second Swiss Breakthrough.

https://cointelegraph.com/news/major-swiss-online-bank-unleashes-bitcoin-in-weeks-second-swiss-breakthrough

A further major Swiss financial institution has begun accepting Bitcoin this week as Swissquote follows Falcon Private Bank.

In a press release issued today, Swissquote describes itself as the “first online bank in Europe to offer Bitcoin investing.”

The decision opens up Bitcoin investment to the platform’s 302,000 customers with a combined capital of 17.8 bln francs ($17.6 bln).

“Many investors are interested in cryptocurrencies, but are afraid to trade them, because the players in this market are mostly little-known and they often require the transfer of funds to a foreign account,” CEO Mark Buerki commented in the release.

“As a Swiss bank, we offer our clients a simplified, transparent process, without foreign transfers, that is within reach of everybody.”

The news comes just days after Swiss private bank Falcon announced it had partnered with Bitcoin Suisse to allow its customers to “to hold, buy and sell Bitcoin directly through their e-banking platform or account manager.”

Prior to that, it emerged that a Bitcoin certificate was on “most days” the most popular financial product available on Switzerland’s main stock exchange, SIX.

Meanwhile, for its project Swissquote will use Bitstamp, the exchange currently headquartered in Luxembourg, to handle payments and provide pricing information on Bitcoin.

“The Bitstamp-Swissquote partnership marks a milestone in the already promising development of Bitcoin, which is being implemented gradually into the traditional financial system,” the release adds.

Switzerland is already considerably ahead of its neighbors Austria and Germany in the race to propagate emerging Blockchain and cryptocurrency technology.

John McAfee Claims Bitcoin Will be Worth $500,000 in Three Years

https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/john-mcafee-claims-bitcoin-will-worth-500000-three-years/

John McAfee has made a bold state regarding bitcoin, claiming that each unit will be worth $500,000 in three years time

As a cybersecurity and software pioneer, McAfee is a name known inside and outside of the digital currency space. Last year the former programmer for NASA stated that he got involved with the digital currency because it will eventually become ‘the standard for the world.’

Now, though, in what may have been a marketing tactic designed to grab the community’s attention, McAfee took to social media to predict what he thinks bitcoin’s worth will be in three years time.

Hello Rajoswki

About Plexicon ICO.

Early investors in the operation are usually motivated to buy the cryptocoins in the hope that the plan becomes successful after it launches which could translate to a higher cryptocoin value than what they purchased it for before the project was initiated. An example of a successful ICO project that was profitable to early investors is the smart contractsplatform called Ethereum which has Ethers as its coin tokens. In 2014, the Ethereum project was announced and its ICO raised $18 million in Bitcoins or $0.40 per Ether. The project went live in 2015 and in 2016 had an ether value that went up as high as $14 with a market capitalization of over $1 billion.

At the end of the day, there will be some ICOs that should be absolutely avoided. A conservative strategy is 99% of all ICO could be junk. Do your due diligence and learn how to sniff out the 1%.

For any startup to achieve a successful ICO, certain fundamental factors must be considered:

1. the presence of a real problem in the industry for which the a given startup proffers a tangible solution

2. understanding of a clear business model and a model of working with the real market.

3. reputation of the team members of a given project is important when assessing the genuineness of a project

4. investigating the competitive advantage and acquiring a proper understanding of the escrow terms are also vital areas when analyzing a given ICO.

Investors who have bought coins at the ICO price have been rewarded generously by the companies in question In the next year there will be more and more ICO offerings coming out every month as this technology becomes more mainstream. They key is following the right steps and an extensive research.

So next time someone refers you to a new ICO or even when you want to spread your investment on other altcoins always strive to follow these tips, they can make you very good money and also save you from losing a lot as well. As you can easily detect scam ICO which right now are everywhere in the internet.

Rothschild Inv. Corp Invests in BTC Per SEC

https://cointelegraph.com/news/rothschild-inv-corp-invests-in-btc-per-sec#

In a move that shouldn’t stun most BTC and cryptocurrency followers, Rothschild has purchased Bitcoin via the GBTC (Bitcoin Investment Trust) investment vehicle.

SEC articles signed on Friday indicate that Rothschild has diversified into cryptocurrencies, now owning $210,000 worth of GBTC.

The move should not come as a surprise given the widespread and increasing support of Bitcoin among institutional investors and hedge funds.

The market had reacted with strong negativity after the fears of a potential breakdown in support of the BIP 91 and SegWit by miners. However, the market has since responded rapidly, increasing the prices of Bitcoin to close the week nearly 40 percent up from the lows of last weekend.

The price of Bitcoin is a point of contention, with some saying that the bubble has come and a collapse is imminent, while others are suggesting that the price may skyrocket into the $5,000 range.

Regardless of where the price goes, the fact that investors like Rothschild are beginning to diversify into BTC and other cryptocurrencies should bolster support for valuations.

Although it hasn't happened before, and it is very undesirable, it is possible for Bitcoin to split into two non-negligible separate currencies.

Why is this possible? / What causes a split?

There is no actual BTC in your Bitcoin wallet: there are only private keys which are used to unlock and then transfer ownership of BTC stored in the Bitcoin system. BTC never actually leaves the Bitcoin system. A split creates a clone of the original cryptocurrency, but with modifications preventing the two cryptocurrencies from actually being the same; after the split, you cannot send coins from one side of the split to the other. After the split, your private key can be used to unlock your coins on both the original system and the modified system.

It's like if someone got their hands on a copy of the google.com database and created super-google.com starting with the google.com database but with different features. You could use the same login credentials to login at either google.com or super-google.com. But after the clone was created, if you received mail.google.com email, it would not show up at mail.super-google.com, and vice-versa. Similarly, you can use the same private key to spend money on the original currency or the modified currency, but after the split they diverge.

Anyone can create a split. It only requires a few lines of code changes. But splits only matter if people of economic significance actually use the split (ie. they must run the modified software).

Splits happen in the following situations:

- In a contentious hardfork.
- In a user-activated softfork (UASF) which lacks both majority mining power at the time of activation and near-unanimous support from the economy. If it has one or the other, then a split does not result.
- In a BIP9-style miner-triggered softfork where a very large number of miners are lying about their enforcement of the softfork. (Unlikely.)

What happens to my bitcoins in a split?

It's similar to a stock spin-off. You have x BTC beforehand, and afterward you have both x BTC and x "BTC-X". But very importantly, your wallet will not magically know that it is now able to unlock both currencies. If your wallet is not updated to account for the split, then you will only be able to spend one of the currencies, probably the more "status-quo" one. Another possibility is that your wallet could be updated, but only to support a different currency than it would've otherwise, not to support both. It is not unreasonable for wallets to support only one currency, since they really weren't originally designed/intended to support multiple. But if your wallet only supports one of the currencies, then you will usually end up throwing away some or all of the other currency when you next send coins after the split, as a side-effect of the transaction -- this is called "replay".

Value is unpredictable. Like a stock split or spin-off, you'd vaguely expect the value of BTC immediately before the split to equal the sum of the values of "BTC" and "BTC-X" immediately after the split. But if a split like this is anything close to a 50-50 split (in relation to economic adoption/value, not node or miner adoption), then the whole thing will probably be unbelievably, catastrophically messy, which may result in the combined value crashing. On the other hand, if the minority currency is pretty small and things don't get too messy, the minority side could be speculatively overvalued (similar to altcoins) without affecting the majority side too much, causing the combined value to rise somewhat.

Which side of the split is the real Bitcoin?

That depends on a wide variety of factors, and to some degree it is subjective. The most important factor is which currency people/businesses/exchanges accept: if for example one currency is accepted by 95% of the pre-split economy, and the other is accepted by only 5% of the pre-split economy, then the 95% one is probably truly Bitcoin, and the other one can be considered a Bitcoin-derived altcoin. Note that mining power has very little influence here.

Some might say that both currencies post-split are valid incarnations of Bitcoin, but it is my philosophy that only one Bitcoin can exist at any one time; any uncertainty is only a temporary feature, and at least in hindsight there will be a single unbroken path from Satoshi's original Bitcoin to the current one.

What should I do to secure my bitcoins?

First of all, remove all bitcoins possible from banks/exchanges/"hosted wallets". If you can't export your private keys, then you don't actually control the bitcoins. This is a good idea in general, but it's especially important in case of splits. If you're using a Bitcoin bank, then you will have no control over what happens to your coins. Quite possibly, the bank will end up stealing/losing one of the currencies that you should have access to, either through greed/malice or technical incompetence, and the currency they throw away might well be the only one that ends up having any long-term value.

Possible splits are usually predictable some time in advance (see the next section). If in doubt, avoid sending transactions or trusting received transactions 12 hours before and up to a few days after the split time, and check the forum for more news. If a major split happens, I will very likely make a post and news item explaining how to handle the situation. Coins at rest are not at risk.

Generally, after a split:

- If you want to completely ignore (ie. discard) one of the currencies, and your wallet is already set up to ignore that currency, then you don't have to do anything.
- If you want to completely ignore (ie. discard) one of the currencies, and your wallet is set up to support only that currency, then you might be able to change the software's settings after the split, or you might have to switch to different wallet software.
- If you want to use both currencies at the same time or sell one of the currencies, then you will probably have to follow a somewhat-complicated series of steps possibly involving running some extra software in order to cleanly split your coins and eliminate the possibility of replay.

What are SegWit, BIP148, UASFs, and "UAHF", and how do they relate to this? / When might a split happen?

SegWit is a set of changes to Bitcoin which increases the max block size, among other improvements. Under its initial BIP141/BIP9 deployment plan, there is almost no chance of a split.

A user-activated softfork (UASF) is a general method of deploying softforks (like SegWit). UASFs have been done in the past, both by Satoshi and after Satoshi left. Unlike the BIP9 deployment method originally planned for SegWit, a UASF does not require any miner cooperation. A UASF can fail, but only through insufficient economic adoption, not by any miner action. However, splits are more likely with UASFs than with BIP9 deployments, especially when the UASF is done on a compressed schedule. (For ideally-low split risk, a UASF would take about a year to activate.)

BIP148 is one specific UASF. It is intended to activate SegWit. It activates and may cause a split on August 1. If it succeeds economically, it will activate SegWit by November.

The large Bitcoin miner Bitmain announced that they might engage in a (nonsensically-named) "user activated hardfork" ("UAHF"wink shortly after BIP148 activates if BIP148 has any success. This would definitely cause an additional split, resulting in up to three currencies: BIP148-Bitcoin, Bitmain-coin, and (depending on the degree of BIP148's success) status-quo-Bitcoin. As mentioned previously, if you have x BTC before the split, you'll be technically able to claim x of all three of these currencies after the split.

The next time when a split is predicted to possibly happen is therefore August 1, 2017 at midnight UTC.

OK wallets

The following wallets give you some theoretical way of exporting your private keys, so they should be safe to hold BTC during Aug 1. Depending on what happens after Aug 1, you may have to export your private keys and use different software, though. (Do not go doing this willy-nilly in a panic, though -- wait for agreement and clear instructions from several sources. There will be no rush.)

The ones in bold are ones that I also tend to like for other reasons. The ones in italic seem to make it difficult to export your private keys, or I particularly dislike them for other reasons.

Bitcoin Will Hit $1 Million in 5-10 Years, Says PayPal Director

Wences Casares, CEO of bitcoin wallet Xapo and member of PayPal’s board of directors has made a compelling forecast on bitcoin’s value over the next decade.

The bitcoin entrepreneur and executive was speaking at the Consensus 2017 conference in New York. Taking the stage at a dinner organized by bitcoin and blockchain advocacy group Coin Center, Casares’ speech was quite the hit.

While we did not attend and are unable to find a video of the talk, there are a few notable takeaways from scatterings of his speech reported online. Putting bitcoin under the spotlight, Casares opined that “the internet doesn’t have a currency and it desperately needs one”, pointing to the world’s most popular cryptocurrency.

“The biggest mistake [would] be to buy more bitcoin than you can afford to lose. The biggest mistake is [also] not to own any bitcoin,” he told the gathered audience.

“Put 1% of your net worth in Bitcoin and forget about it for 10 years” Casares added, baiting new investors to adopt the cryptocurrency.

His speech also included a prediction for the cryptocurrency, where one bitcoin would hit $1 million before the next ten years.

Bitcoin Price Explodes to $3,212 New All-Time High, Factors

On Aug. 5, less than four days after the Bitcoin Cash (BCH) hard fork, Bitcoin price surged drastically within a 24-hour period, recording a new all-time high at $3,212.

Previously, Bitcoin price broke the $3,000 mark mostly due to optimism surrounding the activation of the Bitcoin Core development team’s transaction malleability fix and scaling solution Segregated Witness (SegWit).

However, shortly after that, a major market correction led Bitcoin price to fall to $1,900, and it stabilized at around $2,500 amidst uncertainty regarding SegWit and the execution of the BCH hard fork, which was initially proposed by Bitcoin mining equipment manufacturer Bitmain.

Malleability

As Cointelegraph previously reported, various SegWit experts including Blockstack co-founder Ryan Shea have described Bitcoin as a “Swiss Army Knife” of a solution, because of the wide of range of Bitcoin’s existing problems it solves.

Most notably, SegWit is expected to scale the Bitcoin Blockchain by 75 percent while eliminating transaction malleability, which has recently become a major security issue for BCH.

Bitcoin Core developer Peter Todd emphasized the necessity of SegWit on the Bitcoin network following the announcement of ViaBTC on Aug. 5.

As various experts and developers including Paxos principal architect Jimmy Song have noted earlier this week, Bitcoin price is likely rising due to the imminence of SegWit activation. Since the mining community has already agreed to activate SegWit via Bitcoin Improvement Proposal BIP 91 and 141, the original SegWit proposal, SegWit is likely to be activated on the Bitcoin network by Aug. 14.

As the abovementioned date approaches, Bitcoin is expected to continuously increase in value, establishing new all-time highs

It's Official: Segregated Witness Will Activate on Bitcoin

The long-debated scaling upgrade reached the necessary threshold to "lock in" today at block 479,707 with 100% of bitcoin mining pools signaling support for the proposal. According to network data, the block was mined by BitClub.

But the change won't officially lock-in until tomorrow, once the signaling period has ended.

Further, the change will be unusable, as CoinDesk described in more depth, for a couple more weeks.

The network will move into a roughly two-week "grace period," to give users and mining pools a chance to upgrade their software. After that, which looks to end August 21, SegWit will activate and miners will start rejecting blocks that do not support the change.

First proposed by bitcoin developer Pieter Wuille in December 2015, the expectation for SegWit is that it will open up several ways to scale bitcoin to support more users. While this doesn't seem particularly contentious, it has been the subject of tireless debate within the bitcoin community.

Other communities such as litecoin managed to activate it last spring.

But today, the SegWit loop has been closed for bitcoin.

Bitcoin on Its Way to $5000, and Should You Invest or Stay Away from Bitcoin?

The blue chip brokerage house Fidelity has allowed its customers to create their own Bitcoin accounts, further accelerating Bitcoin’s bull run. The price of the digital currency hit the $4000-mark this week following the anointment by the mainstream media of the currency as a new asset class.

Other Bitcoin projections
Other industry players and experts are predicting a brighter future for Bitcoin. According to an analyst from Standpoint Research, the price of the virtual currency can reach the $5,000-mark by 2018.

These rosy predictions about Bitcoin create the question on whether ordinary investors should invest part of their savings, or even their retirement accounts, into the cryptocurrency.

Why invest or not to invest in Bitcoin
To help the ordinary investors in deciding whether they will invest their hard-earned money into the digital currency, here are three reasons to invest or not to invest in the cryptocurrency.

Three reasons to invest in Bitcoin
It’s gaining mainstream credibility as industry players consider it as the new gold – Bitcoin has many of the same qualities of gold, whose value is not controlled by governments.

Many investors and finance industry experts are serious about the promise of Bitcoin – A large number of mainstream investors and entrepreneurs already consider Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as a legitimate asset class.

There is only a limited amount of Bitcoin – There are only 21 million Bitcoin tokens to be mined and no new tokens will appear until after 2040. This makes Bitcoin a deflationary currency whose value increases naturally with time.

Three reasons not to invest in Bitcoin
Bitcoin only exists on computers – Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are just a piece of code on the Internet and they are thus intangible. Then again, the money in your bank account also only exists as number on a computer.

Bitcoin is very volatile – In the ten years it has existed, Bitcoin has been prone to major bubbles and painful crashes.

Many Bitcoin users are shadowy figures – Despite the belief by many that Bitcoin could replace cash in the future, the digital currency is also known for purchasing drugs and paying extortion fees on the Internet.

Exercise caution
Those who are looking to hop on should remember to invest for the long term, and never to invest more than they can afford to lose. Right now, cryptocurrency continues to climb and it looks like there is no way to lose. That sort of thinking is extremely dangerous and prospective investors should exercise caution, whatever they chose.

A unit of the Tokyo-based financial information provider issued three-year debt worth 200 bitcoins to another firm in the Fisco group on Aug. 10, in what likely is the first such deal in Japan, according to Masayuki Tashiro, the company’s chief product officer. One goal of the sale was to test the bonds’ potential to become a useful fundraising tool, he said. The notes issued were worth about $813,000 as of Wednesday.

The experiment is another example of how companies and investors worldwide are looking for ways to make money out of bitcoin. Some investors have turned to digital currencies as a haven asset as tensions between the U.S. and North Korea escalate. Japan, where regulators have made more progress than other nations in crafting cryptocurrency laws, is becoming a hub for blockchain experimentation.

“We expect that bitcoin will eventually be recognized as a financial product” under local law governing financial instruments, Tashiro said. If that happens and issuance of cryptocurrency debt takes off, “if we play a role of arranger, we could earn fees,” he said.

Bitcoin Price Might Exceed $1 Million, More Millionaires in World Than Bitcoins

https://cointelegraph.com/news/bitcoin-price-might-exceed-1-million-more-millionaires-in-world-than-bitcoins

While sources differ on the number of millionaires in the world, Credit Suisse estimates the number at about 35 million. This figure accounts for all “financial and nonfinancial wealth,” including assets, collectibles, and homes.

This is a remarkable number when compared to the total number of Bitcoins that will ever exist. While there are roughly 35 million millionaires in the world, there will only ever be a maximum of 21 million Bitcoins. That’s right--there will never be enough Bitcoins in existence for every millionaire in the world to own even a single one.
Why is Bitcoin valuable?

While you let that thought sink in, let’s consider what gives Bitcoin its value. Granted that there are numerous features we could cite, including a global network, an immutable Blockchain and a means to transfer wealth from one person to another without ever involving a middleman.

These are all fine features, to be sure. But what really makes Bitcoin valuable are two properties: scarcity and authenticity.
Digital scarcity

Bitcoin has value for the same reason gold has value: people want it and there isn’t enough to go around. New gold can’t merely be created; one has to find a gold mine and go through the difficult, capital-intensive and expensive process of mining and refining the gold. Because neither governments nor factories can create more of it, gold is scarce. This scarcity imparts value.

Many unusual items have been used as currencies or stores of value in earlier societies. One of the more famous is wampum, a necklace made from a certain kind of seashell that was rare in the Americas. A currency doesn’t necessarily have to be inherently useful in order to function, but it absolutely must be scarce.

This requirement for scarcity is the reason counterfeiting has such severe penalties. In fact, in earlier times, counterfeiting was punishable by death. Counterfeiters undermined confidence in a currency by making it less scarce. Doing so, at scale, could wreck an entire economy..
