jonhemma11:

In his speech at the occasion, Gbajabiamila said the gesture was a redemption of his electoral promise to impact on the lives of the people of the area.

“We are in the 21st century when the most important thing that drives development is technology.
“Nigeria cannot afford to be left out, that is why we are doing our little by distributing these tablets to our students today,” he said.

The House Leader explained that the selection of the students was made without political affiliation, adding that the management of the benefiting schools recommended the beneficiaries based on merit.

He said the tablet contained 117 books for Junior and Senior students and covered all the subjects in the curriculum.
The lawmaker added that the tool also contained tests and assessments that could help students in their learning.

According to Gbajabiamila, other features of the computer include processing applications for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and long lasting battery life of 6,000amh.

I do not want to be unnecessarily critical but the first thought that came to me when I realised that it was tabs was CONTRACT! Unfortunately, that's the system we have. Someone most likely would've benefited from the procurement of the tabs which may outweigh the purpose of the programme.

Nigerian politicians and 'impacting the lives of people' are synonymous to vagueness.

If it is the same Surulere that the media has been quoting, electricity remains a big problem to them so even if the batteries are 60,000mah, Surulere residents need his intervention in terms of prepaid meter (I have seen several news features on this issue). He actually has the power to intervene in such - let's put the basket down before collecting apples.

Similarly, when we all focus on these tablets, my question remains "are all students comfortable with using this as a means of study?" A tab is more of a support to me - help them with the electricity challenges they have first and that will be a fantastic add-on for the use of the tabs

I hope the beneficial students make proper use of the tablet. Not like here in Osun state where the tablets given to students are used to watch porn and do other sorts immoral activities.

Don't be surprised if he has a personal stake in the private school.
Meanwhile in the same constituency, children are sitting on the floor in dilapidated public school buildings.

You know this because you were there, you interviewed the kids and they told you they attend private schools?

Even sef, are private school kids in Lagos are not Lagosians or his constituents?

Have asked yourself lately what your own village federal officials are doing with your constituency allowance?

What is an ipob without hate, anger, and bitterness over other people's progress and development?

You mean people don't use computers or cell phones in Nigeria because they don't have stable electricity?

Abi what kind of argument is this?

The fact that there is no stable electricity doesn't mean you can not do good, progress and develop. Level yourself and your thinking above adversity because it's the only way progress.

Waste of funds..
That's the problem in most developing countries, we spend on irrelevant or less relevant things and leave priorities.
Will they be able to afford data to fully utilise the tablets, probably not.

Why not sponsor their higher education, the tuition of several state and federal universities is close to the price of these tablets.
Or add a social amenity or infrastructure. I'm a strong fan of generalities rather than individual gifts.
There's most likely some lacking amenities in the school, renovate that and impact more.

My 2 cents sha.
All these distribution of tablets here, wheel barrow there, school feeding will have no long run effect.

Exposing kids to ICT and computer learning is a great thing and way forward. These tabs are preloaded with their school work and thousands of WAEC prep and past exam questions and I don't even see how you transform everything overnight so any step taken is a good step.

A good meal is very critical when it comes to learning es[cially kids from poor homes.

Wheelbarrow? We are talking about school kids here so what's that got to do with school kids?

You probably skipped the news few days ago when the Benue state governor distributed wheel barrows for empowerment.

The underlying point is this, our leaders (at the state and federal level) waste (for lack of a better word) funds on welfare schemes that are short sighted.

The school feeding programme gulpes a whole 200million for a single week, that is not feasible spending at this phase of our development, when we are still borrowing to fund our national budget. Just multiply that by 52 and you will be shocked at the total.

Most of the schools where these kids are being fed have no chairs and tables, no basis teaching amenities, yet money is wasted on feeding.
My opinion might sound harsh but its the goddamn truth.
Most of the teachers in these public schools are highly underpaid, you really think they'll seat down and watch the kids eat without taking some home for their children, this is Nigeria oh.

Nigeria has no system of documentation, half of the money expended on these so called "welfare schemes" will be hijacked. Just watch and see in few months (or the next administration) we'll see headlines like:
"Principal takes bags of rice meant for feeding kids home", or " teachers exploit feeding programme"; its inevitable in an underdeveloped environment like ours.

Our leaders are well aware of this, yet they continue schemes like this. Lets use the IDP camp as a case study, if you only know how most of the donations are being stolen, you will understand what i am saying.
All funds should be used on amenities and infrastructure, important infrastructure.
If you want to "expose kids to ICT" then open a computer center in the school, where all students (even teachers) can go at will, don't give tablets to a few to take home.

The money he used in getting them actually belongs to the people. He is only returning back what he has acquired illegally. Chikena!!!
Actually, a legislator can do this without having stolen money. The constitution allows them to access funds for what they call "Constituency projects". It is one of the quasi executive functions of the Nigerian legislature. I don't like it, but it's there in the constitution.
