Patience on the other hand na agbero. She was uncouth and unladylike. That made her popular for all the wrong reasons.

Mama peace was notorious, not popular.

If she isn't throwing grammatical bombs and bullets today, she will be busy bullying one governor or the other.

But we are talking of popular, not class.

You can be educated, polished, fine and all that but not popular or capture popular imagination.

Maryam IBB was the pioneer of that. The first visibly audible FL, even before social media came. She combined beauty & grace with all those. There was really no first lady office before her. And she began all that in a very austere military barracks (Dodan Barracks).

It's a tie between Dame Pat & Stella Obasanjo. Because even without much sophistication & affluent family background like Stella, Pat still did not come in with timidity or inferiority complex. That is quite an achievement in a male dominated society where women are expected to know their place.

Maryam babangda. OP remove those ones before Maryam Babangida. They were not first ladies. They were wives of head of states and presidents. Maryam Babangida started this first lady syndrome in Nigeria.

Abi oh... Maryam Babangida was by far the most popular in her time... for all the right reasons:

She turned the ceremonial post of First Lady into an active champion for women's issues, launched Better Life Programme for Rural Women which encouraged cottage industries, farms, cooperatives and social welfare programs.

By her example and activities, she showed first ladies in other African countries how they could improve the lives of their people.

She was a role model for many women including my mother's generation, and people still sing her praises to this day. I don't think any other first lady has had quite an impact since her, and a lot of the institutions we have today have echoes of her pioneering spirit.
