Let's first distinguish between the economic conditions of a place and the progressiveness of a place regarding women's liberation. I do not think people leave Africa for the Middle East (Dubai included) for the sole purpose of escaping female subjugation. They would go to Europe or The Americas for that. They do, however, leave Africa to escape the harsh economic climate, because (yeah) Africa is 'still hellish'. It's not comparable.

That said, when it comes to women's liberation, I am not saying that we aren't oppressed; even the West hasn't gotten to the promised land with the feminist agenda. I am saying that we can do something about without without fearing that we'll be stoned in the streets for raising our voices. We have women in the work place, we are not confined to our homes by law or religion. It is our responsibility to use our voices to better effect.

What we battle isn't our laws; we use templates from liberal countries (of course the northern states are exempt) What we fight, largely, is the prejudiced whispering from societies lot, which we are too fragile to withstand. A woman is afraid to want things that attract the 'feminist' label; she doesn't want to antagonize the men. We are going back and forth with it, harboring our internalized phobia. It's not laws that restrict us, it's our need for male approval. And who would have sympathy for that?

African women have to be unapologetic in their commitment for women's causes. They cannot be shriveling up whenever a man threatens that she would be single for the rest of her life if she doesn't drop her advocacy for feminism. We have to have thicker skins that that.

what is the benefit of living in Africa
isn't living in Africa like being a woman in the middle east

i grew up in Nigeria, the place is so horrible

many Africans comfortable in the middle east rather stay there than live in Nigeria that looks like a refuse bin
